SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL TRANSITION: PRINCIPLES AND DESIGN GUIDELINES

2021

In these times of constant precariousness and insecurity, debates on the need for environmental sustainability are on the increase. There is a need to regenerate urban areas both by transforming the existing heritage while respecting historical memory, and by proposing "renewed" neighbourhoods with smartness, according to the use of renewable energy sources, eco-building, intelligent mobility, with a view to ecological transition. Immediate responses are needed to resource depletion on the one hand and the need to protect the quality of natural and environmental capital on the other. To achieve these goals, cities are called upon to play the role of drivers of sustainable development. By en…

GREEN REVOLUTION AND BUILT HERITAGE: CONCEPTS AND PERSPECTIVES OF ENVIRONMENTAL REGENERATION

2021

Urban and environmental regeneration is now a priority on a planetary level, and the climate neutrality objectives set by Brussels inevitably require a new green and sustainable design of cities and a total revision of human behaviour in relation to nature. Environmental regeneration requires an inclusive practice of architecture capable of metabolising the adaptations and contradictions of the built environment. With this in mind, and with no claim to being exhaustive, we will examine some of the "enabling" conditions and "indispensable" reasons for leading a process of environmental regeneration of the built heritage, analysing the critical points relating to public responsibilities, the …

Moderate overexpression of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase improves healthspan in mice. Implications in skeletal muscle regeneration

2019

An enormous increment in the average lifespan of diverse populations occurred worldwide in the 20th century. In the last 10–15 years, the importance has changed from extending average and even maximal longevity to favoring healthy aging, and many researchers have focused their studies on the aim at extending healthspan. Prolonging lifespan without taking care of improving healthspan can derive in a long time of living with disabilities and constitutes a risk factor for the old population to suffer a higher prevalence of aging-related diseases. Indeed, modern disease treatments frequently diminish mortality without any effect on the deterioration of overall health. Understanding the mechanis…

Column Adsorption Studies for the Removal of Ammonium Using Na-Zeolite-Based Geopolymers

2022

The aim of this study was to examine the removal of ammonium ions from a synthetic model solution by using Na-zeolite-based geopolymers. Na-zeolite (=analcime) is a residue from mining industry. Three adsorbents were prepared from Na-zeolite using different production steps and metakaolin as a blending agent. These novel adsorbents were investigated in a fixed-bed column system where the effects of different flow rates with the initial ammonium concentration of 40 mg/L were studied. The Thomas, Bohart–Adams and Yoon–Nelson breakthrough curve models fitted well with the experimental data with a high R2 value. After adsorption experiments, adsorbents were regenerated using a mixture of 0.2 M …

Husk Energy Supply Systems for Sunflower Oil Mills

2020

Together with solar, wind, and hydro renewable energy sources (RES), biomass constitutes an integral part of the high-renewables electricity systems. Considerable feedstocks for electricity generation are process-based residues. Ukraine is the world leader in sunflower seed production, therefore, husk (a by-product of oil production) is a promising biofuel for combustion- based power plants. The plants consume primarily electricity and fossil fuels (natural gas or fuel oil) for steam production. Their usage affects the edible oil production cost and impacts on climate change. The above facts force us to look for alternatives. By-product (husk) utilization can reduce exhaustible energy consu…

Building renovation, sustainability and urban regeneration

2015

The paper investigates issues related to the principles of eco-sustainability and criteria of de-sign choice to be made in respect to the characteristics of the interventions. It proposes cases of recovery and re-use sustainable in Sicily, whose choices of action were made in respect of the environment and local traditions. General directives: reduction of the energy consump-tion; use of recycled and recyclable materials;improvement of the thermo/igrometric. The programming is based not only on the control of the performance, but on an idea of global quality of the operations. The correspondence between the needs and the requirements of the organism and the norms that protect the user, it’s…

Selecting the special or choosing the common? A high-powered conceptual replication of Kim and Markus’ (1999) pen study

2022

Kim and Markus (1999) found that 74% of Americans selected a pen with an uncommon (vs. common) color, whereas only 24% of Asians made such a choice, highlighting a pronounced crosscultural difference in the extent to which people opt for originality or make majority-based choices. The present high-powered study (N = 729) conceptually replicates the results from Kim and Markus (1999; Study 3). However, our obtained effect size (r = .12) is significantly weaker than that of the original study (r = .52). Interestingly, given the globalization of mass media and the rapid economic progress of many Asian cultures during the last decades, a larger proportion of Chinese, but not American, participa…

Proposte per una rigenerazione urbana ed ecologica

2022

Starting from the definitions of resilience, this paper considers the urgent need for a trans-scalar and transdisciplinary approach to mitigate the errors of the past and to prevent the effects of global climate change. At an urban scale, vegetation performs ecosystem services aimed at urban resilience, thus contributing to increasing the quality of life. It reflected on the results of planning choices made in the past following natural events and we know that today are much worse than the events themselves. Through a case study, the paper illustrates some solutions for urban regeneration that looks at the ecological-environmental component.

Synthesis, Electrochemistry, and Photophysics of Aza-BODIPY Porphyrin Dyes

2016

International audience; The synthesis of dyad and triad aza-BODIPY-porphyrin systems in two steps starting from an aryl-substituted aza-BODIPY chromophore is described. The properties of the resulting aza-BODIPY-porphyrin conjugates have been extensively investigated by means of electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry, and absorption/emission spectroscopy. Fluorescence measurements have revealed a dramatic loss of luminescence intensity, mainly due to competitive energy transfer and photoinduced electron transfer involving charge separation followed by recombination.
