Violence Through Words: Cultural Aspects and Performative Agency

2020

This chapter aims at describing the ways and ploys used by words (in the various public and private contexts where they define relations) conveying a form of symbolic violence aimed at classifying genders as they play out their respective identity roles. To this end, the author refers to “euphemized discourse” (Bourdieu, 1993) and the concept of “agency” (Duranti, Etnopragmatica. La forza nel parlare. Carocci Editore, Rome, Italy, 2007) in order to describe the process of naturalization of discursive practices geared towards affirmation of the androcentric system of language. Here, a variant of Mediterranean culture which remains patriarchal and sexist is examined by means of discourse anal…

Universality of the Triangular Theory of Love: Adaptation and Psychometric Properties of the Triangular Love Scale in 25 Countries

2021

The Triangular Theory of Love (measured with Sternberg’s Triangular Love Scale – STLS) is a prominent theoretical concept in empirical research on love. To expand the culturally homogeneous body of previous psychometric research regarding the STLS, we conducted a large-scale cross-cultural study with the use of this scale. In total, we examined more than 11,000 respondents, but as a result of applied exclusion criteria, the final analyses were based on a sample of 7332 participants from 25 countries (from all inhabited continents). We tested configural invariance, metric invariance, and scalar invariance, all of which confirmed the cultural universality of the theoretical construct of love …

Cross-national variation of gender differences in adolescent subjective health in Europe and North America

2005

The cross-national consistency and variation of gender differences in subjective health complaints was examined in a sample of 125732 11- to 15-year-olds from 29 European and North American countries, participating in the WHO collaborative study 'Health behaviour in school-aged children (HBSC) 1997/98'. Health complaints were measured with the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children Symptom Checklist. Gender differences in health complaints were analysed through multilevel logistic regression analysis. The results indicated a very robust pattern of increasing gender differences across age, with 15-year-old girls as a group at increased risk for health complaints across all countries. The m…

Intersectional Gender. Thinking about Gender and Cultural Difference in the Global Society.

2009

This paper offers locatedness, contextuality, and interconnectedness as crucial concepts for the analysis of gender and cultural differences in global societies. Taking into account the different voices of feminism, and being aware of the perils of essentialization, the concept of “intersectional gender” is proposed as analytical tool. The adjective “intersectional” expresses the idea that gender is inherently constituted and simultaneously shaped by race/ethnicity, culture/religion, and economic conditions. Intersectional gender, defined not as an additive but rather as a constitutive process, un- derscores that any form of gender discrimination is originated and interconnected with other f…

Homework practices: role conflicts concerning parental involvement

2016

ABSTRACTThis article on hand discusses results of an ethnographic study which aims to perform a detailed description of practices of doing homework in a domestic environment. Based on the international state of research, first the question and the methodical approach will be explained, subsequently the role conflicts and stress ratios developed while doing homework in a family environment will be presented on the basis of two contrasting cases. To conclude, the homework-linked intrusion of school into familiar surroundings, regarding the parental involvement in contradictory requirements, will be analysed.

Defending the Nordic model: Understanding the moral universe of the Norwegian working class

2021

In recent years, much attention has been paid to the white working class’ concern with their declining position in the neoliberal era. The hypothesis that social and economic insecurity provoke anger and xenophobia are unable to account for the Norwegian case. The Nordic model still acts as a buffer against neoliberal capitalism, making the white Norwegian working class less vulnerable than in comparable countries. This paper will argue that the Norwegian working class has defended the Nordic model by utilising a range of moral values. I use 56 qualitative interviews to examine the morality of the white Norwegian working class. The study is theoretically and methodologically inspired by Bol…

Performing ‘us’ and ‘other’ : Intersectional analyses of right-wing populist media

2020

Finland and Sweden share the ideal of a Nordic welfare state, with gender equality as a central tenet. In both countries, right-wing populist parties have gained prominence in mainstream politics. Despite similar political agendas at the moment, these parties have different political histories, and different modes of expressing their anti-immigration pleas. In this comparative study, we examine how the distinction between ‘us’ and the ‘other’ is performed intersectionally in terms of gender, social class, ethnicity and ‘race’, and sexuality. For this purpose, we examine empirical material collected from the party newspapers of the Finns Party and the Sweden Democrats, because their content…
