The vegetation of mining dumps in SW-Sardinia

2005

The vegetation of mining dumps of SW-Sardinia includes several endemic or rare species, that have been confined to such artificial habitats by a millennial mining activity. The extreme edaphic specialisation of these species reflects with unusual fidelity the heterogeneity of substrata, therefore creating a system of plant communities that largely contributes to the environmental diversity of this part of the island. The phytosociological study presented in this paper recognized eight associations, distinguished by the cluster analysis in two main groups, the first including hemicrypto-chamaephytic vegetation, the second including nanophanerophytic garigues. Six associations are belonging t…

VegItaly: The Italian collaborative project for a national vegetation database

2012

Abstract Two years after its official start, the national vegetation database VegItaly, a collaborative project supported by the Italian scientific community and developed by a large group of scientists, is presented. This article offers a concise overview of the content of the database, currently consisting of 31,100 vegetation plot, including published and unpublished data. Some basic statistics are analysed; for example, data distribution in space and time, represented vegetation types expressed as physiognomic categories. Although rather young and still in progress, VegItaly already contains data from all the Italian regions and stands as an optimal candidate for the development of an I…

Naphthalenone polyketides produced by Neofusicoccum parvum, a fungus associated with grapevine Botryosphaeria dieback

2016

A strain of Neofusicoccum parvum isolated from declining vines was pathogenic to grapevine cultivar Inzolia in Sicily. This strain produced some metabolites in liquid medium. Crude extract, through a bio-guided purification process, yielded four naphthalenone polyketides. They were identified by comparison with spectroscopic data and optical proprieties reported in literature as: (3S, 4S)-7-ethyl-3,4,8-trihydroxy-6-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-1-(2H)-naphthalenone, (3S*, 4S*)-3,4-dihydro-3,4,8-trihydroxy-7-(1-hydroxyethyl)-6-methoxy-1-(2H)-naphthalenone, (4S)-3,4-dihydro-4,8-dihydroxy-1-(2H)-naphthalenone, named  botryosphaerones D and A, isosclerone, respectively,  and (3S*,4S*)-3,4,5-trihydroxy-1-…

Stato sanitario e micorrizazione in specie arboree forestali: casi studio in Italia

2016

Wetland Restoration with Hydrophytes: A Review

2021

Restoration cases with hydrophytes (those which develop all their vital functions inside the water or very close to the water surface, e.g., flowering) are less abundant compared to those using emergent plants. Here, I synthesize the latest knowledge in wetland restoration based on revegetation with hydrophytes and stress common challenges and potential solutions. The review mainly focusses on natural wetlands but also includes information about naturalized constructed wetlands, which nowadays are being used not only to improve water quality but also to increase biodiversity. Available publications, peer-reviewed and any public domain, from the last 20 years, were reviewed. Several countrie…

Perception of pathogenic or beneficial bacteria and their evasion of host immunity: pattern recognition receptors in the frontline

2015

International audience; Plants are continuously monitoring the presence of microorganisms to establish an adapted response. Plants commonly use pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) to perceive microbe- or pathogen-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs/PAMPs) which are microorganism molecular signatures. Located at the plant plasma membrane, the PRRs are generally receptor-like kinases (RLKs) or receptor-like proteins (RLPs). MAMP detection will lead to the establishment of a plant defense program called MAMP-triggered immunity (MTI). In this review, we overview the RLKs and RLPs that assure early recognition and control of pathogenic or beneficial bacteria. We also highlight the crucial func…

Estimation of the pollen and seed production of common ragweed in Europe

2007

International audience; Common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) is an invasive weed of fieldcrops and human-disturbed habitats in Europe. As well as in its natural range (NorthAmerica), common ragweed is a threat to human health due to its abundant allergenicpollen release. Most studies have been focused on airborne pollen monitoring, but todate, no data have been available on precise individual plant pollen and seed productionrelated to plant traits growing in natural environment and on their corresponding sourceof variation. The aim of this study was to evaluate pollen and seed production of commonragweed plants in several populations in France. Seasonal pollen production per plantran…

Étude d'inclusions végétales dans des tessons de poterie ou des matériaux de construction

2005

Vegetal inclusions embedded in clayey materials (cob, ceramic, mudbrick) are investigated by using impregnation of the porous material with a fluorescent polymer. The micro-casting of the porosity is exploited by following two ways. Sections of the treated samples are examined under UV-light, showing vegetal structures amenable to a botanical identification and quantification. Moreover, micro-casts embedded in the mineral matrix have been successfully sorted. This new application is a tool to study archaeological samples previously not amenable to the work of archaeobotanists and to expand their field of investigation.
