Effects of Kaolin on Ophelimus maskelli (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) in Laboratory and Nursery Experiments
2011
Although recent research has demonstrated that clays provide satisfactory control of some agricultural insect pests, the effect of clays on gall wasps that damage forest trees has not been previously reported. The aim of the current study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the clay kaolin in the laboratory and in the field in reducing the damage caused by the eulophid Ophelimus maskelli (Ashmead) on seedlings of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus L'Hér.) species. In the laboratory, kaolin + wetting agent significantly reduced the percentage of infested leaves and the number of galls per leaf. In the nursery, gall number per leaf was not correlated with leaf area with kaolin + wetting agent but was rel…
Mode family analysis for PMMA WGM micro resonators using spot intensity changes
2021
The whispering gallery modes (WGM) micro resonators are based on elliptical objects, which can be made from optically transparent materials, The geometry of the object enables optical wave circulating inside the ellipse using total internal reflection. If there is a monochromatic light source with constant intensity to the ellipse, constructive interference may be observed. Poly methyl methacrylate acrylic (PMMA) WGM micro resonators are commercially available with typical optical quality factor of 103-104. These could limit problems with WGM micro resonator expensive manufacturing. Thanks to advances in high resolution image processing, read-outs using spectroscopy (single photo detector) …
Influence of epigallocatechin gallate and phenolic compounds from green tea on the growth of Oenococcus oeni
2007
Aims: To investigate the effect of phenolic compounds on the growth of Oenococcus oeni. Methods and Results: Oenococci are usually grown in media often supplemented with complex additives such as tomato juice. In order to improve our knowledge about the growth requirements of oenococci, we added several juices and leaf extracts such as green tea to the culture media and screened them for growth-stimulating substances to substitute complex supplements such as juices by more defined components. We found that also green tea could cause a growth stimulation of Oenococcus oeni strain B2. Conclusions: Further experiments showed that the stimulating effect was as a result of the phenolic compou…
Application of WGM Resonances to the Measurement of the Temperature Increment of Ho and Ho-Yb Doped Optical Fibers Pumped at 1125 and 975 nm
2021
Optical fiber characterization using whispering gallery mode resonances of the fiber itself has been demonstrated to be a powerful technique. In this work, we exploit the thermal sensitivity of whispering gallery mode resonances to characterize the pump-induced temperature increment in holmium doped and holmium-ytterbium codoped optical fibers. The technique relies on the measurement of the resonances’ wavelength shift due to temperature variation as a function of the pump power. Holmium doped fibers were pumped to the second excited level 5I6 of the Ho3+ ion using a laser diode at 1125 nm and ytterbium-holmium codoped fibers to the 2F5/2 level of the Yb3+ ion by a laser diode at 975 nm. Ou…
Nanoscale X-Ray Imaging of Spin Dynamics in Yttrium Iron Garnet
2019
Time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (TR-STXM) has been used for the direct imaging of spin wave dynamics in thin film yttrium iron garnet (YIG) with spatial resolution in the sub 100 nm range. Application of this x-ray transmission technique to single crystalline garnet films was achieved by extracting a lamella (13x5x0.185 $\mathrm{\mu m^3}$) of liquid phase epitaxy grown YIG thin film out of a gadolinium gallium garnet substrate. Spin waves in the sample were measured along the Damon-Eshbach and backward volume directions of propagation at gigahertz frequencies and with wavelengths in a range between 100~nm and 10~$\mathrm{\mu}$m. The results were compared to theoretical …

Noninvasive medical imaging techniques such as single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or positron emission tomography (PET), are valuable tools for the development and validation of new therapeutic molecules. That approach requires the conjugation of a radioactive source emitting either y-rays or positrons with a biological tracer (e.g. DOTATOC). Among the potentially useful radionuclides available, 111In3+ (SPECT), 64Cu2+, and 68Ga3+ (PET) have attracted increasing attention over the last years for medical applications. To minimize the in vivo release of the radioactive cation by transmetalation or transchelation with biological ligands, it is essential to trap selectively the …
Self-focusing in Terbium Gallium Garnet using Z-scan
1998
International audience; When illuminated near its resonance with an Ar ion laser beam (lambda=488 nm), laser induced thermal self-focusing is observed in Terbium Gallium Garnet. The crystal exhibits a strong intensity dependent refractive index change Dn. The Z-scan technique is used to study the beam waist change due to Dn. The refractive index is found to be well described by a quadratic spatial distribution model. Both the sign and the distribution coefficient of Dn are determined.
Résistances aux herbicides : panics dans le riz !
2014
