Eryptosis is a physiological mechanism for the clearance of senescent or damaged erythrocytes by phagocytes. Excessive eryptosis is stimulated under several pathologies and associated with endothelial injury and thrombosis. Cigarette smoke (CS) is an established risk factor for vascular diseases and cigarette smokers have high-levels of eryptotic erythrocytes. Cell Cycle in Potentially Dedifferentiating Cereal Mesophyll Protoplasts Cultured in vitro. I. Abnormalities in Cycle Kinetics

Summary Protoplasts isolated from immature and mature mesophyll of wheat and oats were cultured in vitro . The potential progression from G1 (G0) to G2, through mitosis and cytokinesis was analysed. The degree and speed of progression through the cell cycle depended on the species and the state of maturity of the tissue from which the protoplasts were derived. In all the protoplast populations that were tested at least initiation of DNA synthesis was detected by labelling nuclei with the thymidine-analogue, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU). Changes in tubulin protein expression accompany reorganization of microtubular arrays during cell shaping in barley leaves

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) leaves grow from the base and thus exhibit a smooth developmental gradient. Developing mesophyll cells acquire their typical lobed shape synchronously along this gradient. Successive changes in the patterns of cortical microtubules are involved in the shaping process. The changes include formation and dispersal of band-like structures, the establishment of a random network and a dramatic loss of microtubules after completion of cell shaping. Reviewing the identity of the Maltese Polypodium (Polypodiaceae) – new evidence from morphology and flow cytometry

The first record of Polypodium from Gozo (Maltese Islands) was described as a new endemic taxon, Polypodium vulgare subsp. melitense, based on its unique set of morphological characters. It was treated as a novelty and designated as a subspecies of P. vulgare mainly due to the lack of paraphyses, the presence of 10–16 annular cells, and a mean spore length of 64 μm. The fern was reassessed by us employing a more rigid morphological analysis and the application of flow cytometry. Preliminary results about the breath of passive smokers and vapers based on the use of portable air monitoring devices

Abstract Preliminary studies were made on the effect of both, classical smoking and electronic cigarettes (ECs) vaping, based on the quality of the indoor air and the breath of passive smokers. Portable air monitoring devices were used to evaluate carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), particulate materials (PM), formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor air and breath of active and passive smokers and vapers. the paper intends to analyze the features of the Italian criminal law on cigarette smuggling. The domestic system faces the illicit tobacco trade in a very peculiar way, especially if compared with the criminal law of other European countries (e.g. Germany, Greece, Portugal and Spain). The Italian strict regulation (artt. 291 bis, ter, quarter T.U.D.) could appear also unreasonable if set side by side with the domestic legislation on smuggling of goods. Composting organic residue is an interesting alternative to recycling waste as the compost obtained may be used as organic fertilizer. This study aims to assess the composting process of rice straw and sewage sludge on a pilot-scale, to evaluate both the quality of the composts obtained and the effects of applying such compost on soil properties and plant development in pot experiments.
