Gender Inequalities and Social Sustainability. Can Modernization Diminish the Gender Gap in Political Knowledge?
2020
The gender gap in political knowledge is a classical problem of Western democracies. In the 21st century, political knowledge is still unequally distributed between men and women, as many cross-section studies have shown. This is an indicator of women’s disempowerment and the distance which remains to be covered to achieve an inclusive and sustainable society. Could public policies and gender equality laws change the situation? Using a longitudinal database in which 600,000 survey responses are analysed from 1996 to 2017, this case study of Spain aims to shed some light on this question. It combines sociological and political approaches in line with the development theory of the gender gap …
Victim Blaming and Recognition: Boundaries of Media Discourse on Gender Violence
2016
Gendered power relations in the digital age : an analysis of Japanese women’s media choice and use within a global context
2021
This study investigates the persistence of gendered choice and use of media, particularly in Japanese domestic settings. It shows how women’s significant presence in the digital media environment does not necessarily translate into substantial changes in gendered power dynamics in choosing and using particular media for certain purposes at home. This project’s authors, researchers from Argentina, Finland, Israel, Japan, and the US, analyzed interview data from Japan by drawing on the Foucauldian concept of micro-level power, which is categorized into three main types: personal authority, media affordances, and space-time constellations. Through this process, we interviewed 77 individuals, r…
2012
The article argues for the convenience of using the notion of welfare regime instead of welfare state, since it encompasses the welfare that is produced by the private actors. It offers concepts and categories, distinctions and dimensions that enable us to better think and talk about the different political-administrative choices we confront. It proposes, besides, the advantages of what is called the “social policy by other means”, which consists on the state backing and strengthening of the private sources of welfare by means of the tools of constriction, encouragement and persuasion, and through the prevention-preservation of certain institutions and practices that are good for the welfar…

The linguistic representation of gender violence in (written) media discourse
2014
‘Woman’ is a key social actor, and a central conceptualization, in the construction of media discourses of gender-based violence. Scholarly research at the turn of the 21st century (Bengoechea 2000; Lledó 2002; Fernández Díaz 2003; Jorge 2004) showed that in the Spanish press, media discourses had a tendency to naturalize male aggression not as violence but as part of the (private) sexual arrangement between the sexes. In this paper we explore the treatment of the phrasemujer maltratada(EN ‘battered woman’) in intimate partner violence newspaper articles from 2005 to 2010. Our aims are: (i) to account for the discursive representation of violence against women (VAW) in Spanish contemporary …

Contemporary Discourses of Hate and Radicalism across Space and Genres
2017
This unique volume brings together various academic voices and critical reflections on discursive manifestations of hate and radicalism in contemporary public discourses. The authors venture into an array of socio-political contexts and public spaces, providing a compelling overview of similarities and divergences, continuities and discontinuities, outward hatred and the “politics of denial”, the use of collective symbols and construction of individual identities. Multiple genres are taken under scrutiny, including blogs, forums, internet websites and newspaper coverage, political speeches and debates, news reports and broadcast interactions, with a view to capturing the themes and pragma-r…
Living with Television: The Violence Profile
2015
