Recurrent lumbar disc herniation: Is there a correlation with the surgical technique? A multivariate analysis
2019
Purpose: The recurrence of a lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a common cause of poor outcome following lumbar discectomy. The aim of this study was to assess a potential relationship between the incidence of recurrent LDH and the surgical technique used. Furthermore, we tried to define the best surgical technique for the treatment of recurrent LDH to limit subsequent recurrences. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 979 consecutive patients treated for LDH. A multivariate analysis tried to identify a possible correlation between (1) the surgical technique used to treat the primary LDH and its recurrence; (2) technique used to treat the recurrence of LDH and the secon…
Behind the scenes of artificial intelligence: a study of micro-work platforms in France
2019
Este artículo es una versión resumida del informe “Le Micro-travail en France. Derrière l’automatisation de nouvelles précarités au travail?» This article is a summarized version of the report "Le Micro-travail en France. Derrière l’automatisation de nouvelles précarités au travail?" .; International audience; Micro-work internet services allocate small, standardized tasks of data generation and annotation to crowds of providers. The outputs are mainly used to produce artificial intelligence solutions. It is an exemplary instance of the “platformization” of the economy, and of the transformations of labour that digital technologies bring about. To uncover the conditions under which micro-wo…
Auditory cortical and hippocampal-system mismatch responses to duration deviants in urethane-anesthetized rats
2013
Any change in the invariant aspects of the auditory environment is of potential importance. The human brain preattentively or automatically detects such changes. The mismatch negativity (MMN) of event-related potentials (ERPs) reflects this initial stage of auditory change detection. The origin of MMN is held to be cortical. The hippocampus is associated with a later generated P3a of ERPs reflecting involuntarily attention switches towards auditory changes that are high in magnitude. The evidence for this cortico-hippocampal dichotomy is scarce, however. To shed further light on this issue, auditory cortical and hippocampal-system (CA1, dentate gyrus, subiculum) local-field potentials were …
Odmiana medialna języka a ustne wypowiedzi uczniów
2022
This article seeks to answer the question whether features of media language can be discerned in the utterances of the younger generation and, if so, which ones. The oral presentations performed during the secondary school final examinations (obtained from the recordings) were studied. They have never been analysed in this respect before. The presentations have, on the one hand, an official character and, on the other, are spontaneous as they are produced on an ad hoc and continuous basis, with no possibility of predicting their final shape. First, the article reviews the characterisation of media language by researchers working on the subject in order to establish a group of the most disti…
Modelli e approcci innovativi di restauro urbano e architettonico
2016
The essay proposes a contribution, from within the discipline of restoration, but at the same time open to interdisciplinarity, on operations in new territorial areas - peripheries, degraded centers. Restoration has the possibility of influencing them, nurturing new perspectives based on an ethical dimension, aimed at safeguarding - in the processes of regeneration - values such as the promotion of the person, the cultural dimension of development, the quality of life. The reflection engages on two concrete experiences of research and third mission operated on the Palermo outskirts of Brancaccio and on the town of Favara, in the province of Agrigento.
The suburbs as opportunity spaces of the conteporary city: towards a new and creative approach to the suburb regeneration issues, in Atti del Convegn…

Water-Soluble Cuprizone Derivative: Synthesis, Characterization, and in Vitro Studies
2019
The cuprizone mouse model is one of the most accepted model systems for the investigation of oligodendrocyte degeneration, a process critically involved in the pathogenesis of diseases such as multiple sclerosis or schizophrenia. In order to substitute the in vivo experiments by in vitro approaches, the amine derivative BiMPi is introduced as a water-soluble alternative to cuprizone. Regarding superoxide dismutase activity, toxicity for oligodendrocytes, and disturbance of mitochondrial membrane potential, BiMPi shows similar in vitro effects as is observed in vivo for cuprizone. peerReviewed
Genetic Factors as Promising Biomarkers of Sporadic Ascending Aortic Aneurysm
2014
Thoracic aorta shows various changes with advancing age and a progressive deterioration in structure and function. As a result, vascular remodeling (VR) and medial degeneration (MD) occur. VR and MD are typical entities of sporadic thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA), actually considered a common and serious health risk and a pathology by unclear mechanisms. Increased activity of the coagulation system, inflammation, activation of extracellular matrix remodeling and endothelial dysfunction pathways have been recently evidenced to have a key role in its onset. Thus, polymorphisms of the coagulation system [fibrinogen (rs1800790); Factor II ( rs1799963); Factor V (rs6025); Factor VII (rs121964926)…
Quantile index for gradual and abrupt change detection from CFB boiler sensor data in online settings
2012
In this paper we consider the problem of online detection of gradual and abrupt changes in sensor data having high levels of noise and outliers. We propose a simple heuristic method based on the Quantile Index (QI) and study how robust this method is for detecting both gradual and abrupt changes with such data. We evaluate the performance of our method on the artificially generated and real datasets that represent different operational settings of a pilot circulating fluidized bed (CFB) reactor and CFB cold model. Our experiments suggest that QI can be used for designing very simple yet effective methods for gradual change detection in the noisy sensor data. It can be also used for detectin…
How older and younger people see technology in Northern and Southern Europe : Closing the generation gap
2016
Background Mental representations of technology can be affected by many social and biological factors. The aim of this study was to test the effects of two of these factors, age and culture, on how people mentally represent and experience technologies by comparing the conceptions of old and young people in Spain and Finland. Both Spain and Finland are European countries, but they are historically, geographically, and culturally very different. Method The study is framed within the life-based design (LBD) paradigm, where culture and age interact to define particular forms of life in which technology might be used and perceived differently. We hypothesised that there are differences in the me…
