The Role of Immunohistochemistry in Rhabdomyosarcoma Diagnosis Using Tissue Microarray Technology and a Xenograft Model

2015

Rhabdomyosarcomas (RMS) may resemble other non-myogenic sarcomas and malignant rhabdoid tumor (MRT). Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) often harbors a typical translocation, but embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) lacks any specific rearrangement. Histopathology is not always sufficient for an unequivocal diagnosis, necessitating ancillary studies, including immunohistochemistry (IHC). Sixteen genetically tested RMS and two MRT were xenografted and followed in successive passages. Tissue microarrays were constructed including samples from original and xenograft tumors. Desmin, myogenin, CK, EMA, INI1, LSD1, AP2 beta, fibrillin-2, HMGA2, nestin, and SIRT1 were tested using immunohistochemical s…

Chromatic-achromatic perimetry in four clinic cases: Glaucoma and diabetes

2015

Color perimetry has interesting clinical application for the diagnosis and detection of certain eye conditions, due to the variations that certain diseases can cause in chromatic thresholds, both in the red-green (RG) and the blue-yellow (BY) pathways.[1,2,3,4] The separate study of the visual function of both the chromatic and achromatic mechanisms could be more efficient in detecting sensitivity variations, and such variations would not be obscured by the intrusion of other mechanisms. Currently, the supply of conventional perimeters that are capable of performing a chromatic perimetry test is very limited and with reduced options regarding the possibility of choosing the physical charact…

Effect of sport-tinted contact lenses for contrast enhancement on retinal straylight measurements

2008

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of two tinted contact lenses (CL) designed for outdoor sports activity on the psychometric determination of retinal straylight using the compensation comparison method. METHODS: Thirteen emmetropic subjects were randomly fitted with two different tinted Nike Maxsight (Bausch & Lomb, Rochester, NY, USA) CL in one eye, while the contralateral eye was fitted with a clear lens made of the same material (Optima 38, Bausch & Lomb). Three valid straylight measurements were taken on each eye before and a few minutes after lens insertion, when lens stabilization had occurred. RESULTS: The subjects' mean straylight values were 0.90 +/- 0.09 at baseline and 0.95 +/- …

Genetic colour variation visible for predators and conspecifics is concealed from humans in a polymorphic moth

2022

The definition of colour polymorphism is intuitive: genetic variants express discretely coloured phenotypes. This classification is, however, elusive as humans form subjective categories or ignore differences that cannot be seen by human eyes. We demonstrate an example of a 'cryptic morph' in a polymorphic wood tiger moth (Arctia plantaginis), a phenomenon that may be common among well-studied species. We used pedigree data from nearly 20,000 individuals to infer the inheritance of hindwing colouration. The evidence supports a single Mendelian locus with two alleles in males: WW and Wy produce the white and yy the yellow hindwing colour. The inheritance could not be resolved in females as t…

How pre- and post-recruitment factors shape role perceptions of European Commission officials

2017

Individuals' role perceptions are central guides to their behavior and choices as members of an organization. Understanding organizational dynamics thus requires knowledge about the determinants of such role perceptions, as well as whether—and when—organizations can influence them. This article brings forward a theoretical framework allowing for both prerecruitment (extraorganizational) and post-recruitment (intraorganizational) determinants of individuals' role perceptions, and examines its empirical implications using a large-N data set of temporary officials in the European Commission. We find that intergovernmental and epistemic role perceptions are strongly linked to pre-recruitment fa…

Effect of different bleaching protocols on whitening efficiency and enamel superficial microhardness

2018

Background Tooth bleaching is a popular aesthetic treatment to modify the color of teeth. Despite the extensive literature concerning the subject, there is still no consensus regarding the application mode of the different bleaching agents and their effect on enamel. Therefore, this study evaluated the influence of different bleaching protocols on whitening efficiency and enamel superficial hardness. Material and methods Bovine enamel fragments were embedded in acrylic resin and wet-sanded to obtain a flat buccal surface. The specimens were then randomly divided into 6 groups (n=10), based on the bleaching material [HP Maxx 35% (35% hydrogen peroxide), HP Blue 35% (35% hydrogen peroxide + C…

Cooperativity Scaling and Free Volume in Plasticized Polylactide

2019

The authors would like to thank the region Haute Normandie for their financial support and the acquisition of the Broadband Dielectric Spectrometer. R.G. acknowledges U.S. National Science Foundation (Grant no. DMR-1725188) for the acquisition of PAL spectrometer. The experimental evidence of the increase of activation energy associated with the super Arrhenius behavior governing amorphous polylactide by free volume variations has been obtained through a combination of calorimetric, dielectric, and positron annihilation lifetime measurements. The amount of free volume in polylactide was controlled by the amount of acetyltributylcitrate plasticizer in the composition. Plasticization is shown…

Axial gain resolution in optical sectioning fluorescence microscopy by shaded-ring filters.

2009

We present a new family of pupil masks to control the axial component of the intensity distribution in the focal region of tightly focused light fields. The filters, which consist of a circular clear pupil with a single shaded ring, allow to control the width of the central lobe of the axial spot together with the residual sidelobes energy. The filters can be applied to improve the optical sectioning capacity of different scanning microscopes.

Texture and Phase Recognition Analysis of beta-NaYF4 Nanocrystals

2014

Texture and phase recognition analysis (TPRA) based on electron nanodiffraction technique is used to characterize the geometry of up-conversion nanocrystals (UCNCs) synthesized by the common thermal-decomposition protocol in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of NH4F. Here, we confirmed experimentally that despite the apparently different shapes of samples (hexagons, rods, and cubes), all the nanocrystals are actually beta-phase hexagonal prisms. This is of relevance since many biological features of nanostructures, such as cellular internalization and cytotoxicity, are governed by their geometry. In addition, reproducibility in biological experiments is paramount.
