Bio-Eco-Analysis for Risk Factors using GIS Software

2013

Agriculture is a business sector ideally suited for the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) because it is natural resource based, requires the movement, distribution, and/or utilization of large quantities of products, goods, and services, and is increasingly required to record details of its business operations from the field to the marketplace. Nearly all agricultural data has some form of spatial component, and a GIS allows you to visualize information that might otherwise be difficult to interpret. Environment has a major impact on agriculture. In this paper we presented how GIS software can be used to analyze risk factors that influence agricultural production naturally…

Informational analysis of forest landscape spatial heterogeneity

1999

Summary Under the perspective of forest ecosystem management, landscape is interpreted as a functioning structure. From an inventory and monitoring operational point of view, such an approach implies wise use of geographic information systems and remote sensing techniques enabling a global view of the territorial mosaic. From a methodological point of view, landscape ecology theory may be used as the assessment framework. Remotely sensed data provide excellent opportunities for the involved analyses, using both vegetation density measures and spatial statistics. The objective of this paper was to assess landscape spatial heterogeneity using an analysis method based on Shannon's information …

Wind speed spatial estimation for energy planning in Sicily: A neural kriging application

2008

Abstract One of the first steps for the exploitation of any energy source is necessarily represented by its estimation and mapping at the aim of identifying the most suitable areas in terms of energy potential. In the field of renewable energies this is often a very difficult task, because the energy source is in this case characterized by relevant variations over space and time. This implies that any temporal, but also spatial, estimation model has to be able to incorporate this spatial and temporal variability. The paper deals with the spatial estimation of the wind fields in Sicily (Italy) by following a data-driven approach. Starting from the results of a preliminary study, a novel tech…

Proposal of a Geographic Information System for modeling zoonotic fasciolosis transmission in the Andes

2004

ABSTRACT The present study describes the basis for the development of a Geographic Information System(GIS) for conducting an epidemiological analysis of human and animal fasciolosis in the Andes. Themethodology proposes the use of various data bases - those derived from epidemiologicalmutidisciplinary studies and environmental data derived from terrestrial stations and remote sensing. Key words : Fasciola hepatica, fasciolosis transmission, Andes, geographic information system, model. INTRODUCTIONOver the last decade, the importance of humanand animal fasciolosis in various south Americancountries has been emphasized in the scientificliterature 1-5 ; indeed, human infection by Fasciolahepati…

Effect of Local Geology on Ground Motion in the City of Palermo, Italy, as Inferred from Aftershocks of the 6 September 2002 Mw 5.9 Earthquake

2005

On 6 September 2002 a M w 5.9 earthquake occurred in the southern Tyrrhenian sea, 40 km off the coast of Palermo (Italy). In the days after the mainshock, eight temporary stations were installed in the city to record aftershocks on different geological formations. Seismograms of about 30 earthquakes with magnitude ≥2.8 are analyzed. The data analysis confirms the role of near-surface geology in causing locally significant variations of the ground-shaking level as already inferred by Guidoboni et al. (2003) from historical damage scenario studies. The largest spectral variations estimated through aftershock recordings result in a factor of 10 difference between stiff and soft sites, in frequ…

Visualization of the Renewable Energy Resources

2016

The methods of the renewable energy resources visualization are analysed in this work, the examples of the systems and possible architecture of the renewable energy monitoring systems of the Republic of Kazakhstan are considered. Successful practices are analysed, the leading scientific organization in the field of green energy are considered, a comparative analysis of geographic information systems and data sources in the field of green energy is performed. Possible software architecture of the system based on 3M paradigm of geographic information system (multilayer views, multilayer architecture and multi-agent interaction) is considered.

The GIS Platform and the Spatial Analyses

2019

Spatial analyses, carried out using a GIS (Geographic Information System) platform, investigated the relationship between different environments (from the coast to the highlands) and human settlement and mobility strategies, in a diachronic perspective. Mobility strategies of the last hunter-gatherers in Sicily, the origin and first development of husbandry, the debated question about territorial relationships between indigenous people and Greek colonists, the birth of an articulated territorial exploitation system in Medieval times are some of the main topics discussed in this chapter.

Characterization of a fractured basement reservoir using high-resolution 3D seismic and logging datasets: A case study of the Sab'atayn Basin, Yemen.

2018

The Sab'atayn Basin is one of the most prolific Mesozoic hydrocarbon basins located in central Yemen. It has many oil producing fields including the Habban Field with oil occurrences in fractured basement rocks. A comprehensive seismic analysis of fractured basement reservoirs was performed to identify the structural pattern and mechanism of hydrocarbon entrapment and reservoir characteristics. A 3D post-stack time migration seismic cube and logging data of 20 wells were used and several 2D seismic sections were constructed and interpreted. Depth structure maps were generated for the basement reservoir and overlying formations. The top of the basement reservoir is dissected by a set of NW-S…

Spatial analysis of the relationship between mortality from cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease and drinking water hardness

2004

Journal Article; Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't; Reproduced with permission from Environmental Health Perspectives. Previously published scientific papers have reported a negative correlation between drinking water hardness and cardiovascular mortality. Some ecologic and case-control studies suggest the protective effect of calcium and magnesium concentration in drinking water. In this article we present an analysis of this protective relationship in 538 municipalities of Comunidad Valenciana (Spain) from 1991-1998. We used the Spanish version of the Rapid Inquiry Facility (RIF) developed under the European Environment and Health Information System (EUROHEIS) research project. The strateg…
