Solidification of a colloidal hard sphere like model system approaching and crossing the glass transition

2014

We investigated the process of vitrification and crystallization in a model system of colloidal hard spheres. The kinetics of the solidification process was measured using time resolved static light scattering, while the time evolution of the dynamic properties was determined using time resolved dynamic light scattering. By performing further analysis we confirm that solidification of hard sphere colloids is mediated by precursors. Analyzing the dynamic properties we can show that the long time dynamics and thus the shear rigidity of the metastable melt is highly correlated with the number density of solid clusters (precursors) nucleated. In crystallization these objects convert into highly…

Triphenyl group containing molecular glasses of azobenzene for photonic applications

2016

Abstract D-π-A type organic molecules have attracted considerable attention of scientists due to their potential applications in nonlinear optics and holographic data storage as light, flexible and low-cost photonic materials. To provide a better understanding on the relation between the compound chemical structure and their physical properties necessary for the mentioned purposes, eight glassy triphenyl group containing derivatives of azobenzene with incorporated 5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-enylidene or 4H-pyran-4-ylidene structural fragments and dicyanomethylene, indene-1,3-dione and pyrimidine-2,4,6(1H,3H,5H)-trione acceptor groups have been synthesized and investigated. Thermal stability of …

Synthesis and investigation of charge transport properties in adducts of hole transporting carbazole derivatives and push-pull azobenzenes

2019

Abstract In order to investigate the viability of a material design for bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells, where hole transporting group is bound to the donor moiety, we report the synthesis and charge transport characteristics of 3-(diphenylamino)carbazolyl-functionalized derivatives of 2-(4-((4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)diazenyl)benzylidene)-1H-indene-1,3-dione (DMAAzi) chromophore. Three different bounding configurations were examined in these adducts. Additionally, a trityl-functionalized derivative of DMAAzi was prepared and used for comparison purposes. All of the synthesized materials form thin amorphous films from volatile organic solvents and exhibit glass transition temper…

Fracture Toughness of Hydrothermally Aged Epoxy Systems with Different Crosslink Density

2015

Abstract The present work investigates the fracture toughness behaviour of Single Edge Notched Bending (SENB) samples of epoxy systems subject to water uptake aging. Two epoxy systems with a significantly different Glass Transition Temperature, T g , are in particular considered: a typical commercial non-aeronautical grade resin matrix for composite applications, reaching a T g of 90 °C, and a DGEBA+DDS epoxy system achieving a T g of 230 °C.The materials have been conditioned by hydrothermal aging in a thermal bath at the temperature of 50 °C. TransmissionPhotoelastic Stress Analysisis carried outon SENB samples during water aging, monitoring the presence and evolution of swelling stresses…

Pressure dependence of density and structural relaxation of glass near the glass transition region

2017

International audience; A simplified and effective pressure cell together with an experimental procedure has been developed and applied to compress samples of SCHOTT N-BK7 glass under static high pressures in a piston-cylinder apparatus. Results from the density and volume recovery measurements show that, the glass samples were effectively densified in piston-cylinder apparatus with the density at room temperature increasing linearly with frozen-in pressure. To explain the experimental data, we developed a mathematical model based on a suggestion by Gupta (1988) with two internal parameters, named fictive temperature (Tf) and fictive pressure (Pf), which fits the experimental data well.

Capacitive scanning dilatometry and frequency-dependent thermal expansion of polymer films

2000

The dilatometric properties of polymer films near and above their glass-transition temperatures were explored using capacitive high-frequency detection in temperature ramping as well as in harmonic temperature cycling experiments. The broad applicability of capacitive scanning dilatometry is demonstrated by the investigation of macromolecular systems of vastly different polarity such as polystyrene, polybutadiene, and polyvinylacetate. From temperature cycling experiments the real and imaginary parts of the frequency-dependent thermal-expansion coefficient are determined in the sub-Hz regime.

The effect of THF and the chelating modifier DTHFP on the copolymerisation of β-myrcene and styrene: kinetics, microstructures, morphologies, and mec…

2022

The statistical anionic copolymerisation of the biobased monomer β-myrcene with styrene in cyclohexane was investigated via in situ near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, focusing on the influence of the modifiers (i.e., Lewis bases) tetrahydrofuran (THF) and 2,2-di(2-tetrahydrofuryl)propane (DTHFP) on the reactivity ratios. With increasing [modifier]/[Li] ratio, the reactivity ratios in the system myrcene/styrene are adjustable from rS ≪ rMyrvia rS ≈ rMyr to rS ≫ rMyr. The bidentate modifier DTHFP affects the reactivity ratios much more than THF: minute amounts only (0.35 equivalent relative to Li) are required to randomize the copolymer, and one equivalent to invert the reactivity ratios. Usin…

Characterizations of Thermoplastic Block Elastomers Based on Polybutadiene and ε -Caprolactone

2010

A broad series of tri- and multiblock copolymers based on linear and branched oligomers of polybutadiene as central blocks and polycaprolactone (PCL) as block extremities are characterized by SEC, DSC, DMA, Dynamical Rheology and DRX. DSC analyses reveal phase separation between the two amorphous PB and PCL phases. By thermal analysis, the glass transition temperature of PCL is only detected for materials containing at least 80% w/w of PCL. This is attributed to the small length of the polyester blocks for copolymers containing less than 80% w/w of PCL. The increase of fusion heat with increasing PCL content in the copolymers is correlated to the greater ability of PCL chains to rearrange a…
