Peace as a Priority

2012

Chapter 9 underlines how since its inception the European Union has presented itself to the world as a great “peace project”. The European project consists in creating a “community of peace and democracy” based on the conviction that peace does not emerge from dissuasion but rather out of cooperation. Europe attempts to remodel the world by realising the Kantian dream of “perpetual peace”, which is not based on the balance of military powers (or the supremacy of one of them) but rather on the universal recognition of the dignity of the human being, on the universal guarantee of human rights, and on sustainable human development, which means superseding the current neoliberal model of global…

Challenges in business communication : the essence of corporate English communications practices in Finnish firms

2012

Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on kartoittaa englanninkielistä viestintää suomalaisissa yrityksissä. Tutkimuksen aineistona on kuusi puolistrukturoitua syvähaastattelua. Haastateltavat työskentelevät Suomessa eri alojen yrityksissä erityyppisissä tehtävissä. Haastattelut nauhoitettiin, litteroitiin ja analysoitiin teemoittain. Tutkimusten tulokset osoittivat kansainvälisen viestinnän suuren osuu…

Advanced services and city globalization on the Eastern fringe of Europe

2007

Capital cities in East Central and Eastern European Countries (ECEEC) are changing rapidly. Since the 1990s, the ECEEC capitals have faced the double challenge of the market (the transition process) and of integration in the world economy (the globalization process), which supposes a sufficient development of coordination functions and thus of advanced services concentrated in these cities (city globalization). Their capacity to join the network of global cities is evaluated on the basis of their relative specializations in advanced services and their connections with the rest of the world. The comparative analysis leads to contrasted globalization perspectives. Thus, Budapest, Prague and W…

The sterilization of eco-criticism: from sustainable development to green capitalism

2015

Exotic Ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) Invading Mediterranean Europe: a Brief Summary over About 200 Years of Documented Introductions

2019

Exotic ants have emerged as a relevant topic worldwide because of their remarkable impacts on native ecosystems and human activities. A first regional overview is given on the dozens of exotic ant species recorded in Mediterranean Europe since the end of the 19th century. About 39 exotic ant species, belonging to 17 genera and originating from 5 different biogeographical realms, are currently believed to be established in this region. The genera Nylanderia and Tetramorium are those hosting the larger proportion of species, while the Afrotropical realm is the prevalent source of taxa. According to the available data, France, Greece, Italy and Spain all host a high number of exotic species, w…

The fall and the fragmentation of national clusters: Cluster evolution in the paper and pulp industry

2012

Abstract A common expectation in evolutionary cluster studies is that national clusters engage in competitive interactions that lead to a continuous stream of changes in global dominance. Our fuzzy-set analysis on the evolution of the paper and pulp industry demonstrates that globalization has dramatically changed this situation. National clusters have largely faded away; the value chain dominance is now held by technology suppliers who are global hubs in majority of identifiable business activities in the focal industry. Our results imply that when industrial decline is accentuated by industrial concentration in some part of the value chain the national clusters may lose their importance.

The Rise of the BRICS and Higher Education Dynamics

2015

This book deals with the developments, policies and perspectives of higher education in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa—the BRICS countries. Our starting point is the evolution of the higher education systems in the BRICS countries, looking less, however, at the institutional dimensions of the universities and more at the broader context (e.g. operational and regulatory) in terms of four main issues or core themes, namely: supply and demand, stakeholders, governmental policy and research and innovation in the light of international trends and globalization.

THE IMPACT OF REGIONAL AND COHESION POLICY ON THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE EU

2012

As the global financial and economic crisis hit the European Union, no country was left unharmed. To this day, the Member States share the burden of excessive foreign debt, inflation, budget deficit, high unemployment levels, shaken stability of the currency, and many more. Multiple responses were introduced to these damaging effects, including adopting changes to the use of the Globalisation Adjustment Fund, enabling a Financial Stability Mechanism for the Euro zone and introducing a number of micro-financing instruments, particularly to support SMEs. Nevertheless, these have all been short-term actions, which will not suffice to ensure a long-term, sustainable economic growth of the Europ…

Tourism for Development in the Republic of Moldova

2020

Can globalization be socially inclusive through new 2.0 digital initiatives? This is the thought-provoking question we ask in this article, with a special focus on the Republic of Moldova. Part 1 begins with a reflection on the intersection between globalization, development studies and the current Moldovan context. Part 2 is devoted to the promising field of emergent tourism, and more particularly, tourism 2.0, a blossoming concept that we try to uncover. Part 3 presents a concrete application with the example of Moldova Tours 2.0, a digital initiative in the field of tourism 2.0 in the Republic of Moldova. Various aspects of this project are highlighted and analyzed.

PROBLEMS OF UNIVERSITY INSTITUTIONAL GOVERNANCE IN CHANGING ENVIRONMENT

2012

The problem identified in all Europe and other countries is the following: 21th century expectations from society have enlarged the university goals, and in order to reach these goals, university needs new governance processes both at institutional and state level. Along with traditional university goals of providing higher education studies and research, there is an increase of university participation in social activities, as well as global competitiveness. Businesses insist that studies are resulted in higher education compliance with labour market, and research results’ transfer to investments of national economy. The institutional governance issues are becoming more complicated and the…
