Assessment and treatment of breakthrough cancer pain in Spain: A self-audit study.
2018
e18785Background: Breakthrough cancer pain (BTcP) is a common condition, but its management may be often suboptimal. We aim to determine if physician’s perception of the management and characterist...
New insight into the genetics of age-related macular degeneration in connection with lipid metabolism
2010
Evaluation of: Zerbib J, Seddon JM, Richard F et al. rs5888 variant of SCARB1 gene is a possible susceptibility factor for age-related macular degeneration. PLoS ONE 4(10), e7341 (2009).Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of visual loss in elderly populations of Western countries. According to demographic forecasts, and owing to the improvement in life expectancy, the number of people suffering from this pathology is expected to dramatically increase in the near future, thereby becoming a significant socioeconomic burden. There has been great progress in defining risk factors for AMD over the last few decades. Beyond advanced age, environmental and genetic factors ha…
Implantation of the modified endocapsular bending ring in pediatric cataract surgery using a viscoadaptive viscoelastic agent.
1999
Cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in pediatric eyes remain controversial. Using a viscoadaptive viscoelastic agent, we implanted a modified capsular bending ring (CBR) as well as an acrylic IOL with a sharp-optic-edge design in the capsular bag. All operated eyes demonstrated a low postoperative inflammatory reaction and a clinically well-centered IOL. The band-shaped, sharp-edged CBR facilitates the creation of a sharp, discontinuous bend in the equatorial capsule, which prevents anterior and posterior capsule opacification. Combining the viscoadaptive viscoelastic agent and the CBR enhances the safety of primary and secondary posterior chamber IOL implantation in pe…
Discrimination in the sharing economy: evidence from a Hungarian field experiment
2018
Findings from our pilot research project which focused on providing car sharing services to young people with different ethnic/racial background showed discrimination against certain ethnic groups. The research was based on a controlled field experimental design to examine the chances of rides being offered to racially different testers. The experimental variables were both race and gender. Creating altogether 8 profiles enabled us to test the interaction between these two experimental stimulus. The small-scale research (total N=160) was implemented in Hungary, in summer 2017 by interns of TARKI, Hungarian Social Research Centre. The forthcoming article shows evidence of ethnic/racial dispr…
Comparison between doppler-echocardiography and uncalibrated pulse contour method for cardiac output measurement. a multicenter observational study
2016
Objectives: Echocardiography and pulse contour methods allow, respectively, noninvasive and less invasive cardiac output estimation. The aim of the present study was to compare Doppler echocardiography with the pulse contour method MostCare for cardiac output estimation in a large and nonselected critically ill population. Design: A prospective multicenter observational comparison study. Setting: The study was conducted in 15 European medicosurgical ICUs. Patients: We assessed cardiac output in 400 patients in whom an echocardiographic evaluation was performed as a routine need or for cardiocirculatory assessment. Interventions: None. Measurements and Main Results: One echocardiographic car…
Nitroglycerin-induced cardioprotection is endothelial nitric oxide synthase- dependent
2015
Purpose We sought to evaluate the contribution of the endogenous NO pathway to the cardioprotective action of nitroglycerin (NTG). Methods and Results Anesthetized rabbits were subjected to 30-min myocardial ischemia (isc) and 3-h reperfusion (rep) and randomized into: Control group (no further intervention); PostC group (application of 8 cycles 30-sec isc/rep) and NTG treated group (2 μg/kg-1/min-1 IV bolus) for 65 min starting 10 min prior to rep. In additional groups, pharmacological inhibitors of NOS, nNOS, iNOS, PI3K, adenosine receptors and PKG were administrated with or without NTG. The infarcted (I) to risk (R) ratio was estimated. In a second experimental series tissue samples were…
Ocular Comorbidities and the Relationship between Eye Diseases and Systemic Disorders
2016
Patients with ocular disorders may have additional ophthalmic problems that can have an impact on both morbidity and vision. Ocular comorbidities are commonly associated with vision-related disability and decreased quality of life related to visual impairment. The majority of studies on this topic deal with cataracts, glaucoma, uveitis, and/or retinopathies. It is important to summarize the available evidence to date on the association of one or several ocular diseases and the implications these comorbidities have on prognosis and therapy. The relationship between eye disorders and systemic diseases has recently drawn special interest. The increasing prevalence of neurodegenerative disorder…
Relationship between carotid intima-media thickness and non valvular atrial fibrillation type.
2015
OBJECTIVE: Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) is a surrogate marker of subclinical atherosclerosis and it is able to predict both coronary and cerebral vascular events. No data exist on the association between cIMT and non valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) type. We conduct this study with the aim to analyze the association between abnormal cIMT and NVAF type. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of the "Atrial fibrillation Registry for Ankle-brachial index Prevalence Assessment-Collaborative Italian Study (ARAPACIS)" has been performed. Among 2027 patients enrolled in the ARAPACIS, 673 patients, who underwent carotid ultrasound examination to assess cIMT, were included in the study. RESULT…
Low Carbohydrate Diet (SCD/GAPS) for Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder
2019
Objective of the study was to investigate the potential of low carbohydrate diet (SCD/ and supplements in reducing some autistic spectrum disorder ASD symptoms in children.
