The e-ASTROGAM gamma-ray space observatory for the multimessenger astronomy of the 2030s

2018

e-ASTROGAM is a concept for a breakthrough observatory space mission carrying a gamma-ray telescope dedicated to the study of the non-thermal Universe in the photon energy range from 0.15 MeV to 3 GeV. The lower energy limit can be pushed down to energies as low as 30 keV for gamma-ray burst detection with the calorimeter. The mission is based on an advanced space-proven detector technology, with unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolution, combined with remarkable polarimetric capability. Thanks to its performance in the MeV-GeV domain, substantially improving its predecessors, e-ASTROGAM will open a new window on the non-thermal Universe, making pioneering observations of the…

Study of conformational effects of recombinant interferon gamma adsorbed on a non-porous reversed-phase silica support.

1995

Abstract Reversed-phase chromatography is a powerful method for separating recombinant interferon γ and one of its analogues differing only by a single amino acid residue. Structural differences of the proteins explain this separation ability as demonstrated from adsorption studies on a non-porous reversed-phase support. To reveal the structural differences occurring in the adsorbed state, two different and independent methods were employed. The variation of the retention with the slope of the linear gradient gave information about the molecular contact area of the protein with the support. For different experimental conditions, these data were correlated with the adsorbent capacities measu…

SHOCK-CLOUD INTERACTION AND PARTICLE ACCELERATION IN THE SOUTHWESTERN LIMB OF SN 1006

2014

The supernova remnant SN 1006 is a powerful source of high-energy particles and evolves in a relatively tenuous and uniform environment despite interacting with an atomic cloud in its northwestern limb. The X-ray image of SN 1006 reveals an indentation in the southwestern part of the shock front and the H I maps show an isolated (southwestern) cloud, having the same velocity as the northwestern cloud, whose morphology fits perfectly in the indentation. We performed spatially resolved spectral analysis of a set of small regions in the southwestern nonthermal limb and studied the deep X-ray spectra obtained within the XMM-Newton SN 1006 Large Program. We also analyzed archive H I data, obtain…

Alpha- and gamma-interferon (IFNα, IFNγ) but not interleukin-1 (IL-1) modulate synthesis and secretion of β2-microglobulin by hepatocytes

1988

Soluble serum beta 2-microglobulin has been thought to result from membrane shedding by activated T-lymphocytes. This hypothesis could explain the increase of beta 2-microglobulin serum levels during virally induced mononucleosis, but not elevated levels as observed in other virally induced and in malignant diseases. In this paper we demonstrate that beta 2-microglobulin is a true secretory protein, and that its synthesis in hepatocytes is modulated by IFNs but not by IL-1. While the 45,000 MW HLA antigen can be found only in cell lysates, beta 2-microglobulin is shown to be secreted also into the culture medium like other secretory proteins (e.g. albumin-factor B-complement C3). Furthermor…

SAR-studies of γ-secretase modulators with PPARγ-agonistic and 5-lipoxygenase-inhibitory activity for Alzheimer’s disease

2014

Abstract We present the design, synthesis and biological evaluation of compounds containing a 2-(benzylidene)hexanoic acid scaffold as multi-target directed γ-secretase-modulators. Broad structural variations were undertaken to elucidate the structure–activity-relationships at the 5-position of the aromatic core. Compound 13 showed the most potent activity profile with IC50 values of 0.79 μM (Aβ42), 0.3 μM (5-lipoxygenase) and an EC50 value of 4.64 μM for PPARγ-activation. This derivative is the first compound exhibiting low micromolar to nanomolar activities for these three targets. Combining γ-secretase-modulation, PPARγ-agonism and inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase in one compound could be a …

Experimental analysis of bubble size distributions in 2D gas fluidized beds

2010

Abstract The present work focuses on the development of a novel statistical approach for the analysis of the behavior of a 2D fluidized bed operating under bubbling and slugging conditions. Experimental data were collected by means of a purposely built lab-scale 2D fluidized bed and an original digital image analysis technique (DIAT), allowing the acquisition of a number of data sufficient to perform a statistical analysis of bubble dynamics. In particular, measurements of bubble size distributions (BSD) along the bed were performed. The analysis allowed to characterize the shape of BSD for different particle systems and fluidization gas velocities; interestingly a bimodal shape of BSD is o…

Cellular Mechanisms of Subplate-Driven and Cholinergic Input-Dependent Network Activity in the Neonatal Rat Somatosensory Cortex

2008

Early coordinated network activity promotes the development of cortical structures. Although these early activity patterns have been recently characterized with respect to their developmental, spatial and dynamic properties, the cellular mechanisms by which specific neuronal populations trigger coordinated activity in the neonatal cerebral cortex are still poorly understood. Here we characterize the cellular and molecular processes leading to generation of network activity during early postnatal development. We show that the somatosensory cortex of newborn rats expresses cholinergic-driven calcium transients which are synchronized within the deeply located subplate. Correspondingly, endogen…

Conflict between parasites with different transmission strategies infecting an amphipod host

2005

Competition between parasites within a host can influence the evolution of parasite virulence and host resistance, but few studies examine the effects of unrelated parasites with conflicting transmission strategies infecting the same host. Vertically transmitted (VT) parasites, transmitted from mother to offspring, are in conflict with virulent, horizontally transmitted (HT) parasites, because healthy hosts are necessary to maximize VT parasite fitness. Resolution of the conflict between these parasites should lead to the evolution of one of two strategies: avoidance, or sabotage of HT parasite virulence by the VT parasite. We investigated two co-infecting parasites in the amphipod host, G…
