Sex-specific selection on energy metabolism - selection coefficients for winter survival

2010

Selection for different fitness optima between sexes is supposed to operate on several traits. As fitness-related traits are often energetically costly, selection should also act directly on the energetics of individuals. However, efforts to examine the relationship between fitness and components of the energy budget are surprisingly scarce. We investigated the effects of basal metabolic rate (BMR, the minimum energy required for basic life functions) and body condition on long-term survival (8 winter months) with manipulated densities in enclosed populations of bank voles (Myodes glareolus). Here, we show that survival selection on BMR was clearly sex-specific but density-independent. Both…

Personality and musical preference using social-tagging in excerpt-selection.

2017

Music preference has been related to individual differences like social identity, cognitive style, and personality, but quantifying music preference can be a challenge. Self-report measures may be too presumptive of shared genre definitions between listeners, while listener ratings of expert-selected music may fail to reflect typical listeners’ genre boundaries. The current study aims to address this by using a social-tagging approach to select music for studying preference. In this study, 2,407 tracks were collected and subsampled from the Last.fm social-tagging service and the EchoNest platform based on attributes such as genre, tempo, and danceability. The set was further subsampled acco…

A C1-inhibitor rare mutation: Early diagnosis of hereditary angioedema in a paediatric patient

2013

Hereditary angioedema secondary to C1-inhibitor deficiency is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by a deficiency of C1 esterase inhibitor. An eight-year-old girl showed periorbital painless swelling, diagnosed as ethmoiditis. A craniofacial scan did not evidence a paranasal sinus involvement, C1INH levels were undetectable, with low C4 levels: 7.6 mg/dl and C1INH: <8.46 mg/dl. The genetic study identified a rare mutation of the C1INH gene. This clinical report is of relieve because paediatric cases described in literature are rare, did not presented a positive family history, and received a diagnosis after many attacks. Furthermore our girl received a prompt diagnosis of HAE at…

Evidence-based medicine and the problem of healthy volunteers

2017

Abstract Healthy controls are subjects without the disease being studied but may have other conditions indirectly affecting outcome. In the present epidemics of obesity a few subjects with undiagnosed nonalcoholic fatty liver disease enter clinical studies as controls, producing biased results. Stricter selection criteria should be considered to prevent this risk.

Mobilization of short-term memory capacity for odors in discriminative tests: implication for assessors' selection

2004

Abstract The objective was to determine whether individual short-term memory capacities for odor are related to performance at discriminative tests. Two groups of 11 subjects were formed with different short-term memory for odor but equivalent sensitivity toward benzaldehyde, the aromatic compound to be detected in discriminative tests. The subject sensitivity was determined by d ′ values, derived from a detection task. Memory span for odors was the largest number of odors memorized at once. It ranged from 1 to 3 for the low memory span group and from 5 to 7 for the high memory span group. Then, subjects performed 20 triangle tests and 12 2-out-of-5 tests with two strawberry flavored soft d…
