Multisite musculoskeletal pain trajectories from midlife to old age : a 28-year follow-up of municipal employees

2018

ObjectivesWe studied the developmental trajectories of multisite musculoskeletal pain (MSP) to learn whether pain in midlife persists to old age, and whether pain trajectories associate with midlife work or lifestyle exposures or retirement from work.MethodsMunicipal employees aged 44–58 years were studied in 1981 (n=6257) with follow-ups in 1985, 1992, 1997 and 2009. Pain in the neck, low back, and upper and lower limbs was assessed in each survey. Trajectories of the number (0–4) of pain sites were defined using growth mixture modelling (n=3093). Workload, lifestyle and morbidity were elicited by questionnaire and retirement from registries. Associations of baseline factors with pain traj…

Importance of frequency and intensity of strength training for reduced musculoskeletal pain in the back, neck–shoulder, and arm–hand among physical t…

2020

Background: Musculoskeletal pain (MP) is common among health care professionals, including physical therapists (PTs). The physically demanding nature of their work might contribute to increase MP rates. Strength training has a positive effect on musculoskeletal health and MP. However, no studies have evaluated the association of strength training during leisure time on MP among PTs. This study aims to analyze the association between frequency and intensity of strength training during leisure time and MP in the back, neck–shoulder, and arm–hand among PTs. Methods: Data on MP and intensity and frequency of strength training were obtained using a questionnaire responded by 1006 PTs. The odds f…

Modelling the relationships between emotional responses to, and musical content of, music therapy improvisations

2007

This article reports a study in which listeners were asked to provide continuous ratings of perceived emotional content of clinical music therapy improvisations. Participants were presented with 20 short excerpts of music therapy improvisations, and had to rate perceived activity, pleasantness and strength using a computer-based slider interface. A total of nine musical features relating to various aspects of the music (timing, register, dynamics, tonality, pulse clarity and sensory dissonance) were extracted from the excerpts, and relationships between these features and participants' emotion ratings were investigated. The data were analysed in three stages. First, inter-dimension correla…

La metamorfosi dell'artista. Leonardo Sciascia dalla narrativa alla saggistica

2010

Interactive Multiobjective Optimization in Lot Sizing with Safety Stock and Safety Lead Time

2021

In this paper, we integrate a lot sizing problem with the problem of determining optimal values of safety stock and safety lead time. We propose a probability of product availability formula to assess the quality of safety lead time and a multiobjective optimization model as an integrated lot sizing problem. In the proposed model, we optimize six objectives simultaneously: minimizing purchasing cost, ordering cost, holding cost and, at the same time, maximizing cycle service level, probability of product availability and inventory turnover. To present the applicability of the proposed model, we consider a real case study with data from a manufacturing company and apply the interactive NAUTI…

What?s new in intelligent transportation systems?: An overview of European projects and initiatives

2013

This article is a taxonomy of recent intelligent transportation systems (ITS) initiatives/projects in Europe, and it covers nearly all of the main segments of the transportation sector. The purpose is to appraise the milestones that have been reached so far in the area of ITS. Furthermore, this article will help in identifying directions for future research. By highlighting the potential advantages users get through deployed ITS solutions, this article stimulates the interest of users and relevant stakeholders in the uptake of this technology. Finally, it will also serve as a useful resource for those agents of the scientific community who are interested in taking part in the European Commi…

The evolution of COVID-19: A discontinuous approach.

2021

The evolution of the COVID-19 disease is monitored on the basis of the daily number of infected patients and the daily number of deaths provided from national health agencies. The variation of such parameters with time parallels that described for the growth/decay of historic transportation systems revealing the appearance of discontinuities. The evolution of the pandemic disease is represented in terms of two nominally equivalent formulations: a logistic model with sharp changes in its rate parameters, and in topological terms resulting in 2nd order phase transitions in the infected patients/time space.

Multiplicity and history have a detrimental effect on survival in patients with T1G3 bladder tumors selected for conservative treatment.

2008

Purpose: In the absence of Tis tumor we assessed whether history and multiplicity have a detrimental effect on conservative treatment in carefully selected patients with T1G3 bladder carcinoma. Materials and Methods: Between January 1976 and December 1999, 165 select patients with T1G3 bladder tumors were conservatively treated with transurethral resection plus adjuvant intravesical therapy. Patients with concomitant or previous Tis, previous T1G3, tumor size greater than 3 cm and more than 3 lesions were excluded from analysis. Repeat transurethral resection was not routinely performed. However, cytology had to be negative for atypia before the start of adjuvant intravesical therapy. Resul…

The pathologist's role in the detection of rare variants of bladder cancer and analysis of the impact on incidence and type detection.

2018

BACKGROUND: Histology is one of the most important factors determining the prognosis of bladder cancers and rare variants are generally associated with decreased disease specific survival compared to pure transitional cell carcinomas. We believe that rare bladder cancer variants are likely underdiagnosed in the absence of a dedicated uro-pathologist in many centers. The objective of this study is to evaluate the contribution of a dedicated uro-pathologist on the identification of rare bladder cancer variants. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical and histological records of all patients which underwent a radical cystectomy and lymph node dissection between January 2000 and Septe…

Comparison of HapMap and 1000 genomes reference panels in a large-scale genome-wide association study

2017

An increasing number of genome-wide association (GWA) studies are now using the higher resolution 1000 Genomes Project reference panel (1000G) for imputation, with the expectation that 1000G imputation will lead to the discovery of additional associated loci when compared to HapMap imputation. In order to assess the improvement of 1000G over HapMap imputation in identifying associated loci, we compared the results of GWA studies of circulating fibrinogen based on the two reference panels. Using both HapMap and 1000G imputation we performed a meta-analysis of 22 studies comprising the same 91,953 individuals. We identified six additional signals using 1000G imputation, while 29 loci were ass…
