A multi-model assessment of the impact of sea spray geoengineering on cloud droplet number

Artificially increasing the albedo of marine boundary layer clouds by the mechanical emission of sea spray aerosol has been proposed as a geoengineering technique to slow the warming caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gases. A previous global model study (Korhonen et al., 2010) found that only modest increases (< 20%) and sometimes even decreases in cloud drop number (CDN) concentrations would result from emission scenarios calculated using a windspeed dependent geoengineering flux parameterisation. Temporally delineated sources of major chemical species in high Arctic snow

Long-range transport of aerosol from lower latitudes to the high Arctic may be a significant contributor to climate forcing in the Arctic. To identify the sources of key contaminants entering the Canadian High Arctic an intensive campaign of snow sampling was completed at Alert, Nunavut, from September 2014 to June 2015. Widespread persistent polar stratospheric ice clouds in the Arctic

Despite a general decline in ozone depleting substances in the stratosphere due to the multi-national commitment to substantially reduce the emissions of their precursors, the magnitude of Arctic polar ozone loss has not decreased in recent years. Thus new observations at cold conditions can help to enhance our knowledge of polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) formation and life cycle which is of relevance for Arctic ozone loss. Techniques for the modelling of the process systems in slow and fast-moving landslides

This chapter reviews some of the current strategies for landslide modelling. Main physical processes in landslides are first recalled. Numerical tools are then introduced for the analysis of the behaviour of slow- and fast-moving landslides. Representative case studies are introduced through the chapter to highlight how different modelling strategies can be used depending on the physical processes that the modeller wants to take into account.
