Italian Heroines: Literature, Gender, and the Construction of the Nation
2019
Scholarship on Italian nationhood has historically focused on heroes rather than on heroines, in line with the established gendered dialectical relationship between the female nation (who nurtures those who fight for her), and the male patriot, who both adores and possesses her. However, it is argued that Italian literary heroines prove at least as productive as heroes, if not more, when it comes to generating alternative views on the nation. This essay offers an introduction to a themed issue that aims to fill this scholarly gap in relation to ideas about the Italian nation and nationhood.
Subjetivación y Feminismo: Análisis de un manifiesto político
2004
The theme of this article is the the Italian feminist movement of the 1980s. That movement was characterised by political transformation and a crtitique of identity. The article takes as its point of departure the inaugural speech of the movement, the manifesto "Piu donne che uomini" (1983). The analysis that we present is inspired in the work of Michel Foucault. It aims to show to that the production of new feministic subjectivities, when fighting the symbolic dimension of masculine domination, has an intrinsically political character. In the 1980s, in the Italian context and particularly in the feminist movement, the rules of the political game set up by the events of 1968 materialized. T…
Exclusión discursiva. Hacia un nuevo concepto de la exclusión social
2011
The term “social exclusion” has been converting into a buzzword in European social sciences in the last decade. But the double use of the notion, as a concept of social politics as well as a sociological concept is producing a blurring of its contents. The aim of this article is to offer an approach which is able to satisfy the theoretic requirements for an analytical sociological concept by making use of the concept of discursive exclusion. Therefore the text develops the notion of discursive exclusion based on the most recent findings about sociological discourse theory and its contributions to the understanding of the construction of social reality. The process of social exclusion has to…
La participación en asociaciones de los inmigrantes africanos. Vías de interpretación del distanciamiento asociativo
2013
This article is focused on the reasons for non-participation of African population in immigrant associations. To understand this question, we conducted semi-structured interviews with persons who decided consciously no to participate in associations and organizations that worked with immigrants. All this work was developed in Catalonia, Valencia and Navarra, from a multilocal research perspective. We interpret the associative detachment, as a voluntary distancing based on the absence of information, lack of time, disenchantment, proprietorship activism, passively waiting, or because they are the only user population. Nevertheless, there are other factors of greater significance, as the poli…
Perceptions of Refugees Towards Finns and Immigrants
2021
Building off of the previous two chapters, this chapter looks at the refugee experience from the point of view of the refugee. While the overwhelming majority of integrated threat studies have been conducted from the point of view of the dominant culture, and a few from the point of view of an immigrant or minority’s perspective, none have explored threat from the point of view of a refugee. Therefore, for a more holistic picture of the Finnish migration situation, and the situation of refugees in Finland, we explored how refugees see threat, migration, their situation, Finns, and other immigrants in Finland. Thus, through the use of in-depth interviews, this chapter explores the perception…
Asimmetrie di genere e di razza in The Grass is Singing di Doris Lessing
2011
Published in the early 1950s, The Grass is Singing (1950), the first work by Doris Lessing (who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2007), through the deconstruction of certain normative characters traditionally attributed to Englishness, anticipates in its narrative plot some of those founding issues that, in the decades to come, would be explored both by the theoretical-critical writings of Second Wave Feminism and within that complex study field which became known over the Seventies, such as (post-) colonial studies. In the novel, the body of the white colonial woman living in the colonies is depicted as the site of opposite tensions and the traditional homogeneity of the group…
With children in their lived place: children's action as research data
2012
Abstract This article discusses theory and methods of researching the everyday experiences of children in the city environment combined with the question of giving a voice to children. The article is organised into three parts. Part one provides a conceptual background, theorising the relational as well as intergenerational character of the concept of environment. The cultural-geographical theory and the concept of Thirdspace are used. Part two illustrates the theoretical and methodological themes with reference to my study with children. I explored the encounter between children and the urban environment. I applied ethnographic tours around a city block with children and the children's spo…
Beginning Becoming: The First 1000 Days
2019
Thomas Balmes’ (Babies. Studio Canal documentaries, 2010) ‘Babies’ (Baby(ies) or Bebes) provides a glimpse into the earliest experiences of four infants from four different localities in the world. Although this movie offers no interpretation of what takes place, the discerning viewer is left in no doubt of the significance of these powerful images about infants and their ways of being, doing and knowing in the earliest phases of life. The provocations of ‘Babies’ offer a useful beginning orienting place for a book – almost 10 years later – that promises to focus on becoming in the first 1000 days across a different set of five countries – this time Australia, Finland, New Zealand, Norway a…
