Encapsulation of hydrophilic and lipophilized catechin into nanoparticles through emulsion electrospraying
2017
In this work, we investigated the potential of emulsion electrospraying that contained bacterial cellulose and proteins for the encapsulation of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Specifically, two different catechins, hydrophilic (H-EGCG) or lipophilized (L-EGCG), were encapsulated either on the aqueous or the oily phase of the emulsions in order to compare the antioxidants’ stability. Emulsion properties in terms of stability, droplet size, bulk and interfacial viscosity were studied combined with the evaluation of the properties of the produced particles, namely the morphology and size of the particles, the encapsulation efficiency (EE) of catechin and the stability of the EGCG within the …
Chemical analysis and antioxidant activity of the essential oils of three Piperaceae species growing in the central region of Cuba.
2013
The present study describes the phytochemical profile and antioxidant activity of the essential oils of three Piperaceae species collected in the central region of Cuba. The essential oils of Piper aduncum, P. auritum and P. umbellatum leaves, obtained by hydrodistillation, were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The main components of P. aduncum oil were piperitone (34%), camphor (17.1%), camphene (10.9%), 1,8-cineol (8.7%) and viridiflorol (7.4%), whereas that of P. auritum and P. umbellatum was safrole (71.8 and 26.4%, respectively). The antioxidant properties of the essential oils were also evaluated using several assays for radical scavenging ability (DPPH test and redu…
Determination of synthetic antioxidants in dairy products and dietetic supplements by micellar liquid chromatography with direct sample injection
2000
A simple and rapid HPLC method for the determination of synthetic antioxidants (propyl gallate, tert-butylhydroquinone, 2,4,5-trihydroxybutyrophenone, nordihydroguaiaretic acid, octyl gallate, 3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole and dodecyl gallate) in powdered and liquid milk, cream of milk and dietetic supplements is described. The samples are diluted or solved in a micellar solution, filtered and directly injected. The retention behavior of the antioxidants on a C18 column, with micellar mobile phases containing SDS (0.05–0.15 M), n-propanol (1–9%, v/v) and 10 mM phosphate at pH 3, has been studied by using mathematical models. Retention is predicted with errors below 3%. To optimize the mobil…
Direct injection of edible oils as microemulsions in a micellar mobile phase applied to the liquid chromatographic determination of synthetic antioxi…
1999
Abstract A simple and quick procedure for analysis of hydrophobic samples by direct injection in a liquid chromatograph, without previous extraction, has been developed. The sample is solved in a water/sodium dodecyl sulphate/n-pentanol microemulsion without destroying the microemulsion structure, and injected. A micellar mobile phase containing 0.1 M SDS, 2.5% n-propanol and 10 mM phosphate of pH 3 is used. The procedure is applied to the determination of synthetic antioxidants (propyl gallate, tert-butylhydroquinone, 2,4,5-trihydroxybutyrophenone, nordihydroguaiaretic acid, octyl gallate, 3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole and dodecyl gallate) in sunflower, corn and olive oils. Linear calibrat…
Defect interaction and local structural distortions in Mg-doped LaGaO3: A combined experimental and theoretical study
2017
A combined experimental and theoretical study of Mg-doped LaGaO3 electrolyte was carried out, with the aim to unveil the interaction between oxygen vacancy (Vo) and perovskite B site cations. LaGaO3 (LG) and LaGa0.875Mg0.125O2.938 (LGM0125) samples were comprehensively characterized by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray diffraction, in order to investigate short- and long-range structures of both undoped and Mg-doped materials. XAS analysis evidenced a preferential Ga-Vo interaction in LGM0125, confirmed by periodic hybrid density functional theory calculations, which were combined with a symmetry-independent classes (SICs) approach in order to (a) obtain a detailed picture of th…
Local structure of gallate proton conductors
2009
Lanthanum barium gallate proton conductors are based on disconnected GaO4 groups. The insertion of hydroxyls in the LaBaGaO4 network proceeds through self-doping with Ba2+, consequent O2- vacancy formation to fulfill charge neutrality. With a structural investigation on self-doped LaBaGaO4 oxides using synchrotron XRD and EXAFS on the Ga K-edge, we find that: (a) the GaO4 tetrahedra retain their size throughout the whole series; (b) the GaO4 tetrahedra rotate as rigid bodies on hydration, leading to the formation of a network of shorter O-O configurations that are stabilized by hydrogen bonds; (c) contraction of the lattice occurs along the a unit cell axis, as a consequence of an overall s…
Interaction of dicaffeoylquinic derivatives with peroxynitrite and other reactive nitrogen species.
2008
Plant phenolic antioxidants, among them catechins and hydroxycinnamoyl conjugates, constitute a well defined class of inhibitors of reactive nitrogen species (RNS). To gain deeper insight in this field, we examined the effects of 3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (DCA), its methyl ester (DCE) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in nitrative and oxidative processes. These compounds were found to be strong inhibitors of the nitration of tyrosine residues induced by ONOO- in bovine seroalbumin, with their IC50 values (10-40 microM) notably decreasing in the presence of bicarbonate. When studied on the intracellular protein tyrosine nitration induced by ONOO- in cultured murine fibroblasts as well a…
The Impact of Coconut Oil and Epigallocatechin Gallate on the Levels of IL-6, Anxiety and Disability in Multiple Sclerosis Patients
2020
Background: Due to the inflammatory nature of multiple sclerosis (MS), interleukin 6 (IL-6) is high in blood levels, and it also increases the levels of anxiety related to functional disability. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) decreases IL-6, which could be enhanced by the anti-inflammatory effect of high ketone bodies after administering coconut oil (both of which are an anxiolytic). Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the impact of coconut oil and EGCG on the levels of IL-6, anxiety and functional disability in patients with MS. Methods: A pilot study was conducted for four months with 51 MS patients who were randomly divided into an intervention group and a control group. The …
Influence of gallic acid esters on drug-metabolizing enzymes of rat liver
1982
The effect of three antioxidants, propyl, octyl and dodecyl gallate, on hepatic drug metabolism in male rats was studied in vivo and in vitro. When fed at a dietary concentration of 1% for 14 days, only dodecyl gallate increased relative liver weight. Cytochrome P-450 content was not influenced, but a slight increase in cytochrome b5 content was observed after the feeding of propyl gallate. Monooxygenase activity (benzo[a]pyrene-hydroxylase and ethoxycoumarin-deethylase activities) was not affected by propyl or octyl gallate, but a significant decrease in benzo[a]pyrene-hydroxylase activity was apparent in rats fed dodecyl gallate. Study of benzo[a]pyrene-metabolite formation in liver micro…
Antiasthmatic Effects of Galphimia glauca, Gallic Acid, and Related Compounds Prevent Allergen- and Platelet-Activating Factor-Ind…
1992
A methanolic extract from Galphimia glauca (320 mg/kg, orally) inhibited acute bronchial reactions to allergen (ovalbumin, 10 mg/ml) and platelet-activating factor (PAF, 1 microgram/ml) inhalation challenges, but not to histamine or acetylcholine in spontaneously breathing guinea pigs. Furthermore, the PAF-induced bronchial hyperreactivity was markedly reduced. Gallic acid and related compounds as well as the flavonoid, quercetin, were identified as active compounds. Gallic acid, methyl gallate and quercetin showed significant effects after a single oral dose of 45 mg/kg, tetragalloyl quinic acid after 5 mg/kg. Continuous treatment of the animals with one certain fraction (GG II, 3 days, 3 …
