Three dimensional nanoscale analysis reveals aperiodic mesopores in a covalent organic framework and conjugated microporous polymer.

2019

The integrated analytical approach developed in this study offers a powerful methodology for the structural characterisation of complex molecular nanomaterials. Structures of a covalent organic framework based on boronate esters (COF-5) and a conjugated microporous polymer (Aza-CMP) have been investigated by a combination of several electron microscopy techniques elucidating the three-dimensional topology of the complex polycrystalline (COF) and non-crystalline (CMP) materials. Unexpected, aperiodic mesoporous channels of 20-50 nm in diameter were found to be penetrating the COF and CMP particles, which cannot be detected by X-ray diffraction techniques. The mesopores appear to be stable un…

On-surface covalent linking of organic building blocks on a bulk insulator.

2011

On-surface synthesis in ultrahigh vacuum provides a promising strategy for creating thermally and chemically stable molecular structures at surfaces. The two-dimensional confinement of the educts, the possibility of working at higher (or lower) temperatures in the absence of solvent, and the templating effect of the surface bear the potential of preparing compounds that cannot be obtained in solution. Moreover, covalently linked conjugated molecules allow for efficient electron transport and are, thus, particularly interesting for future molecular electronics applications. When having these applications in mind, electrically insulating substrates are mandatory to provide sufficient decoupli…

Star-Shaped Conjugated Systems

2010

The present review deals with the preparation and the properties of star-shaped conjugated compounds. Three, four or six conjugated arms are attached to cross-conjugated cores, which consist of single atoms (B, C+, N), benzene or azine rings or polycyclic ring systems, as for example triphenylene or tristriazolotriazine. Many of these shape-persistent [n]star compounds tend to π-stacking and self-organization, and exhibit interesting properties in materials science: Linear and non-linear optics, electrical conductivity, electroluminescence, formation of liquid crystalline phases, etc.

How far will Silicon nanocrystals push the scaling limits of NVMs technologies?

2004

For the first time, memory devices with optimized high density (2E12#/cm/sup 2/) LPCVD Si nanocrystals have been reproducibly achieved and studied on an extensive statistical basis (from single cell up to 1 Mb test-array) under different programming conditions. An original experimental and theoretical analysis of the threshold voltage shift distribution shows that Si nanocrystals have serious potential to push the scaling of NOR and NAND flash at least to the 35 nm and 65 nm nodes, respectively.

Direct Numerical Methods for Optimal Control Problems

2003

Development of interior point methods for linear and quadratic programming problems occurred during the 1990’s. Because of their simplicity and their convergence properties, interior point methods are attractive solvers for such problems. Moreover, extensions have been made to more general convex programming problems.

Constraint handling in efficient global optimization

2017

Real-world optimization problems are often subject to several constraints which are expensive to evaluate in terms of cost or time. Although a lot of effort is devoted to make use of surrogate models for expensive optimization tasks, not many strong surrogate-assisted algorithms can address the challenging constrained problems. Efficient Global Optimization (EGO) is a Kriging-based surrogate-assisted algorithm. It was originally proposed to address unconstrained problems and later was modified to solve constrained problems. However, these type of algorithms still suffer from several issues, mainly: (1) early stagnation, (2) problems with multiple active constraints and (3) frequent crashes.…

Conflict resolution in the multi-stakeholder stepped spillway design under uncertainty by machine learning techniques

2021

Abstract The optimal spillway design is of great significance since these structures can reduce erosion downstream of the dams. This study proposes a risk-based optimization framework for a stepped spillway to achieve an economical design scenario with the minimum loss in hydraulic performance. Accordingly, the stepped spillway was simulated in the FLOW-3D® model, and the validated model was repeatedly performed for various geometric states. The results were used to form a Multilayer Perceptron artificial neural network (MLP-ANN) surrogate model. Then, a risk-based optimization model was formed by coupling the MLP-ANN and NSGA-II. The concept of conditional value at risk (CVaR) was utilized…

The design of absorbing Bayesian pursuit algorithms and the formal analyses of their ε-optimality

2016

The fundamental phenomenon that has been used to enhance the convergence speed of learning automata (LA) is that of incorporating the running maximum likelihood (ML) estimates of the action reward probabilities into the probability updating rules for selecting the actions. The frontiers of this field have been recently expanded by replacing the ML estimates with their corresponding Bayesian counterparts that incorporate the properties of the conjugate priors. These constitute the Bayesian pursuit algorithm (BPA), and the discretized Bayesian pursuit algorithm. Although these algorithms have been designed and efficiently implemented, and are, arguably, the fastest and most accurate LA report…

Greedy versus Dynamic Channel Aggregation Strategy in CRNs: Markov Models and Performance Evaluation

2011

Part 1: - PE-CRN 2011 Workshop; International audience; In cognitive radio networks, channel aggregation techniques which aggregate several channels together as one channel have been proposed in many MAC protocols. In this paper, we consider elastic data traffic and spectrum adaptation for channel aggregation, and propose two new strategies named as Greedy and Dynamic respectively. The performance of channel aggregation represented by these strategies is evaluated using continuous time Markov chain models. Moreover, simulation results based on various traffic distributions are utilized in order to evaluate the validity and preciseness of the mathematical models.

Towards Better Integration of Surrogate Models and Optimizers

2019

Surrogate-Assisted Evolutionary Algorithms (SAEAs) have been proven to be very effective in solving (synthetic and real-world) computationally expensive optimization problems with a limited number of function evaluations. The two main components of SAEAs are: the surrogate model and the evolutionary optimizer, both of which use parameters to control their respective behavior. These parameters are likely to interact closely, and hence the exploitation of any such relationships may lead to the design of an enhanced SAEA. In this chapter, as a first step, we focus on Kriging and the Efficient Global Optimization (EGO) framework. We discuss potentially profitable ways of a better integration of…
