Editorial - Connecting the Dots: The Promises of Wharton's Jelly Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Tissue Repair and Regeneration

2011

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) constitute a variety of cellular populations which were described first about 35 years ago in the bone marrow (BM) stroma [1]. These years have foreseen an exponential increase of reports pointing out features, stemness, markers, tissue sources and clinical applications of these cells. Cells with MSC features can be isolated from virtually every adult organ in the body, as well from a group of fetus-associated sources (cells derived from the latter tissues are collectively known as perinatal stem cells) [2]. In recent years, the umbilical cord arose as a promising source of mesenchymal stem cells, which can be isolated in relatively high numbers (compared to BM)…

Lightweight LCP construction for next-generation sequencing datasets

2012

The advent of "next-generation" DNA sequencing (NGS) technologies has meant that collections of hundreds of millions of DNA sequences are now commonplace in bioinformatics. Knowing the longest common prefix array (LCP) of such a collection would facilitate the rapid computation of maximal exact matches, shortest unique substrings and shortest absent words. CPU-efficient algorithms for computing the LCP of a string have been described in the literature, but require the presence in RAM of large data structures. This prevents such methods from being feasible for NGS datasets. In this paper we propose the first lightweight method that simultaneously computes, via sequential scans, the LCP and B…

Hyaluronan alkyl derivatives-based electrospun membranes for potential guided bone regeneration: Fabrication, characterization and in vitro osteoindu…

2020

Item does not contain fulltext The aim of the work was to determine the effects of the chemical functionalization of hyaluronic acid (HA) with pendant aliphatic tails at different lengths and free amino groups in terms of chemical reactivity, degradation rate, drug-eluting features, and surface properties when processed as electrospun membranes (EM) evaluating the osteoinductive potential for a possible application as guided bone regeneration (GBR). To this end, a series of HA derivatives with different aliphatic tails (DD-Cx mol% ≈ 12.0 mol%) and decreasing derivatization of free amino groups (DD(EDA) mol% from 70.0 to 30.0 mol%) were first synthesized, namely Hn. Then dexamethasone-loaded…

A Micro Wind Generation System for Local DoS Applications

2010

In this paper a wind electrical power generation system for Distributed on Site (DoS) applications is proposed. This system was developed and conceived in order to guarantee simple installation, use and service, obtaining a product that can be easily industrialized and put into the market with limited costs. The field of application of such an electrical generation system is addressed towards domestic or at the most toward condominium applications concerning moreover the opportunity of working in addition to combined photovoltaic and solar-thermal systems to enhance the renewable energy generation at house level (DoS). The proposed system has its hot spot in the blades shape, in the wind fl…

A methodology for evaluation of operational zones for distributed generation based on DFIG

2017

This study developed a methodology to determine zones of acceptable voltage profiles for wind power generation connected to distribution systems. Three load profiles (residential, commercial and industrial) connected to the distribution network were analyzed considering the impact on voltage levels and steady-state stability for different wind speeds and wind generator control strategies. The wind generator model is based on doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) and were developed using Matlab/Simulink. The presented methodology can be used to map the impact on operation of different types of control, the time of day and the available wind speed and it is not limited only for DFIG. The resu…

Optimizing the generation system in a microgrid with power, thermal energy and mobility demands

2021

Microgrids are widely known to be the future of generation and distribution systems. This paper presents a method to optimize the size of the main components in a microgrid to supply the demands for electricity, heating and hydrogen for mobility through an Energy Hub model. The electricity production from a wind turbine, a CHP and a fuel cell satisfies the local electricity demand. The green hydrogen produced in the hub from renewable power in off-peak hours is used to feed the fuel cell or to meet the mobility demand. The heating power from CHP and fuel cell is used to feed the local district heating network.

DATA GENERATION FOR THE ACQUISITION OF THE UNIVERSITY COURSES OF INFORMATICS AND STATISTICS IN THE HEALTH CARE SPECIALITIES

2020

The authors of the present article are investigating the influence of the data generation in the university courses of informatics and statistics (UCIS) on the acquisition of both the UCIS and other study courses in the health care specialities. First of all, the authors inquired students in order to find out their attitude to the UCIS. The inquiry results show evidence that an important role in the acquisition of UCIS has the work/study material – data. The UCIS work/study material can be associated with various branches, including health care. The data of the health care patients are of a special status. Their use is strictly regulated/limited.by legislation. The authors of the present ar…

Thermolytic reverse electrodialysis heat engine: model development, integration and performance analysis

2019

Abstract Salinity gradient heat engines represent an innovative and promising way to convert low-grade heat into electricity by employing salinity gradient technology in a closed-loop configuration. Among the aqueous solutions which can be used as working fluid, ammonium bicarbonate-water solutions appear very promising due to their capability to decompose at low temperature. In this work, an experimentally validated model for a reverse electrodialysis heat engine fed with ammonium bicarbonate-water solutions was developed. The model consists of two validated sub-models purposely integrated, one for the reverse electrodialysis unit and the other for the stripping/absorption regeneration uni…

Oleuropein multicompartment nanovesicles enriched with collagen as a natural strategy for the treatment of skin wounds connected with oxidative stres…

2021

Aim: Collagen-enriched transfersomes, glycerosomes and glytransfersomes were specifically tailored for skin delivery of oleuropein. Methods: Vesicles were prepared by direct sonication and their main physicochemical and technological properties were measured. Biocompatibility, protective effect and promotion of the healing of a wounded cell monolayer were tested in vitro using fibroblasts. Results: Vesicles were mainly multicompartment, small (∼108 nm), slightly polydispersed (approximately 0.27) and negatively charged (~-49 mV). Oleuropein was incorporated in high amounts (approximately 87%) and vesicles were stable during four months of storage. In vitro studies confirmed the low toxicit…

Local structure studies of SrTi16O3and SrTi18O3

2014

In this work we report on the local structure of Ti in SrTi 16 O3 (STO16) and SrTi 18 O3 (STO18) investigated in the low temperature range (6‐300K) by extended x-ray absorption fine structure and x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy at Ti K-edge and by optical second harmonic generation (SHG). By comparing XANES of STO16 and STO18 we have identified the isotopic effect which produces at T < 100K a noticeable difference in the measured mean square relative displacements (MSRD) of Ti‐O1 bonds: while STO16 follow the expected Einstein-like behavior, for STO18 we have measured an increase of MSRD values with decreasing temperature. This is an indication of an increasing off…
