Data Compression Approach for Long-Term Monitoring of Pavement Structures

Pavement structures are designed to withstand continuous damage during their design life. Damage starts as soon as the pavement is open to traffic and increases with time. If maintenance activities are not considered in the initial design or considered but not applied during the service life, damage will grow to a point where rehabilitation may be the only and most expensive option left. An overview of the geochemical characteristics of oceanic carbonatites: New insights from Fuerteventura carbonatites (Canary islands)

The occurrence of carbonatites in oceanic settings is very rare if compared with their continental counterpart, having been reported only in Cape Verde and Canary Islands. This paper provides an overview of the main geochemical characteristics of oceanic carbonatites, around which many debates still exist regarding their petrogenesis. We present new data on trace elements in minerals and whole-rock, together with the first noble gases isotopic study (He, Ne, Ar) in apatite, calcite, and clinopyroxene from Fuerteventura carbonatites (Canary Islands). Evidence of low land surface thermal infrared emissivity in the presence of dry vegetation

International audience; Land surface emissivity in the thermal infrared usually increases when the vegetation amount increases, reaching values that are larger than 0.98. During an experiment in Morocco over dry barley crops, it was found that emissivity may be significantly lower than 0.98 at full cover and that in some situations, it might decrease with increasing amount of vegetation, which was unexpected. Older data acquired in Barrax, Spain, over senescent barley also exhibited emissivity values lower than 0.98. Boundary elements analysis of adhesively bonded piezoelectric active repair

Abstract This paper presents the analysis of active piezoelectric patches for cracked structures by the boundary element method. A two-dimensional boundary integral formulation based on the multidomain technique is used to model cracks and to assemble the multi-layered piezoelectric patches to the host damaged structures. The fracture mechanics behavior of the repaired structures is analyzed for both perfect and imperfect interface between patches and host beams. Field testing parameter sensitivity of the two-term infiltration equation using differentiated linearization

Knowledge of soil hydraulic conductivity in the vadose zone is important in many agronomic, engineering and environmental areas. Transient tension infiltrometer experiments can be used to estimate the hydraulic conductivity, K0, corresponding to a given pressure head by the single-test (TST) method that uses the coefficients C1 and C2 of the two-term infiltration equation. The “Differentiated Linearization” (DL) method has been proposed to estimate these coefficients when a layer of contact material is used for the experiment. Centrifuge tests on strip footings on sand with a weak layer

Tests on small-scale physical models of a strip footing resting on a dense sand bed containing a thin horizontal weak soil layer were carried out at normal gravity (1 g ). The results, reported in a companion paper, point out that the weak layer plays an important role in the failure mechanism and the ultimate bearing capacity of the footing if it falls within the ground volume relevant to the behaviour of the sand–footing system. Mimicking shear zones: An example from Wadi Filk, Jordan

Abstract Ductile shear zones can develop in at least two ways: (1) a nucleus can grow laterally by free propagation into undeformed host rock, like most faults or joints; (2) the zone may nucleate and grow on or in a planar discontinuity and mimick its orientation. Most small-scale ductile shear zones are mimicking zones, but large-scale ductile shear zones could be free-propagating. The Wadi Filk mylonite zone in Jordan is a two km long, ten meter wide mylonite zone flanked by ultramylonite zones, developed in undeformed Neoproterozoic porphyritic monzogranite. This paper addresses monoharmonic vibration attenuation using piezoelectric transducers shunted with electric impedances consisting of a resistance and an inductance in series.
