Translation als Mythos

2020

Abstract This paper investigates the reception history of the Danish Poet and fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen in 19th-century Germany and its influence on his (auto)biographical depiction. Like many Scandinavian poets, Andersen discovered Germany’s literary potential and took advantage of it to further his career. In most cases, he was pictured as a genius who suffered systematic underestimation in Denmark. This narrative which determined his reception plays a central role in his German autobiography Märchen meines Lebens (Fairy Tale of my Life). Analyzing Andersen’s autobiographical discourse, I will reconstruct the process of the construction of Andersen’s (auto)biographical myth…

Einstein and Relativity: What Price Fame?

2012

ArgumentEinstein's initial fame came in late 1919 with a dramatic breakthrough in his general theory of relativity. Through a remarkable confluence of events and circumstances, the mass media soon projected an image of the photogenic physicist as a bold new revolutionary thinker. With his theory of relativity Einstein had overthrown outworn ideas about space and time dating back to Newton's day, no small feat. While downplaying his reputation as a revolutionary, Einstein proved he was well cast for the role of mild-mannered scientific genius. Yet fame demanded its price. Surrounded by social and economic unrest in Berlin, he was caught between two worlds, one struggling to be born, another …

Mammoth remains from the Opole area, southwest Poland

2016

Isolated skeletal remains of woolly mammoths, found in the Opole region, are described and illustrated. Most of these were recovered in the first half of the twentieth century; they are now deposited in several museum collections but have not yet been described in detail, nor illustrated. Recent discoveries in the area were the prime trigger for the present review of previously collected material. A summary of current knowledge of all finds of mammoth remains from the Opole area is the main aim of this note, inclusive of a brief history of research. In addition, a single radiocarbon dating has been performed. All skeletal elements, i.e., molars, pelvis, femur, scapula, jaw, tusks and cement…

More Than Meets the Eye: Toward a Post-Materialist Model of Consciousness.

2015

Commonly accepted models of human consciousness have substantial shortcomings, in the sense that they cannot account for the entire scope of human experiences. The goal of this article is to describe a model with higher explanatory power, by integrating ideas from psychology and quantum mechanics. In the first part, the need for a paradigm change will be justified by presenting three types of phenomena that challenge the materialistic view of consciousness. The second part is about proposing an alternative view of reality and mind–matter manifestation that is able to accommodate these phenomena. Finally, the ideas from the previous parts will be combined with the psychological concepts deve…

Design e Artigianato in Sicilia. Scambio e contaminazione tra forme diverse della progettualità.

2023

While travelling on the fast tracks of the digital world, our age has long understood the importance of promoting cultural heritage. In this context, the intangible heritage that is made up of the baggage of knowledge related to artisanal know-how represents the foundation of the determination of territorial identities. The School of Design of the University of Palermo was among the first to embrace the idea of using design as a tool to safeguard and evolve the skills of craftsmanship: in the words of Anna Maria Fundarò, founder in 1981 of the Industrial Design Institute of Palermo, the identity of Sicilian design is engraved in the DNA of a discipline whose meaning "is linked to our local …

Sabina Era, 天才基因座和平面设计 / Sabina Era, genius loci and graphic design

2010

By the coming of the International Style many people reflected upon the positive strength of architecture and carried out that design, which – by following accurate principles – could be repeatable in any place; new architectures rose among the others, and they were provided with big glass surfaces, even though the sun would have heated them up, w…

Karta z kalendarza, czyli wspomnienie o Gdyni

2022

On September 23, 1922, the Legislative Sejm of the Republic of Poland passed an act on the creation of the port in Gdynia. The resolution was a confirmation of the will of the Polish nation, which, although in the Treaty of Versailles, received access to the Baltic Sea, but without a port, which was necessary for the development of the state. Bearing in mind this important and round anniversary, the authors of the article decided to recall the most important circumstances and figures related to the construction of the port and the city of Gdynia. The article contains a historical outline of Gdynia, reminding that the first historical mention of it dates back to 1253. However, a lot of space…
