GESTURES AS A COMMUNICATION FEATURE IN CHILDREN WITH DEVELOPMENTAL LANGUAGE DISORDER

2019

Gestures as non-verbal communication allow us to express our attitude, emotional state, and it functions unconsciously. The verbal communication appears in the life of a child about 2 years of age and gradually replaces the non-verbal communication. However, children with DLD (Developmental Language Disorder) at the age of 3 and more do not speak or speak using separate sounds and combinations of sounds in their speech and use gestures broadly; it helps them to communicate with others. The aim of the article is to explore what kind of gestures as non-verbal communication are used by children with DLD in order to communicate with peers and adults. Based on the scientific literature of the re…

Gesture recognition using low-cost devices: Techniques, applications, perspectives

2016

Successivamente, saranno presentati alcuni…

Il gesto come risorsa biolinguistica

2014

Research on the role played by gesture in language development have supported the hypothesis of a strong interconnection between language and movement (KIMURA 1981, MCNEILL 1992, PÜLVERMUELLER et al. 1996,IVERSON & THELEN 1999, BATES & FREDERIC 2002). Motor actions of hand and mouth are present from birth but this link becomes significant as a result of shared social meaning. In early infancy, hand-to-mouth behavior are extremely common in infants’ spontaneous movements and occur similarly both in hearing and deaf children (see FONTANA & VOLTERRA 2012 for a review). Furthermore, similar motor constraints have been found in the production of gestures and a correlation between first actions a…

Fully automatic, real-time detection of facial gestures from generic video

2005

A technique for the detection of facial gestures from low resolution video sequences is presented. The technique builds upon the automatic 3D head tracker formulation of [M. La Cascia et al., 2000]. The tracker is based on the registration of a texture-mapped cylindrical model. Facial gesture analysis is performed in the texture map by assuming that the residual registration error can be modeled as a linear combination of facial motion templates. Two formulations are proposed and tested. In one formulation, the head and facial motion are estimated in a single, combined linear system. In the other formulation, head motion and then facial motion are estimated in a two-step process. The two-st…

Print and online newspapers as material artefacts

2014

Traditional newspaper journalism is in a state of crisis and there have been several attempts to overcome this. Many discourses have reiterated the triumphal march of a digital revolution in newspaper journalism and anticipated the end of the print newspaper. This moment calls for an in-depth analysis of reader habits of news consumption and use in order to understand the audiences for journalistic output and their relationship with the journalistic objects. In this study, we adopt a multi-method approach, integrating (1) qualitative content analysis of student essays dealing with the physicality of printed and online newspapers, (2) ethnographic observation of the use practices of readers…

Improvisation et processus compositionnel dans la genèse de Fenêtre Ovale de Karl Naëgelen

2015

Improvisation and Compositional Process in Karl Naëgelen’s Fenêtre Ovale
This paper is centred around the analysis of the creative process underlying the genesis of a recent work of music by French composer Karl Naëgelen, Fenêtre Ovale (2011), written in collaboration with two free improvisers active on the Parisian scene, Ève Risser (piano) and Joris Rühl (clarinet). This piece is remarkable in that, contrary to the vast majority of works composed in a so-called “comprovisation” framework, where the interaction between the composed and the improvised elements essentially takes place during the moments of performance, its score never actually requires any act of improvisation from its…

Embodied responses to musical experience detected by human bio-feedback brain features in a geminoid augmented architecture

2018

Abstract This paper presents the conceptual framework for a study of musical experience and the associated architecture centred on Human-Humanoid Interaction (HHI). On the grounds of the theoretical and experimental literature on the biological foundation of music, the grammar of music perception and the perception and feeling of emotions in music hearing, we argue that music cognition is specific and that it is realized by a cognitive capacity for music that consists of conceptual and affective constituents. We discuss the relationship between such constituents that enables understanding, that is extracting meaning from music at the different levels of the organization of sounds that are f…

The Role of Gamma Oscillations During Integration of Metaphoric Gestures and Abstract Speech

2018

Metaphoric (MP) co-speech gestures are commonly used during daily communication. They communicate about abstract information by referring to gestures that are clearly concrete (e.g., raising a hand for "the level of the football game is high"). To understand MP co-speech gestures, a multisensory integration at semantic level is necessary between abstract speech and concrete gestures. While semantic gesture-speech integration has been extensively investigated using functional magnetic resonance imaging, evidence from electroencephalography (EEG) is rare. In the current study, we set out an EEG experiment, investigating the processing of MP vs. iconic (IC) co-speech gestures in different cont…
