A survey on geometrical reconstruction as a core technology to sketch-based modeling

2005

In this work, the background and evolution of three-dimensional reconstruction of line drawings during the last 30 years is discussed. A new general taxonomy is proposed to make apparent and discuss the historical evolution of geometrical reconstruction and their challenges. The evolution of geometrical reconstruction from recovering know-how stored in engineering drawings to sketch-based modeling for helping in the first steps of conceptual design purposes, and the current challenges of geometrical reconstruction are discussed too.

On the thermo-mechanical behaviour of DEMO water-cooled lithium lead equatorial outboard blanket module

2017

Abstract Within the framework of EUROfusion R&D activities an intense research campaign has been carried out at the University of Palermo, in close cooperation with ENEA Brasimone, in order to investigate the thermo-mechanical performances of the DEMO water-cooled lithium lead breeding blanket (WCLL). In particular, attention has been paid to the most recent geometric configuration of the DEMO WCLL outboard equatorial module, as designed by WCLL project team during 2015, endowed with an attachment system based on the use of radial pins, purposely outlined to connect the module back-plate to its back-supporting structure, that have been properly considered to simulate more realistically the …

Estimation of Passenger Car Equivalents for Two-Lane and Turbo Roundabouts Using AIMSUN

2020

The paper addresses issues related to Passenger Car Equivalents (PCEs) at roundabouts. Compared to other road units, the curvilinear elements of roundabout geometric design may impose greater constraints on vehicular trajectories and have a significant effect on the swept envelope of heavy vehicles. Specifically, the aim of the paper is to present the methodological approach which used traffic microsimulation to estimate PCEs. Focus is made on a case study which considered the conversion of a two-lane roundabout into a basic turbo roundabout with comparable size. Empirical capacity functions for both roundabouts were derived as target values to which simulated capacities by lane were compar…

Geometric Algebra Rotors for Sub-symbolic Coding of Natural Language Sentences

2007

A sub-symbolic encoding methodology for natural language sentences is presented. The procedure is based on the creation of an LSA-inspired semantic space and associates rotation operators derived from Geometric Algebra to word bigrams of the sentence. The operators are subsequently applied to an orthonormal standard basis of the created semantic space according to the order in which words appear in the sentence. The final rotated basis is then coded as a vector and its orthogonal part constitutes the sub-symbolic coding of the sentence. Preliminary experimental results for a classification task, compared with the traditional LSA methodology, show the effectiveness of the approach.

Gaze Parameters in the Analysis of Ambiguous Geometric Shapes.

2021

This study explores perceptual organisation and shape perception when viewing a tetragon and an additional element (a dot) that is located at varying positions and distances next to the tetragon. The aim of the study is to determine the factors that can alter the interpretation of object configuration and impact whether the presented tetragon is perceived as a diamond or a square. Methods used in this study are a forced-choice task as a subjective measurement and eye tracking as an objective measurement of perceptual processes. Overall, 31 stimuli were presented to the participants: a tetragon in two different sizes with an additional element (a dot) located inside or outside the object at…

Subpixel determination of imperfect circles characteristics

2008

This article deals with the problem of the determination of characteristics of imperfect circular objects in discrete images, namely the radius and center coordinates. To limit distortion, a multi-level method based on active contours was developed. Its originality is to furnish a set of geometric envelopes in one pass, with a correspondence between grayscale and a regularity scale. The adequacy of this approach was tested with several methods, among them is the Radon-based method. More particularly, this study indicates the relevance of the use of active contours combined with a Radon transform-based method which was improved using a fitting considering the discrete implementation of the R…

Mixed-aspect fractal surfaces

2013

In order to provide accurate tools to model original surfaces in a Computer Aided Geometric Design context, we develop a formalism based on iterated function systems. This model enables us to represent both smooth and fractal free-form curves and surfaces. But, because of the self-similarity property underlying the iterated function systems, curves and surfaces can only have homogeneous roughness. The aim of our work was to elaborate a method to build parametric shapes (curves, surfaces, ...) with a non-uniform local aspect: every point is assigned a ''geometric texture'' that evolves continuously from a smooth to a rough aspect. The principle is to blend shapes with uniform aspects to defi…

Conjugacy problem for braid groups and Garside groups

2003

We present a new algorithm to solve the conjugacy problem in Artin braid groups, which is faster than the one presented by Birman, Ko and Lee. This algorithm can be applied not only to braid groups, but to all Garside groups (which include finite type Artin groups and torus knot groups among others).

New Geometric Constraint Solving Formulation: Application to the 3D Pentahedron

2014

Geometric Constraint Solving Problems (GCSP) are nowadays routinely investigated in geometric modeling. The 3D Pentahedron problem is a GCSP defined by the lengths of its edges and the planarity of its quadrilateral faces, yielding to an under-constrained system of twelve equations in eighteen unknowns. In this work, we focus on solving the 3D Pentahedron problem in a more robust and efficient way, through a new formulation that reduces the underlying algebraic formulation to a well-constrained system of three equations in three unknowns, and avoids at the same time the use of placement rules that resolve the under-constrained original formulation. We show that geometric constraints can be …

Solution isolation strategies for the Bernstein polytopes-based solver

2013

The Bernstein polytopes-based solver is a new method developed to solve systems of nonlinear equations, which often occur in Geometric Constraint Solving Problems. The principle of this solver is to linearize nonlinear monomials and then to solve the resulting linear programming problems, through linear programming. However, without any strategy for the isolation of the many solutions of multiple-solution systems, this solver is slow in practice. To overcome this problem, we propose in this work, a study of several strategies for solution isolation, through the split of solution boxes into several subboxes, according to three main steps answering the questions: when, where, and how to perfo…
