Review of 8 years of experience with Infanrix hexa (DTPa-HBV-IPV/Hib hexavalent vaccine).
2009
Combination vaccines that include multiple antigens within one formulation are now widely accepted as an effective means of eliciting protection against several diseases at the same time. Owing to improvements in quality and convenient modes of administration, they have become part of routine pediatric practice. Hexavalent vaccines, including diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, polio and Haemophilus influenzae type b antigens represent the latest advance in the development of combination vaccines. Over 8 years since its first licensure, this review looks at the immunogenicity, efficacy and safety profile of the only hexavalent pediatric vaccine currently in use--Infanrix hexa (diph…
An AC-assisted single-nanowire electromechanical switch
2013
A unique two-source controlled nanoelectromechanical switch has been assembled from individual, single-clamped Ge nanowires. The switching behaviour was achieved by superimposing the control signals of specific frequencies to the electrostatic potential of the output terminals, eliminating the need for an additional gate electrode. Using an in situ manipulation technique inside a scanning electron microscope, we demonstrate that the pull-out force required to overcome adhesion at the contact can be significantly reduced by exciting mechanical resonant modes within the nanowire.
The Sustainability Factor: How Much Do Pension Expenditures Improve in Spain?
2020
The reform of 2013 represented a qualitative leap in the reform of the Spanish pension system. Unlike its predecessors, it introduced two automatic resetting mechanisms similar to those of other European countries. The first is the sustainability factor, scheduled to come into effect in 2019 but delayed until 2023, and its ultimate reversal cannot be ruled out. The objective of this study was to quantify the savings, or the lowest expenditure, that can be achieved in the Spanish public contributory pension system by applying it. These savings are measured in terms of cash&mdash
Harnessing medically relevant metals onto water-soluble subphthalocyanines: towards bimodal imaging and theranostics
2014
International audience; Subphthalocyanine (SubPc), a putative fluorophore for optical imaging (OI), was conjugated to chelating ligands (DOTA, DTPA) affording water-soluble conjugates complexed with (non-radioactive) metals relevant to the following medical imaging techniques/therapies: MRI (Gd), PET (Cu, Ga), SPECT (In, Ga, Lu), RIT (Cu, Lu, Y), and NCT (Gd). Magneto-optical properties of ditopic gadolinium species (and optical properties of other metal containing species) were examined (brightness (ε × Φ F) and relaxivity R 1) and fluorescence confocal/biphoton microscopy studies were conducted. † Electronic supplementary information (ESI) available: Experimental characterization, NMR and…
Deficiencies in reporting results of lesbians and gays after donor intrauterine insemination and assisted reproductive technology treatments: a revie…
2015
At a time when increasing numbers of lesbians and gays consider parenthood using reproductive assistance in infertility centers, the present review aims to summarize the results obtained so far by lesbians after intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in-vitro fertilization (IVF) using donor spermatozoa (D-IUI and D-IVF, respectively) and gays entering into gestational-surrogacy programs. Data show that gays display normal semen parameters and lesbians exhibit no specific causes of female infertility except perhaps for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and some PCOS-related factors. Pair-bonded lesbians entering into D-IUI programs, tend to have higher pregnancy and delivery percentages followin…
How Parallel Markets Fueled Chronic Shortage in the Soviet Official Sector
1999
The paper presents a disequilibrium model of a pre-transition centrally planned economy, with explicit description of labour supply to the official sector, as well as illegal economic activities. Under weak assumptions, raising official prices for deficit goods leads to even higher inflation in the shadow sector and increases the labour supply to the official sector. However, aggregate supply does not grow as much as income, and (flow) excess demand in the official sector goes up, while excess demand in the aggregate market remains positive. Simulation results suggest that our assumptions and conclusions are consistent with estimates of monetary overhang obtained (in a different way) by oth…
Effects of Fiscal Stimulus in Structural Models
2010
The paper assesses, using seven structural models used heavily by policymaking institutions, the effectiveness of temporary fiscal stimulus. Models can, more easily than empirical studies, account for differences between fiscal instruments, for differences between structural characteristics of the economy, and for monetary-fiscal policy interactions. Findings are: (i) There is substantial agreement across models on the sizes of fiscal multipliers. (ii) The sizes of spending and targeted transfers multipliers are large. (iii) Fiscal policy is most effective if it has some persistence and if monetary policy accommodates it. (iv) The perception of permanent fiscal stimulus leads to significant…
Modelling pavement surface characteristics for noise prediction through Bailey-related indicators
2021
The aggregate gradation of bituminous mixtures (hot mix asphalts, HMA) is one of the major factors affecting their surface texture. In turn, this latter is a crucial factor and influences drivers and bystanders’ safety, comfort, and health. Despite this, the design of texture levels still lacks sound bases and dedicated algorithms and this negatively affects the acoustic design of bituminous mixtures. Consequently, the objectives of this study were confined into the derivation of relationships to be used in mix design to predict texture levels. Experimental data were analyzed, in the pursuit of setting up appropriate models and algorithms. Analyses involved the consideration of Bailey-relat…
Effect of free rotation in polypyridinic ligands of Ru(ii) complexes applied in light-emitting electrochemical cells
2013
In the present work we report the synthesis and the electrochemical, photoluminescent and electroluminescent properties of two new Ru(II) complexes described by the general formula [Ru(phen)2X](2+), where phen is 1,10-phenanthroline. The X ligand consists of a 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) unit substituted with two phenyl rings connected to the bpy core through a saturated (Lhydro = 4,4'-diphenylethyl-2,2'-bipyridine) or a conjugated (LH = 4,4'-bis(α-styrene)-2,2'-bipyridine) carbon-carbon bridge. The photoluminescent spectra indicate that, both in solution and solid state, the complex bearing the aliphatic substitution bridges exhibits a higher quantum yield and a longer excited state lifetime tha…
Physicochemical Characterization of σ-Bonded Aryl Iron(III) Porphycenes. X-ray Structures of (EtioPc)Fe(3,5-C6F2H3) and (EtioPc)In(C6H5), Where EtioP…
1998
A series of iron(III) σ-bonded porphycenes are characterized by their electrochemical and spectroscopic properties. The investigated compounds are represented as (EtioPc)Fe(R), where EtioPc = the dianion of 2,7,12,17-tetraethyl-3,6,13,16-tetramethylporphycene and R = C6H5, 3,5-C6F2H3, 3,4,5-C6F3H2 or 2,3,5,6-C6F4H. Each compound is characterized as to its ESR, NMR, and UV−visible properties which are compared to corresponding compounds in an analogous series of (OEP)Fe(R) and (OETPP)Fe(R) derivatives where OEP and OETPP are the dianions of octaethyl- and octaethyltetraphenylporphyrin, respectively. The (EtioPc)Fe(R) complexes contain either high- or low-spin Fe(III), depending on the specif…
