Delayed neonatal visual evoked potentials are associated to asymmetric growth pattern in twins

2020

Abstract Objectives To study the association between intrauterine growth and visual pathways maturation by neonatal visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in twins, in view of a possible prognostic role. Methods Seventy-four twin neonates from 37 pregnancies were selected based on gestational age of more than 30 weeks and uneventful perinatal clinical course. Flash VEPs were recorded at the same postmenstrual age in each twin pair. The association between P2 latency and anthropometric variables at birth was analyzed by comparison within each twin pair and regarding each variable as ordered difference between the two twins. Results Analysis of differences within each twin pair highlighted that inte…

A Nomogram to Characterize the Severity of Detrusor Overactivity during the Ice Water Test: Description of the Method and Proof of Concept

2017

<b><i>Aims:</i></b> To develop a nomogram with severity categories for detrusor overactivity (DO). <b><i>Methods:</i></b> By conducting ice water tests (IWT) in 55 patients with Parkinson’s disease, we identified criteria to describe characteristics of the detrusor pressure curves: (1) a gradient of Δ<i>pdet</i> over Δt at the maximum detrusor pressure and (2) the area under the curve. In a nomogram, 10 severity categories of DO were established: 1 and 2 were assigned to group A (mild), 3 and 4 to group B (moderate) and 5–10 to group C (severe). <b><i>Results:</i></b> In the nomogram, negative IWT (20) appea…

Prediction Accuracy of a Novel Dynamic Structure-Function Model for Glaucoma Progression

2014

Purpose To assess the prediction accuracy of a novel dynamic structure-function (DSF) model to monitor glaucoma progression. Methods Longitudinal data of paired rim area (RA) and mean sensitivity (MS) from 220 eyes with ocular hypertension or primary open-angle glaucoma enrolled in the Diagnostic Innovations in Glaucoma Study or the African Descent and Glaucoma Evaluation Study were included. Rim area and MS were expressed as percent of mean normal based on an independent dataset of 91 healthy eyes. The DSF model uses centroids as estimates of the current state of the disease and velocity vectors as estimates of direction and rate of change over time. The first three visits were used to pre…

Effect of large positioning holes on capsule fixation of plate-haptic intraocular lenses

2000

Abstract Purpose To compare the centration and fixation of silicone plate-haptic intraocular lenses (IOLs) with different-sized positioning holes. Setting Eye Clinic of the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz, Mainz, Germany. Methods In a prospective randomized study, 51 Chiroflex C10 and 56 Chiroflex C11 IOLs were implanted under standardized conditions by the same surgeon. The IOL position was documented at the end of surgery and by retroillumination on the first day and 5 months postoperatively. The positioning-hole area was evaluated by ultrasound biomicroscopy (50 MHz) 5 months postoperatively. Results One day postoperatively, no IOL in either group was decentered more than 1.0 mm. Aft…

Clinical magnification and residual refraction after implantation of a double intraocular lens system in patients with macular degeneration

2007

Purpose To evaluate the efficacy of a standard double intraocular lens (IOL) system (IOL-Vip) in patients with low vision and central scotoma due to macular degeneration and assess the predictability of the residual refraction and magnification. Setting Ophthalmology Department, Hospital General Universitario, Valencia, Spain. Methods This interventional prospective noncomparative case series comprised 13 consecutive surgical procedures in 10 patients with central scotoma. Follow-up was 12 months. Evaluation included the difference between preoperative and postoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), refraction, position of the IOLs, endothelial cell density, and occurrence of postope…

Prevention of hyperopic surprise after LASIK in patients with refractive multifocal intraocular lenses.

2011

Purpose. Three cases of patients who developed a similar hyperopic defect in refraction following laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) after multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation are described. Methods. Ophthalmologic evaluation including refractive status, corrected and uncorrected visual acuity (both at far and near), and corneal topography in patients presenting similar hyperopic refractive surprise in one eye as a result of LASIK refinement of residual ametropia after refractive multifocal IOL implantation. Results. Laser in situ keratomileusis enhancement for residual ametropia of −1.00 to −1.50 D in patients with a prior implantation of refractive multifocal IOL resulted in a…

Functional assessment: Free thin anterolateral thigh flap versus free radial forearm reconstruction for hemiglossectomy defects

2015

Background To compare free thin anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap with free radial forearm (FRF) flap in the reconstruction of hemiglossectomy defects, and to introduce our methods and experience in the tongue reconstruction with free thin ALT flap. Material and Methods The clinicopathologic data of 46 tongue carcinoma cases hospitalized from December 2009 to April 2014 were obtained from Nangjing Stomatological Hospital, Medical School of Nanjing University. All the subjects were evaluated for the articulation and the swallowing function 3 months after the surgery. Results Among these 46 patients, 12 patients underwent tongue reconstruction after hemiglossectomy with ALT flap; 34 patients und…

2007

Purpose: To compare new-generation multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) with monofocal IOLs. Design: Randomized prospective clinical trial. Participants: Sixty-two consecutive patients with cataract, seen between January of 2005 and January of 2006 at the Department of Ophthalmology of Palermo University Hospital in Italy, were bilaterally implanted with monofocal (AR 40, Advanced Medical Optics [AMO], Santa Ana, CA; 15 patients), multifocal refractive (Array SA40N, AMO; 16 patients), multifocal refractive (ReZoom, AMO; 15 patients), or multifocal diffractive pupil-independent (Tecnis ZM900, AMO; 16 patients) IOLs. Intervention: Bimanual phacoemulsification. Main Outcome Measures: Primary o…

Betulinic Acid Protects from Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in the Mouse Retina

2021

Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) events are involved in the pathophysiology of numerous ocular diseases. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that betulinic acid protects from I/R injury in the mouse retina. Ocular ischemia was induced in mice by increasing intraocular pressure (IOP) to 110 mm Hg for 45 min, while the fellow eye served as a control. One group of mice received betulinic acid (50 mg/kg/day p.o. once daily) and the other group received the vehicle solution only. Eight days after the I/R event, the animals were killed and the retinal wholemounts and optic nerve cross-sections were prepared and stained with cresyl blue or toluidine blue, respectively, to count cells in…

Objective assessment of blinking and facial expressions in Parkinson’s disease using a vertical electro-oculogram and facial surface electromyography

2019

Objective: Hypomimia is a common and early symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), which reduces the ability of PD patients to manifest emotions. Currently, it is visually evaluated by the neurologist during neurological examinations for PD diagnosis, as described in task 3.2 of the Movement Disorder Society - Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS). Since such an evaluation is semi-quantitative and affected by inter-variability, this paper aims to measure the physiological parameters related to eye blink and facial expressions extracted from a vertical electro-oculogram (VEOG) and facial surface electromyography (fsEMG) to differentiate PD patients from healthy control subjects (…
