First record of the vulnerable social parasite ant Plagiolepis grassei in Italy (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

2017

The first Italian records of the rare parasitic ant species Plagiolepis grassei Le Masne, 1956 are here reported. This species is considered as “Vulnerable” by the IUCN’s Red List, and was previously recorded from France and Spain only.

Biological traits, geographic distributions, and species conservation in aquatic ecosystems

2022

Aquatic ecosystems (both marine and freshwater) have long served as model systems for exploring the role of environmental stressors on organismal performance and survival, the biogeographic distributions of populations and species, and ultimately the diversity, functioning, and stability of ecosystems (Adams, 2002; Forbes, 1887; MacArthur & Wilson, 2001; Paine, 1969; Somero et al., 2017 ). Climate change, alien species invasions, land use change, urbaniza-tion, and other anthropogenic impacts have all been demonstrated to impair aquatic ecosystems at multiple levels of biological orga-nization within aquatic ecosystems (Karr, 1991; Doney et al., 2012; Harley et al., 2006; Poloczanska et…

Benthic hydroids from the south of Livingston Island (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) collected by the Spanish Antarctic expedition Bentart 94

2006

Twenty-five species of benthic hydroids were collected during the Spanish Antarctic expedition Bentart 94 from the south of Livingston Island (Antarctica). All species are considered regarding autecology and geographical distribution. The systematic position amongst allied species is discussed when considered necessary. Antarctoscyphus asymmetricus and Symplectoscyphus nesioticus are reported for the second and the third time, respectively.

La rajola a la costa i els residus a l’interior. Mapa dels conflictes socioecològics al País Valencià

2020

EnglishIn the last decade, the Valencian Country has experimented a growth of the productive processes that has led to an unprecedented degradation of the territory. At the same time, the increase in the ecological, material and carbon footprint has led to the generation of socio-ecological conflicts. A typology of socio-ecological conflicts is proposed, consisting of 5 categories —derived from urban processes, infrastructures, pollution and public health, the extraction of mineral resources and the use of water resources—, which classifies and places them on the 'map of the socio-ecological conflicts of the Valencia Country'. The map locates such environmental conflicts. Furthermore, the u…

Temperature effects explain continental scale distribution of cyanobacterial toxins

2018

Insight into how environmental change determines the production and distribution of cyanobacterial toxins is necessary for risk assessment. Management guidelines currently focus on hepatotoxins (microcystins). Increasing attention is given to other classes, such as neurotoxins (e.g., anatoxin-a) and cytotoxins (e.g., cylindrospermopsin) due to their potency. Most studies examine the relationship between individual toxin variants and environmental factors, such as nutrients, temperature and light. In summer 2015, we collected samples across Europe to investigate the effect of nutrient and temperature gradients on the variability of toxin production at a continental scale. Direct and indirect…
