Glutathionyl-biliverdin IXα, a new heme catabolite in a marine annelid: Sex and cell specific accumulation.

Abstract We have isolated and characterized the green pigment accumulating in coelomic cells (eleocytes) of the common clam worm Nereis virens by means of RP-HPLC and ESI-tandem mass spectrometry. This pigment is a novel biliverdin-glutathione conjugate in which the glutathione is linked to the biliverdin-backbone via a thioether bond. The yolk precursor vitellogenin, a female-specific high-density lipoprotein ( ρ  = 1179 kg/m 3 ) with a native molecular mass of ∼500 kDa and a subunit mass of ∼150 kDa, is capable of transporting this pigment as well as heme. Effects of Rosiglitazone on Fasting and Postprandial Low- and High-Density Lipoproteins Size and Subclasses in Type 2 Diabetes

Rosiglitazone may increase cardiovascular risk in patients with type 2 diabetes. Yet, its effects on atherogenic dyslipidemia are still not fully elucidated. In a prospective open-label study rosiglitazone (4 mg/day for 12 weeks) was added to a maximum of 2 oral antidiabetic drugs in 18 diabetic patients. We evaluated the effects on plasma lipids before and after an oral fat load. The size and subclasses of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were also determined (by gradient gel electrophoresis). Abstract The effects of a nitric oxide-donor, S -nitroso- N -acetylpenicillamine, and a direct activator of soluble guanylyl cyclase, 3-(5′-hydroxymethyl-2′-furyl)-1-benzyl indazole (YC-1), on force of contraction ( F c ) and L-type Ca 2+ currents ( I Ca(L) ) were investigated in myocardial preparations from neonatal and adult rats. Since hearts from adult and neonatal animals contained 160 and 47 mg/100 g wet weight myoglobin, respectively, its possible interaction with both drugs was also investigated. Multiple food hypersensitivity as a cause of refractory chronic constipation in adults

Chronic constipation that is unresponsive to laxative treatment is a severe illness, but children unresponsive to laxatives have been successfully treated with an elimination diet. We report the first cases of refractory chronic constipation caused by food hypersensitivity in adults. Four patients with refractory constipation who were unresponsive to high doses of laxatives were put on an oligo-antigenic diet and underwent successive double-blind, placebo-controlled, food challenges (DBPFC). Abstract Background Frailty predicts mortality after acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The standard frailty scales, such as the Fried score, consist of a variety of questionnaires and physical tests. The rapidity and efficacy of a short course of liposomal amphotericin B was evaluated in 29 children affected by visceral leishmaniasis (Leishmania infantum). Their overall health status was assessed using the prognostic inflammatory and nutritional index (PINI), and their haematological status by the reticulocyte count and haemoglobin blood levels. All these quantities were measured on day 0, and 3 and 10 d after starting therapy. A significant decrease of inflammatory signs, associated with an improved reticulocyte count, was recorded after 3 d of therapy.
