(Re-)Balancing the Triforce : Gender representation and androgynous masculinity in the Legend of Zelda series
2019
The Legend of Zelda series is one of the most beloved and acclaimed Japanese video game franchises in the world. The series’ protagonist is an androgynous male character, though recent conversations between Nintendo and players have focused on gender representation in the newest title in the series, Breath of the Wild. Considering these discussions, this article provides an analysis of Link, the protagonist and player character of The Legend of Zelda series. This analysis includes a discussion of the character’s androgynous design, its historical context, official Nintendo paratextual material, developer interviews, and commentary from fans and critics of the series. As an iconic androgynou…
Decay, Disease and Death in Doris Lessing's "The Grass Is Singing": A Feminist Perspective
2018
The article analyses Lessing’s first and highly acclaimed novel of 1950, whose action is set in Southern Rhodesia in the 1940s (the country remained British self-governing colony until 1980). Its interpretation from the feminist and gender perspectives, which also involves issues of race and class, is closely related to the themesof decay, disease and death. The process of identity formation of the heroine appears to be the case of social constructionism, for it is completed on her spouse’s farm where Mary comes to live with the man who proves to be inadequate as a husband and farmer, and ultimately as a representative of the white race. The major causes of the gradual collapse and tragic e…
The stigma of feminism: disclosures and silences regarding female disadvantage in the video game industry in US and Finnish media stories
2021
This article examines how the issue of gender, particularly women’s (under)representation in the video game industry, is framed in US and Finnish media. Building on the notion of stigma surrounding feminism, the article examines discourse practices as acts of managing the image of feminism. The findings illustrate five stigma management strategies that offer the possibility of maintaining socially accepted ways of discussing gender inequality and portraying women in mainstream media. Using critical discourse analysis, the paper addresses how the use of these stigma management strategies connects with different contemporary feminisms. The strategies used and their ideological backgrounds var…
Non-abusing mothers’ agency after disclosure of the child’s extra-familial sexual abuse
2020
This qualitative study analysed the agency of eight non-abusing mothers in the Turkish Cypriot Community after disclosure that their child had been sexually abused by someone outside the family. The aim was to discover how, after disclosure, such mothers act to protect their children in the contexts of their family and community. The data were gathered via semi-structured in-depth interviews and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). In the nuclear family context, maternal agency emerged in the form of motherhood skills, including emotionally supporting the abused child, double-checking the child’s safety or limiting the child’s mobility, and controlling the actions…

At the Interface of National and Transnational: The Development of Finnish Policies against Domestic Violence in Terms of Gender Equality
2017
Although gender inequalities are the main social mechanisms behind the (re)production of domestic violence, policy responses to domestic violence as a gender-related problem vary at both the national and transnational levels. This article examines the interaction between national and transnational policies against domestic violence, focusing on how domestic violence is constructed as a gender-related problem in Finland, a Nordic welfare state that is often cited as a role model in gender equality. Using the conception of policies as historically changing and culturally specific discourses, this article offers an overview of the ways in which the perspective on domestic violence of the trans…
Ilustración, catolicismo y género. Feijoo en el debate historiográfico
2023

Writing Oneself into Someone Else’s Story – Experiments With Identity And Speculative Life Writing in Twilight Fan Fiction
2015
Fan fiction offers rich data to explore readers’ understanding of gendered discourses informing the narrative construction of fictional and real-life identities. This paper focuses on gender identity construction in self-insertion fan fiction texts – stories that involve avatars of fan writers – based on Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight novels. Self-insertion fan fiction stories can be considered a form of life writing where authors play with their identity in a virtual context in texts that mix documentary elements and fiction; a combination that is here termed as speculative life writing. While earlier studies have discussed self-insertion fan fiction as a potentially empowering form of resista…
