Collaborative Virtual Reality for Laparoscopic Liver Surgery Training

Virtual reality (VR) has been used in many medical training systems for surgical procedures. However, the current systems are limited due to inadequate interactions, restricted possibilities of patient data visualization, and collaboration. We propose a collaborative VR system for laparoscopic liver surgical planning and simulation. Medical image data is used for model visualization and manipulation. Additionally, laparoscopic surgical joysticks are used to provide an opportunity for a camera assistant to cooperate with an experienced surgeon in VR. The decrease of density and consequentially optical density of macular pigment serves as a diagnostic mean for a number of ophthalmological pathologies, particularly as a risk factor for age related macular degeneration. Abstract Lutein and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are associated with the prevention of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Since microalgae are potent natural sources of these nutrients, their nutritional value should be evaluated based on the bioavailability of lutein and DHA for the retina via the plasmatic compartment. In this study, quail were fed for 5 months either with a diet supplemented or deprived with microalgae rich in lutein and DHA. In the microalgae-fed group, the retinal concentrations of lutein and zeaxanthin gradually increased whereas in plasma, these compounds started to increase from the first month of supplementation. Xanthophylls are dietary lipophilic compounds. Among them, lutein and zeaxanthin are the major carotenoids found in the human lens and retina, and referred as macular pigment within the retina. Lutein and zeaxanthin cannot be synthesized endogenously. They may therefore be considered as essential and must be provided by adequate dietary intakes. Xanthophylls, also known as carotenoids are a group of natural fat-soluble pigments that are especially abundant in green and yellow-orange fruits and vegetables. Based on epidemiologic data, it is now evident that carotenoids provide health benefits and particularly in eye diseases. Molecular characterization of retinal carotenoids has shown that there were actually two xanthophylls that are concentrated in macular region, namely lutein and zeaxanthin. Flavor release from food emulsions varying in their composition in fat and proteins and its effect on flavor perception

International audience; Model food emulsions were produced with two different types of fat and two batches of proteins. Aroma release of three compounds was studied by solid-phase microextraction in function of the temperature, in parallel with time intensity evaluation of the fruity perception. Time intensity showed that partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil instead of anhydrous milk fat led to a higher intensity and longer duration of the fruity perception. Furthermore, an effect of the nature of protein was observed only with partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil. This is an original manuscript / preprint of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Applied Economics Letters on 2019, available online: https://doi.org/10.1080/13504851.2018.1545076 This letter assesses the impact of the Great Recession on well-being in Spanish provinces using two alternative composite indicators of objective well-being that include somewhat different dimensions. Whereas the crisis notably eroded economic well-being, its impact on overall well-being – which in addition to economic dimensions also includes non-economic ones – was imperceptible. This result points to the need to carefully define and assess well-being in empirical analyses.

Rotational Correlation Functions of Single Molecules
2004
Single molecule rotational correlation functions are analyzed for several reorientation geometries. Even for the simplest model of isotropic rotational diffusion our findings predict non-exponential correlation functions to be observed by polarization sensitive single molecule fluorescence microscopy. This may have a deep impact on interpreting the results of molecular reorientation measurements in heterogeneous environments.
