[Abstract] The aim of this study was to identify differences in technical-tactical behaviour between the men and women first division football teams of the Spanish league, to this end 68 matches corresponding to 2016/17 season were analysed. A comparative analysis of the medians was carried out using the Mann-Whitney U-tests were conducted as post hoc tests. Gender in translating lesbianism in The Second Sex

2011

Drawing on three Chinese translations of the lesbian chapter in Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex, this paper examines at the micro level how the discussions on lesbianism in the work are translated and what role gender identity plays in the process of translation. Lesbianism has played an important part in feminism. However, homosexuality is still regarded as unacceptable to most Chinese people. Thus, an examination of translations of lesbianism in The Second Sex might be especially revealing in terms of representation of Western feminism. The comparison reveals that there are obvious differences between the translations by the female translators and the male translators. The differences…

The Birth of the Queen/the Modern Homosexual: Historical Explanations Revisited

1997

In this paper I review a number of explanations for the emergence of the modern homosexual category in Western (mainly Northwest European) cultures. I suggest there are four different emphases in respect of the social and cultural factors given priority in interpretations of the formation of the homosexual category. Of course, individual studies have often taken into consideration more than one single factor (most notably, Greenberg, 1988; Chauncey, 1994), and the grouping of previous studies that I here suggest only indicates where the focus of a given study is. The social and cultural factors emphasized in these four approaches are: 1) the effects of competitive capitalism on the bourgeo…

Exploiting for Care: Trafficking and Abuse in Domestic Work in Italy

2017

ABSTRACTCare workers are now an essential part of reality for many Italian families. Yet, despite advancements in regulating domestic work, abuses are widespread. This article explores why exploitation in domestic work is rarely viewed as such and addressed with policies concerning trafficking and exploitation. I look at the way in which the care issue has been addressed by the Italian state and at the peculiar relationship between employers and domestic workers. Furthermore, I focus on the gaps in policies on trafficking and exploitation. I argue that the interplay of these factors results in the “normalization” of exploitation in domestic work.

Aging men, masculinities and modern medicine: An introduction

2013

This new focus on men as a research category has coincided with rapidly increasing aging populations in Western nations, with attendant concerns about the consequences for already-strained health and social service systems. World Health Day in 20 12, for example, focused on the theme of aging and health, aiming no less than for a 'need to reinvent aging' (WHO 2012) . Since the late 1990s, the 'aging male' in particular has become the focus of an expanding constellation of professional and health promotion concerns. As the mission statement of the International Society for the Study of the Aging Male put it, 'healthy aging and survival of men will have an impact on both family and society. T…

Le “plaisir sucré” de la duchesse : un point sur la production du « galant de Madame » à la fin du Moyen Âge. https://preo.u-bourgogne.fr/crescentis/…

2021

Among the range of products elaborated in the Dukes of Burgundy vineyards at the end of the Middle Ages, the galant is first quoted in 1383. This paper strives to shed new light upon the sources in which the galant appears, i.e. the accountability documentation of the Dukes’ vineyards. Our research focuses on two demesnes located near Dijon: Talant and Chenôve.The study of this rare product (2-4% of total production), which was certainly flavored with gentian, shows that the notion of fortified wine should be reconsidered for the 14th and 15th centuries. The galant was obtained only by heating white grape must in a cauldron, searching to reach a diminution of one- or two-thirds of the basic…

Multiculturalism, Multilingualism and the Self : Studies in Linguistics and Language Learning

2017

This book offers several insights into cross-cultural and multilingual learning, drawing upon recent research within two main areas: Language Studies and Multilingual Language Learning/Teaching. It places particular emphasis on the Polish learning environment and Poles abroad. Today’s world is an increasingly complex network of cross-cultural and multilingual influences, forcing us to redefine our Selves to include a much broader perspective than ever before. The first part of the book explores attitudes toward multiculturalism in British political speeches, joking behaviour in multicultural working settings, culture-dependent aspects of taboos and swearing, and expressive language of the i…
