Autoimmunity and Glaucoma

2008

Elevated intraocular pressure does not explain glaucoma in all patients, but there is information that autoimmune mechanisms may be involved in this disorder. This review attempts to reveal the findings about specific changes in autoantibody profiles in glaucoma patients and their possible role in glaucoma. Considering that these changes in natural autoimmunity can be found consistently among different study populations, it might be a promising new tool for glaucoma detection.

Argon laser suture lysis following glaucoma filtering surgery – A short introduction to the procedure

Abstract Background Trabeculectomy is the most commonly performed glaucoma filtering surgery. The success of the outcome of an operation to reduce the intraocular pressure (IOP) is dependent on postoperative wound modulation by antimetabolite therapy and by flow regulation of the filtering bleb, which can be achieved by argon laser suture lysis. Methods and case report Postoperative IOP controls, examination of bleb formation and bleb massage can lead to the decision to perform up to four argon laser suture lyses in order to reduce IOP and enhance aqueous humor flow and bleb formation. SUMMARY Background: The term “glaucoma” covers a hetero geneous group of progressive optic neuropathies that are accompanied by characteristic visual-field defects. Primary open-angle glaucoma, the most common type, progresses insidiously and causes blindness if untreated. All current forms of treatment aim at lowering the intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients whose IOP is elevated. The implantation of anti-glaucoma drainage systems is one of the available options for surgical treatment. Latanoprost-induced iris darkening: a morphometric study of human peripheral iridectomies.

Abstract Purpose. This microscopic study was undertaken to compare the melanocytes of peripheral iridectomy specimens from two eyes that had latanoprost-induced iris darkening (LIID) with iridectomies taken from the fellow untreated eyes. Methods. The two patients in this study were the ones who underwent LIID in the latanoprost treated eye from a series of 17 patients requiring bilateral trabeculectomy. Implantation of a custom intraocular lens with a 30-diopter torus for the correction of high astigmatism after penetrating keratoplasty.

Abstract We present a 62-year-old woman who had implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL) with a torus of 30.0 diopters (D) in an eye after penetrating keratoplasty. The patient presented with cataract and a best corrected visual acuity of 20/400. Penetrating keratoplasty was performed in 1975 because of decompensated keratoconus. With a clear but inferiorly decentered corneal graft, visual acuity was limited because of keratoplasty-related high corneal astigmatism of 22.5@156 that could not be successfully treated with spectacles or contact lenses. Fulminant bilateral Haemophilus influenzae keratitis in a patient with hypovitaminosis A treated with contaminated autologous serum

We report on a patient with hypovitaminosis A treated with autologous serum (AS) who had bilateral infectious ulcers positive for Haemophilus influenzae. The patient suffered a perforation of his right eye and total healing of his left eye with a residual leukoma. In cases of severe malnutrition, serum levels of vitamins and bacteriostatic and growth factors are reduced, so AS would not only be ineffective but also increase the risk of secondary corneal infection. The prophylactic use of a topical antibiotic would be useful in treatment with AS, especially in patients who do not use and adequately store the eye drops, as in our patient.
