Drimane Sesquiterpenoids from Marasmius sp. Inhibiting the Conidial Germination of Plant-Pathogenic Fungi

From the basidiomycete Marasmius sp., strain IBWF 96046, three new sesquiterpenoids based on the drimane skeleton were isolated and named marasmene B and marasmals B and C. In this study, their isolation, structure elucidation, and biological evaluation are described. The compounds have a pronounced inhibitory effect on the conidial germination of several plant-pathogenic fungi.

Prediction of potential environmental toxicity of chemicals in <em>Lactuca sativa</em> seed germination using computational tools

The main aim of the study was to develop quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models for the prediction of phytotoxicity effects of chemical compounds on the Lactuca sativa seeds germination. A database of 73 compounds, assayed against L. sativa and Dragon’s molecular descriptors are used to obtain a QSAR model for the prediction of the phytotoxicity. The model is carried out with QSARINS software and validated according to OECD principles. The best model showed good value for the determination coefficient (R2 = 0.917) and others parameters appropriate for fitting (s = 0.256 and RMSEtr= 0.236). AbstractSeed salinity tolerance and dormancy play important roles in germination behaviour. The effects of NaCl concentration and different dormancy-breaking treatments on germination were determined for six species growing on the coasts of the Baltic Sea or the Gulf of Riga: Juncus balticus, Triglochin maritima, Triglochin palustre, Anthyllis maritima, Linaria vulgaris and Linaria loeselii. Germination percentages were significantly reduced at NaCl concentrations >100 mM. Germination of J. balticus, T. maritima and T. palustre, but not that of A. maritima and L. vulgaris, recovered after seeds were rinsed with distilled water. Sarcopoterium spinosum (L.) Spach is a nanophanerophyte whose presence in Sicily is limited to the South-East of the island. A study on seed germination behaviour of seeds collected from some populations indicates low viability of seedlings which could seriously put the long-term survival of these populations at risk.

Seed germination reports of high mountain species native to Mount Etna (Sicily)

The germination ability of five endemic species from the high mountain belt of Mt. Etna were studied; they are Astragalus siculus, Erysimum etnense, Senecio squalidus subsp. aethnensis, Silene italica subsp. sicula, and Tanacetum vulgare subsp. siculum. Mature seeds were collected in the field, within an elevation range of 1700–2000 m a.s.l. Different experimental conditions were tested and the best methods with optimal germination results are provided and compared for each species. First germination records are given for 4 out of 5 of the investigated taxa.
Chemical composition and herbicidal activity of the essential oil from a Cistus ladanifer population from Spain

[EN] The essential oil composition of Cistus ladanifer grown in central Spain was analysed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, revealing it to be rich in oxygenated compounds, with trans-pinocarveol (20.00%), bornyl acetate (7.03%) and terpinen-4-ol (6.37%) as the main monoterpene compounds. Viridiflorol (13.59%) and ledol (4.36%) were the main constituents of the oxygenated sesquiterpene fraction. Large amounts of-pinene (4.70%) were found in the hydrocarbonated fractions.
