Thermodynamics of a polymer blend solution system studied by gel permeation chromatography and viscosity

Binary and ternary interaction parameters and their derivatives have been calculated with the Flory-Huggins formalism developed for a ternary polymer system. The equilibrium compositions of the ternary system tetrahydrofuran/polybutadiene/polystyrene that forms two phases in equilibrium at 25°C have been used to solve the binodal equations. With this set of parameters, the viscosimetric interaction parameters have been computed. Species-Specific Aggregation Factor in Sponges

An aggregation factor (AF) from the siliceous sponge Suberites domuncula has been isolated and purified by the following steps: Sepharose 2 B gel chromatography, sucrose gradient, Nonidet treatment, Sephadex G-100 gel chromatography and DEAE-Sephadex ion-exchange chromatography. By this procedure the AF was purified 1340-fold with a 63% yield nearly to homogeneity. The AF is originally associated with large particles, characterized by a sedimentation of 2200 S. These particles have been visualized electron microscopically; they are characterized by a filament-like shape of a length of 3400 A and a cross-sectional diameter of 230 A. Characterization of the trimeric, self-recognizing Geodia cydonium lectin I.

A D-galactose-specific lectin I was extracted from the sponge Geodia cydonium and purified by affinity chromatography. The molecular weight of lectin I as determined by high-pressure liquid gel chromatography, was found to be 36500 +/- 1300. Disc gel electrophoresis in the presence and in the absence of sodium dodecyl sulfate showed that lectin I is a trimer composed of three different subunits (Mr: 13800, 13000 and 12200); two of the three subunits are linked by one disulfide bond. Isoelectric focusing gave a pI of 5.6 for the native molecule and a pI of 4.4 and of 7.4 for the subunits. Preferential solvation of poly(methyl methacrylate) and a bisphenol A diglycidyl ether by size-exclusion chromatography

The preferential adsorption coefficient, lambda, of poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA, in solutions formed by an epoxy resin in tetrahydrofuran (THF), was studied by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC). Only PMMA of lowest molar mass was preferentially solvated by epoxy but at low concentrations of epoxy in the mixture. At higher epoxy content PMMA was preferentially solvated by THF. A simultaneous and competitive solvation between the specific interactions PMMA-epoxy and the self association of epoxy at high concentrations would be the responsible of this inversion point. An automated synthesis protocol has been developed for the preparation of oligo(p-benzamide)s on solid support using a commercial peptide synthesizer employing a variation of standard Fmoc chemistry. Bis(trichloromethyl carbonate) in NMP was used to activate the aromatic carboxylic acids for acylation of secondary aromatic amines on solid support. N-Protected hepta(p-benzamide) was automatically prepared on solid support and manually converted to a solid supported block co-oligomer by attaching a poly(ethylene glycol) chain. The method studied uses a combination of a solid-matrix dispersion partition (SMDP) followed by high-performance size-exclusion chromatography on a minicolumn (HPmSEC) of 7.8 mm I.D. for the separation of pyrethroid (PYR) residues from fatty material. The solid-matrix dispersion extraction is carried out by absorbing a fat solution onto an Extrelut-3 cartridge (filled with a macroporous diatomaceous material) and extracting the PYR residues with acetonitrile. Up to 1 g of fatty material can be extracted with 15 ml acetonitrile. Influence of template basicity and hydrophobicity on the molecular recognition properties of molecularly imprinted polymers

Abstract Triazine herbicides were used as model templates for a basic study of the molecular recognition process in imprinted polymers. Five structurally related triazine herbicides (atrazine, ametryn, cyanazine, prometryn and terbutylazine) that differ in basicity and hydrophobicity were imprinted. Chromatographic evaluation of the resulting materials in an aqueous-poor mobile phase showed that the selectivity for the template increased with its Bronsted basicity whereas it did not correlate with template hydrophobicity. Abstract The separation efficiency of gel chromatographic columns was investigated under a wide variety of experimental conditions. By use of reduced quantities it is possible to describe the separation efficiency for different gels and experimental conditions by a single equation. Deviations from this equation were found to be caused by an alteration of the diffusion coefficient within the gel with respect to the mobile phase. Factors governing the gel chromatography of p -oligophenylenes on poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(styrene) gels are generalized and discussed.

Gel permeation Chromatography in coiled columns

Whereas in gas chromatography the use of coiled columns is the usual procedure, in liquid chromatography the use of straight columns is favoured. Bent columns give an additional contribution to peak spreading which is of greater importance in liquid chromatography than in gas chromatography owing to smaller diffusion coefficients. The low linear velocities of the mobile phase used in gel permeation chromatography enable conditions to be found where the additional contribution of bending to peak spreading is small.
