Financial development and intergenerational education mobility
2018
Using years of education as a measure of status, we study the relationship between financial development and intergenerational mobility, focusing on human capital investments boosted by financial deepening. We consider a set of indices to capture different components of the overall intergenerational education mobility. Using a sample of 39 countries, we find that financial development is related to structural mobility but not to exchange mobility. In particular, while we detect an inverted U-shaped relationship between financial development and structural mobility, we do not find any significant relationship with exchange mobility. Keywords: Intergenerational mobility, Financial development…
Do we value mobility?
2015
Is there a trade-off between people's preference for income equality and income mobility? Testing for the existence of such a trade-off is difficult because mobility is a multifaceted concept. We analyse results from a questionnaire experiment based on simple precise concepts of income inequality and income mobility. We fnd no direct trade-off in preference between mobility and equality, but an indirect trade-off, applying when more income mobility can only be obtained at the expense of some income inequality. Mobility preference - but not equality preference - appears to be driven by personal experience of mobility.
RENT CREATION AND RENT SHARING: NEW MEASURES AND IMPACTS ON TOTAL FACTOR PRODUCTIVITY
2019
International audience; This analysis proposes new measures of rent creation and rent sharing and assesses their impact on productivity on cross-country-industry panel data. We find first that: (1) anticompetitive product market regulations positively affect rent creation and (2) employment protection legislation boosts hourly wages, particularly for low-skill workers. However, we find no significant impact of this employment legislation on rent sharing, as the hourly wage increases are offset by a negative impact on hours worked. Second, using regulation indicators as instruments, we find that rent creation and rent sharing both have a substantial negative impact on total factor productivi…
Integrating retirement and permanent disability in NDC pension schemes
2015
ABSTRACTIn this article, we develop a theoretical basis for integrating retirement and permanent disability using a generic nonfinancial defined contribution framework. The methodology we use relies on a multistate overlapping generations model that includes the so-called survivor dividend. Currently, this feature can only be found in the Swedish defined contribution (DC) scheme. The results achieved in the numerical example we present endorse the fact that the model works well. Special attention is given to the assumptions made about mortality rates for disabled people and disability incidence rates, which largely determine the contribution rate assigned to disability. The model could be o…
In search of family business continuity: the case of transgenerational family entrepreneurship
2011
This qualitative case study analyses continuity of transgenerational entrepreneurship in the family business. Transgenerational entrepreneurship is based on multigenerational, and in this particular firm, on the founder and next generation, business activities in the same family business. Methodologically, the data was collected by interviewing members of two generations of Imagon Ltd.; the founder, and his sons. Imagon Ltd. shows signs of transgenerational continuity. It did not start off that way in the founder’s mind; his desire was just to work for himself and fulfil his own visions. It was only much later that the prospect of defining his company as a family business entered the pictur…
Stochastic monotonicity in intergenerational mobility tables
2010
SUMMARY The aim of this paper is to test for stochastic monotonicity in intergenerational socio-economic mobility tables. In other words, we question whether having a parent from a high socio-economic status is never worse than having one with a lower status. Using existing inferential procedures for testing unconditional stochastic monotonicity, we first test a set of 149 intergenerational mobility tables in 35 different countries and find that monotonicity cannot be rejected in hardly any table. In addition, we propose new testing procedures for testing conditional stochastic monotonicity and investigate whether monotonicity still holds after conditioning on a number of covariates such as…
Physiological and practical considerations on liver regeneration after liver transplantion
2019
2018
Educational co-planning and co-responsibility between school and family have been a subject of pedagogical consideration for several years. The literature identifies critical points in the construction of educational partnerships between them because of transformations occurred both in family and in school: they seem to have missed their clear symbolic value. Once, the roles of the adults (teacher or parent) were more important than the persons who actually embodied them; now, instead, we observe a loss in the symbolic value of generational gap and this has implied a change in the educational relationship. It is a shift from an educational style mainly based on authority and norms to one ba…
Analysis of magnetohydrodynamic generator driven by thermoacoustic engine for deep Space applications
2020
This paper discusses the results of theoretical and experimental investigation of magnetohydrodynamic generator with liquid metal working body. This electric machine is used to convert mechanical energy, supplied by thermoacoustic engine, to an AC form of electrical energy. The purpose of this technology is an electricity production in deep Space, potentially suitable for long term missions far away from Sun.
Optimal Operating Point Calculation for Medium Voltage Distribution Systems
2007
The paper deals with the calculation of the optimal working point of a distribution system, equipped with several distributed generators, able to operate also autonomously, i.e. disconnected from the main grid. When connected to the main grid, it appears in general convenient to assign the slack bus role to the bus that represents such a connection. The problem becomes more complex when maximum power transfer constraints through the connection must be taken into account. The adequate slack bus treatment is even more important when the optimal operating condition must refer to the condition subsequent to an intentional or unintentional disconnection from the main grid. The paper presents an …
