Li2OSiO2Al2O3MeIIO Glass-Ceramic Systems for Tile Glaze Applications

1991

In order to verify the possibility of using glass-ceramic materials as tile coatings, the devitrification processes of three industrial formulations belonging to the Li2O─Al2O3─SiO2 glass-ceramic system were investigated by differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and IR spectroscopy. Compositional variations were made by addition of large amounts of MgO or CaO or PbO (ZnO) oxides as well as through smaller additions of other oxides. In these systems the surface crystallization contributes appreciably to the bulk crystallization mechanism. All the systems investigated show a high tendency toward crystallization even at very high heating rates, devel…

Microstructural Evolution in Fast-Heated Cordierite-Based Glass-Ceramic Glazes for Ceramic Tile

2004

The crystallization mechanism of α-cordierite from a B 2 O 3 -and TiO 2 -containing glass submitted to fast heating in the cordierite primary phase field of the CaO-MgO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 quaternary system was investigated. Addition of B 2 O 3 to a SiO 2 -rich glass suppressed the formation of μ-cordierite. This suppression facilitated densification by viscous flow before crystallization. Powder X-ray diffractometry, field-emission electron scanning microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis revealed that α-cordierite nucleated directly from glass on the boundaries of original particles and was probably favored by TiO 2 , which acted as a nucleant. The growth kinetics of α-cordierite cry…

Effect of MgO/CaO ratio on the microstructure of cordierite-based glass-ceramic glazes for floor tiles

2005

Abstract The effect of the MgO/CaO ratio on the microstructure and microhardness of cordierite-based glass-ceramic glazes was studied. For this purpose glasses, with compositions in the cordierite primary phase field of the CaO–MgO–Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 quaternary system and, with different MgO/CaO ratios, were prepared by melting. Glass powder pellets pressed under low pressure were fast heated at several temperatures simulating industrial floor-tile processing, and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy dispersive X-ray emission spectroscopy (EDX). The studied glasses crystallized α-cordierite as the only crystalline phase…

Effect of additives on the crystallization of cordierite-based glass-ceramics as glazes for floor tiles

2003

Abstract The effect of several additives such as fluxes and/or nucleants on a parent glass with composition located in the primary field of cordierite within the quaternary system CaO–MgO–Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 has been examined. Crystallization path of glasses was determined by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Pressed pellets of powdered glasses containing different additives were submitted at thermal treatments up to 1200 °C. The microstructural development at several temperatures was followed by field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The results shown that additions of TiO 2 as nucleant and/or B 2 O 3 as flux to a…

Identification of overglaze and underglaze cobalt decoration of ceramics from Valencia(Spain) by portable EDXRF spectrometry

2004

The purpose of this work is the application of non-destructive analysis to differentiate underglaze and overglaze techniques used in the decoration of glazed ceramics from Valencia (Spain). This study was carried out by portable EDXRF spectrometry using an X-ray tube and a thermoelectrically cooled semiconductor detector. From the EDXRF spectra we have identified the main elements present in the tin-opacified lead glaze and in the cobalt pigments. The identification of the underglaze and overglaze decoration is based on the different ratios between the fluorescence line of the main component of the glaze (Pb-La line) and the fluorescence lines of the main components of the pigment (Co-Ka, M…

Tang dynasty (618-907) bowl measured with PIXE

2017

Brownish bowl originating from an underwater shipwreck located near Belitung island in the Java Sea, some 600 km south-east from Singapore, has been measured with particle induced X-ray emission. This study was a pilot project for the – now a spin-off company – Recenart research team where one target was to evaluate the authenticity of the different type of art objects. PIXE measurements were done from three different material positions from a single bowl received from a customer. These locations were categorized as a bluish/greenish pigment (under glaze), thick glaze and the body clay. When the obtained data was compared to the other references from different dynasties and kiln sites, the …

Integrazione di celle fotovoltaiche ibride nel vetromattone

2012

The integration of Dye-sensitized Solar Cell (DSC) with the glassblock is disclosed. The combination of the two technological elements the glassblock and the DSC module enhance their own peculiarities. The final complete product is ready-made for installation owns the qualities of the glassblock and produces sustainable energy at the same time. The transparency and the thermo-acoustic insulation may be modulated according to the specific requirements of each case of installation. The product may be used for example to create PV panels for glazed and translucent façades that are able to perform efficiently in all light conditions (even in diffuse light also converting internal artificial light) that are not dependant on the angle of the solar radiation and do not suffer from the high operative temperatures of functioning due to the peculiarities of the DSCs. DSCs are made of economic and biocompatible materials and are produced with low-cost and highly productive printing methods on rigid or flexible substrates. With the integration of DSC modules with the glassblock PV panels coincide with the envelope itself so that they do not need any further structures to be installed on and allow the possibility of subtract from the price of the panel the price of the substituted building element allowing further economies. DSCs can be printed in different colours and with various patterns offering to designers and customers the possibility of intervening on the glassblock aesthetical aspect also taking advantage of the peculiar modularity of the glassblock for larger compositions of drawings on the building’s façade. Seven Hypotheses of integration are discussed in order to obtain DSC-integrated glassblock ready for the construction of a precast and dry-assembled PV panel which can use the horizontal and vertical cavities between the glassblocks to house plastic profiles where the electric interconnections and the steel bars -useful for improve the mechanical resistance of the panel- are integrated.Settore ICAR/10 - Architettura Tecnica

Voltammetric Identification of Lead(II) and (IV) in Mediaeval Glazes in Abrasion-Modified Carbon Paste and Polymer Film Electrodes. Application to th…

2000

Direct identification of lead(II) and (IV) in glazed ceramics by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry is described. Characteristic cathodic and anodic profiles are obtained for microsample coatings in Paraloid B72-film electrodes immersed in NaCl and HAc/NaAc media. The electrochemical response of PbO, PbO2 and Pb3O4, and a series of test specimens of glaze is compared with that of microsamples extracted from the glaze of blue and white decorated ceramic produced in Manises (Spain) in the 15th century which have been buried in a damp place. Under abrasive conditions, striping peaks at –0.12 and –0.25 V (vs. SCE) appear for Pb(IV) centers and, at –0.55 and –0.75 V, for Pb(II…
