Physical inactivity and pain in older men and women with hip fracture history

Hip fracture patients often suffer from pain for several months after surgery. This may lead to physical inactivity and subsequent mobility limitation and disability. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between severe musculoskeletal pain and the level of physical activity in older people with a history of hip fracture. Data were collected from 60- to 85-year-old (n = 78) community-dwelling people, 0.7–7.5 years after hip fracture. Physical activity was assessed with the Yale Physical Activity Survey (YPAS). Does the longevity of one or both parents influence the health status of their offspring?

According to the findings of some recent studies, the centenarians' offspring appear to represent a promising model for research on longevity and healthy aging. This study compares the health status and the functional status of three groups of subjects: 1. individuals with two long-lived parents (one of whom centenarian), 2. individuals with only one long-lived (centenarian) parent, and 3. individuals with no long-lived parents. Impact of recommendations on the initial therapy of Parkinson’s disease: A population-based study in France

International audience; Levodopa induces long-term motor complications in Parkinson's disease (PD). Therapeutic strategies that prevent motor complications are needed. Our aim was to evaluate the impact of recommendations of a French consensus conference published in 2000 on initial PD therapy. We identified 308 PD patients as part of a population-based study performed within the Mutualité Sociale Agricole in five French districts (2007). Neurologists confirmed PD diagnosis. Identification of the novel D297fsX318 PINK1 mutation and phenotype variation in a family with early-onset Parkinson's disease

Herein we first describe a novel homozygous single nucleotide deletion in PINK1 exon 4 (889delG) which results in a loss of kinase domain on the PINK1 protein (D297fsX318). This mutation was identified in two brothers with early-onset Parkinson disease (EOPD) from a Sicilian consanguineous family. Of note, while one of the two patients developed mental deterioration and psychiatric problems, the other showed no cognitive decline. The present study supports the view that PINK1 is a pathogenic gene in some Italian families with EOPD and contributes to define the PINK1-associated phenotype.
