L’agiografia è un potente veicolo di propaganda e i testi agiografici medievali forniscono una chiave di lettura anche riguardo ai temi dell’etnia e dell’identità dei popoli germanici. Per quanto riguarda il mondo germanico riveste particolare rilievo il culto di quei santi che appaiono più strettamente legati alle formazioni politiche che vanno emergendo in Europa occidentale. Si tratta di culti sostenuti dalle autorità non solo ecclesiastiche ma anche e soprattutto civili, dai sovrani e dai loro entourage. Abstract The chemical composition of essential oils of six Stachys species, S. cretica L. ssp. vacillans Rech. fil., S. germanica L., S. hydrophila Boiss., S. nivea Labill., S. palustris L. and S. spinosa L., obtained by hydrodistillation, was studied by GC and GC–MS. All the oils have in common a great percentage of fatty acids and esters (24.2–58.5%) and a high amount of sesquiterpenes (16–35.9%), with the exception of the oil from S. palustris , which consisted mainly of carbonylic compounds (25.4%). ‘The Glossary in ms. Cambridge, St John’s College E.17 and Middle English Lexicography’,

The only bilingual item of MS Cambridge, St John’s College, E.17 is a short glossary with French lemmata and English interpretamenta, copied in the upper part of f. 126r. The Middle English entries feature a number of rare words, including a few hapax legomena. In other instances, that of the St John’s glossary is the first occurrence of the word ever attested in Middle English. Hence, the little studied glossary reveals itself to be a treasure-trove for the lexicographer. Moreover, whereas the number of borrowings from French is limited to two words, the glossary contains several loanwords from Old Norse. La digressione sulla Selva Ercinia (De bello Gallico VI, 26-29) è presa in esame da un punto di vista romano, piuttosto che germanico (anche perché Cesare aveva una limitata conoscenza della cultura germanica) e per quanto il suo contenuto può dire degli intendimenti di Cesare.
