The effects of drip rate and geometry on the isotopic composition of speleothems: Evaluation with an advection-diffusion-reaction model

2022

Abstract The curvature and slope of speleothem surfaces have been shown to affect the reaction rates in the aqueous carbonate system by altering the thickness of the CaCO3-precipitating solution. However, the effects of speleothem geometry and drip rate on the speleothem’s carbon and oxygen isotopic composition have yet to be investigated. Over more strongly sloping surfaces, solutions are thinner and flow faster. The effects of thinner and faster-flowing solutions on the isotopic composition of carbonate minerals precipitated from these solutions are of opposite sense. Thinner solutions enhance rates of CO2 degassing and mineral formation, increasing the degree of isotopic distillation of …

Successful closure of the root apex in non-vital permanent incisors with wide open apices using single calcium hydroxide (caoh) dressing: report of 2…

2010

Endodontic management of immature non vital permanent teeth in young pediatric patients is a great challenge to dentists. The walls of the root canals are frequently divergent and open apexes make debridement and obturation difficult. Thus closure of root apex is very essential for success of the endodontic treatment. Although different materials are used for the apexification procedure, calcium hydroxide is the material of choice for apical barrier formation and healing. There are different opinions regarding frequency of CaOH dressing change to induce complete closure of the apex. Literature suggests that dressing should be changed frequently. Therefore the aim of the present article is t…

On Finite Translation Structures with Proper Dilatations

1986

Recently, Biliotti and the author obtained a certain number of results on translation structures with proper dilatations including structure-and characterisation-theorems, which here will be reformulated in a different manner, throwing a new light on some of the regarded questions.

An Analysis of the Presence and Composition of OutLists at United States, Canadian, and European Medical Institutions

2019

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) medical students and physicians are exposed to bias in professional contexts. One strategy for promoting SGM visibility and inclusion within medicine is the development of institutional OutLists, which are online, opt-in lists of SGM-identified individuals affiliated with an academic institution. We present the first quantitative evaluation of publicly accessible OutLists at medical institutions in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Nineteen OutLists were identified in the United States; no OutLists were identified in other countries. All OutLists in the United States were identified at allopathic institutions with no institutional religious affiliation.…

Anomalous size-dependence of interfacial profiles between coexisting phases of polymer mixtures in thin-film geometry: A Monte Carlo simulation

1997

The interfacial profile between coexisting phases of a binary mixture (A,B) in a thin film of thickness D and lateral linear dimensions L depends sensitively on both linear dimensions and on the nature of boundary conditions and statistical ensembles applied. These phenomena generic for systems in confined geometry are demonstrated by Monte-Carlo simulations of the bond fluctuation model of symmetric polymer mixtures. Both the canonical and semi-grand-canonical ensemble are studied. In the canonical ensemble, the interfacial width w increases (from small values which are of the same order as the intrinsic profile) like sqrt{D}, before a crossover to a saturation value w_max (w_max^2 proport…

Influence of row orientation on the canopy temperature of Sicilian vineyards

2021

Row orientation can have significant effects on grape quality as it directly affects the exposure of the fruits with indirect consequences on wine quality. In this study, a Flir i7 thermal camera was used to measure the temperature of both canopy sides of a ‘Sauvignon blanc’ vineyard trained to vertical shoot position and with north-south (NS) and east-west (EW) row orientations. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) measurements using a 0.8-m sensor bar were taken along with the thermal imaging camera measurements. Considering both row orientations, south and east canopy sides were those that intercepted the greatest radiant energy during the day, 57.7 and 47.5%, respectively. The EW r…

Laboratory Measurements of Flow and Turbulence in Discontinuous Distributions of Ligulate Seagrass

2007

Turbulent flow characteristics were investigated in laboratory flume studies of a ligulate plant canopy interrupted by a gap representing discontinuities observed in seagrass prairies. The reliability of velocity measurements obtained using an acoustic Doppler velocimeter within the canopy was shown using specifically designed experiments. In relatively fast flow (mean velocity 5.5 cm s−1), the mean flow profile was logarithmic above the canopy, had an inflection point near its top, and uniformly low values within it. Within the gap, a recirculation cell formed. Reynolds stress maxima were approximately coincident with the mean flow inflection point. Quadrant analysis revealed an ejection-d…

IFS attractors and Cantor sets

2006

Abstract We build a metric space which is homeomorphic to a Cantor set but cannot be realized as the attractor of an iterated function system. We give also an example of a Cantor set K in R 3 such that every homeomorphism f of R 3 which preserves K coincides with the identity on K.

Phase diagram of polymer blends in confined geometry

2001

Within self-consistent field theory we study the phase behavior of a symmetrical binary AB polymer blend confined into a thin film. The film surfaces interact with the monomers via short range potentials. One surface attracts the A component and the corresponding smei-infinite system exhibits a first order wetting transition. The surface interaction of the opposite surface is varied as to study the crossover from capillary condensation for symmetric surfaces fields to the interface localization/delocalization transition for antisymmetric surface fields. In the former case the phase diagram has a single critical point close to the bulk critical point. In the latter case the phase diagram exh…

Substituent effect of nitro group on aromaticity of carbazole rings

2014

The molecular geometries of carbazole and its 17 nitro derivatives were optimized at the B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) level of theory. The harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity and nucleus-independent chemical shift descriptors of π-electron delocalization were calculated to estimate the aromaticity of the carbazole five- and six-membered rings. The biggest changes in the value of both descriptors were observed for the pyrrole ring. The nitro group attached to 3 and/or 6 positions of the carbazole ring system exerts only a slight influence on the benzene ring aromaticity.
