Aim of the study To study recurrence-free rate (RFR) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) according to the smoking status in patients affected by non-muscle invasive carcinoma of the bladder (NMI-BC) treated by intravesical chemotherapy. Materials and methods Smoking status was recorded at study entry. Intravesical epirubicin was administered within 6 hours from TUR at the dose of 80 mg diluted in 50 ml of saline solution. Transport-related amino acid metabolism in germinating barley grains

When eight [14C]-labelled amino acids were separately injected into the endosperm of germinating (4 days at 20°C) barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Himalaya) grains, the label was rapidly taken up by the scutellum and further transported to the shoot and roots. Some of the amino acids (leucine, lysine and asparagine) were transported in an intact form through the scutellum to the seedling, whilst glutamic acid and aspartic acid were largely converted to glutamine in the scutellum. Proline was mainly transported unchanged, but a small part of the label appeared in glutamine. The role of hormone crosstalk in plant immunity is lately emerging as significant topic of plant physiology. Although crosstalk between salicylic acid and auxin affects plant disease resistance, molecular mechanisms of this process have not yet been uncovered in details. Mutations disrupting cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channel 4 (CNGC4) affect SA-mediated disease resistance in barley Hordeum vulgare and in A. thaliana. Differential localization of two acid proteinases in germinating barley (Hordeum vulgare) seed

A cathepsin D-like aspartic proteinase (EC 3.4.23) is abundant in ungerminated barley (Hordeum vulgare) seed while a 30 kDa cysteine endoproteinase (EC 3.4.22) is one of the proteinases synthesized de novo in the germinating seed. In this work, the localization of these two acid proteinases was studied at both the tissue and subcellular levels by immunomicroscopy. The results confirm that they have completely different functions. The aspartic proteinase was present in the ungerminated seed and, during germination, it appeared in all the living tissues of the grain, including the shoot and root. Characterization of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid oxidase from barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) seedlings and pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) needles

Abstract Biochemical characteristics of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) oxidase extracted from barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.) leaves and pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) needles were investigated. ACC oxidase from barley leaves was soluble while for complete recovery of ACC oxidase from pine needles addition of Triton X-100 to extraction medium was necessary. The enzyme required Fe 2+ , ascorbate and NaHCO 3 for maximum activity. A non-linear time course of ACC oxidase reaction indicated possible catalytic inactivation of the enzyme. The maximum activity was measured at pH 7.0–7.2 for ACC oxidase from both barley leaves and pine needles. The apparent K m for ACC was found to be 77 and …

The influence of α-aminophosphonic acids on the activity of aminopeptidase from barley seeds—an approach to determine the enzyme specificity

Inhibitory potencies of 24 α-aminophosphonic acids against barley seeds (Hordeum vulgare L.) metallo-aminopeptidase have been determined to evaluate structural requirements of this enzyme. The enzyme was sensitive mostly to the influence of phosphonic acid analogues of phenylalanine and its homologues, thus showing narrow specificity if compared with porcine aminopeptidases M1 and M17 and with Plasmodium aminopeptidase M17.
