Multicenter prospective study on the use and outcome of rehabilitation after total laryngectomy in Germany
2018
Background The purpose of this study was to assess the use and outcome of rehabilitation after total laryngectomy in Germany. Methods We enrolled patients who were scheduled for total laryngectomy, approached them again after surgery, after 3 months and 1 year. Patients completed questionnaires and were interviewed. Results Of 309 participants, 14% had not received any rehabilitation. Reasons for nonuse were primarily ongoing treatment and poor health. Users of rehabilitation had 4 times the odds of attaining any ability to speak compared to nonusers (odds ratio 3.8, P = .02). The main aim of rehabilitation from the perspective of the users was speech rehabilitation, mentioned by 71% before…

Rational Choice Theory and the Environment: Variants, Applications, and New Trends
2010
Rational choice theory (RCT) is a research paradigm based on methodological individualism. Collective phenomena are explained by assumptions about the behavior of (subjectively) rational individual or corporate actors. In environmental research, RCT is used to predict ecological perceptions, attitudes and behavior on the micro level, and to shed light on environmental outcomes on the macro level. The most fundamental insight from RCT is that environmental problems are often the result of a social dilemma, that is, individuals’ purposive action leads to unintended negative collective consequences. This chapter addresses variants of RCT including game theory, shows applications in the field o…
Another Look at Momentum Crashes
2015
This paper studies the profitability of a selection of prominent momentum-based strategies in the European Monetary Union. In contrast to past examples documenting the lack of profitability of unconditional price momentum in the most recent decade, the current research finds that unconditional price momentum yielded significant positive payoffs. There is evidence of option-like behavior for strategies based on intermediate past performance. Surprisingly, there is no such evidence for the momentum strategy based on recent past performance .
Determinants of translation-firm survival: A fuzzy set analysis
2016
Abstract This article presents an empirical analysis of determinants of the survival of firm or self-employed workers in the Spanish translation sector. In the midst of a global downturn, the survival of firm and self-employed workers is a key factor for the progress of the economy and for a better and more stable future. The analysis explores the combination of variables including human capital, contingency and economic investment that potentially drive translation and interpreting firms to survive. The study performs a comparative qualitative analysis using a fs/QCA methodology and identify seven combinations of causes that lead to the outcome. The results show that different causal paths…
Exploring the viability of equity crowdfunding as a fundraising instrument: A configurational analysis of contingency factors that lead to crowdfundi…
2020
Abstract With the growth in the use of crowdfunding platforms for fundraising, analysis of the key factors associated with successful crowdfunding has emerged as an interesting and oft-researched topic. Nonetheless, the equity crowdfunding market is still relatively under researched. The purpose of this paper is to explore how contingency factors combine and causally connect in leading to possible success or failure in equity crowdfunding rounds. To reach this goal, a configurational approach was chosen. Qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) is a suitable method for this topic because of its ability to identify and assess different combinations of conditions that explain certain outcomes. …
Spirit of strategy (S.O.S): The new S.O.S for competitive business
2015
Abstract This special issue discusses the Spirit of Strategy (S.O.S): The New S.O.S for Competitive Business . The special issue blends contextual information and cognitive knowledge from Global Innovation and Knowledge Academy (GIKA) contributions to improve decisions, tasks, performance, and outcome evaluations. The GIKA Annual Conference provides a platform to discuss challenges pertaining to contemporary issues. The 3rd GIKA Annual Conference took place at the University of Valencia and the Catholic University of Valencia (Spain) from July 7 to July 9, 2014. The Journal of Business Research ( JBR ) is the sponsor journal of the academy. One of the aims of the Conference is to select hig…
Innovation at universities: A fuzzy-set approach for MOOC-intensiveness
2016
Abstract Typologies can be an adequate tool for analyzing the complex cause–effect relationships between innovation and the supply of university courses. This study presents a new theoretical perspective on causal core and periphery factors for MOOC-intensiveness in universities using fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA). The findings show how this new theoretical perspective allows for two different typologies. Different configurations lead to an outcome combination of different core and peripheral conditions building on internal, strategic, and external factors. However, the two configurations leading to the absence of the outcome simply refer to the absence of a strategic f…
A review of negotiation outcome: A proposal on delimitation and subsequent assessment in joint venture negotiations
2009
Abstract In this study, we examine the outcomes of negotiation processes in joint ventures. Following a review of negotiation and strategy literature, we propose that satisfaction with the relationship created between partners is the most suitable indicator of negotiation outcome. This indicator is analyzed through the use of two parameters or variables: trust and uncertainty. The analysis is then used to bridge the gap that currently exists in the literature by proposing when a negotiation should be considered successful in joint ventures. One important conclusion of our study is that nonagreement should not always be valued in negative terms as in certain circumstances it can imply the mo…
Supplier behavior and its impact on customer satisfaction: A new characterization of negotiation behavior
2019
Abstract Many questions of customer/supplier negotiation dynamics remain unanswered. One reason behind this is that most existing models do not entirely reflect the complex relationship between negotiation behavior and the attained outcome of the negotiation process, analyzing the former from a purely dichotomous perspective. This study examines supplier negotiation behavior and how it impacts the outcome (satisfaction) from the customer´s perspective, thereby proposing a new characterization of negotiation behavior. Our analysis is based on a case study of 21 customer/supplier negotiations carried out by four leading supermarket chains in Costa Rica. Evidence supports our proposal that in …
