Renal Impairment Is Associated with Intracerebral Hemorrhage after Mechanical Thrombectomy in Vertebrobasilar Stroke

2018

<b><i>Background and Purpose:</i></b> Renal dysfunction (RD) is overall associated with unfavorable functional outcome and higher risk of mortality after acute ischemic stroke. Associations between RD and outcome in patients with acute vertebrobasilar stroke treated with thrombectomy have not been evaluated so far. <b><i>Materials and Methods:</i></b> Consecutive patients with vertebrobasilar stroke treated with mechanical thrombectomy between October 2010 and July 2017 at our center were analyzed. RD was defined as glomerular filtration rate (GFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 at admission. Endpoints were (I) poor clinic…

Progression of aortic pulse wave velocity in patients with chronic kidney disease.

2013

Aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV) is elevated in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and predicts cardiovascular risk. However, the natural progression of arterial stiffness in these patients remains uncertain. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to investigate the development of aPWV and to identify potential factors associated with its progression. aPWV measurement was carried out in 70 CKD patients at baseline and after 12 months. Correlations to several variables, in particular annual glomerular filtration rate reduction and diabetes mellitus, were studied. In the cohort, aPWV significantly increased in 1 year by 1.1 m/s (P<.01). Dividing the group into patients with stable…

Cardio‐Renal Biomarker Soluble Urokinase‐Type Plasminogen Activator Receptor Is Associated With Cardiovascular Death and Myocardial Infarction in Pat…

2020

Background Risk stratification among patients with coronary artery disease ( CAD ) is of considerable interest due to the potential to guide secondary preventive therapies. Thus, we evaluated the predictive value of soluble urokinase‐type plasminogen activator receptor (su PAR ) levels for cardiovascular mortality and nonfatal myocardial infarction in patients with CAD . Methods and Results Plasma levels of su PAR were measured in a cohort of 1703 patients with documented CAD as evidenced by coronary angiography—including 626 patients with acute coronary syndrome and 1077 patients with stable angina pectoris. Cardiovascular death and/or nonfatal myocardial infarction were defined as main o…

Impact of Accessory Renal Artery Coverage on Renal Function during Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm Repair.

2021

Background Long-term outcomes of accessory renal artery (ARA) coverage after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) are unknown. We analyzed the impact of ARA coverage on renal function long-term. Methods This retrospective, monocentric study included patients treated by EVAR between 2008 and 2016. Patients with at least one ARA covered with EVAR (ARA group) were compared with patients with no covered ARA (control group). Renal function was determined by estimating the glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and graded according to chronic kidney disease (CKD) classification stages. Results A total of 184 patients were included (ARA group, n = 25; control group, n = 159). Renal risk factors were sim…

Urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin and cystatin C compared to the estimated glomerular filtration rate to predict risk in patients wi…

2016

Abstract Introduction Impaired renal function, reflected by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) or cystatin C, is a strong risk predictor in the presence of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL) is an early marker of acute kidney injury. uNGAL might also be a good predictor of outcome in patients with cardiovascular disease. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the prognostic value of uNGAL compared to eGFR and cystatin C in patients with suspected AMI. Methods 1818 patients were enrolled with suspected AMI. Follow-up information on the combined endpoint of death or non-fatal myocardial infarction was obtained 6months after…

Para-perirenal distribution of body fat is associated with reduced glomerular filtration rate regardless of other indices of adiposity in hypertensiv…

2018

Obesity is a well‐known risk factor for the development and progression of chronic kidney disease. Recently, para‐perirenal ultrasonographic fat thickness (PUFT) has shown to correlate with both total and visceral fat better than body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and other indices of obesity. Moreover, a local paracrine and mechanical action of the PUFT on kidney has been described in recent studies. Aim of our study was to assess the relationship between glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and PUFT in comparison with other anthropometric and ultrasonographic indices of adiposity. Two hundred and ninety‐six hypertensive patients were enrolled. PUFT, cutis‐rectis thickness and re…

Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis as a therapeutic alternative in patients with advanced congestive heart failure.

2012

Aims Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) has been proposed as an additional therapeutic resource for patients with advanced congestive heart failure (CHF). The objective of this study was to determine the therapeutic role of CAPD, in terms of surrogate endpoints, in the management of patients with advanced CHF and renal dysfunction. A total of 57 candidates with New York Heart Association (NYHA) class III/IV CHF, renal dysfunction (glomerular filtration rate , 60 mL/min/1.73 m 2 ), persistent fluid congestion despite loop diuretic treatment, and at least two previous hospitalizations for acute heart failure (AHF) were invited to be included in the CAPD programme; however, 25 pa…

Use of acetazolamide in the treatment of patients with refractory congestive heart failure

2018

Aims Optimal diuretic treatment of patients with refractory congestive heart failure (CHF) remains to be elucidated. In this work, we aimed to evaluate the serial changes of functional class and surrogates of fluid overload (weight and antigen carbohydrate 125) after addition of oral acetazolamide in patients with refractory CHF. Likewise, serial changes in renal function, serum electrolytes and pH were evaluated. Method This is an observational retrospective study in which 25 ambulatory patients with refractory CHF that received acetazolamide in addition to standard intensive diuretic strategy were evaluated. Longitudinal assessment of New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class and…

Association of uric acid with kidney function and albuminuria: the Uric Acid Right for heArt Health (URRAH) Project

2021

Abstract Background Hyperuricemia is commonly observed in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, a better understanding of the relationship among uric acid (UA) values, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and albuminuria may shed light on the mechanisms underlying the excess of cardiovascular mortality associated with both chronic kidney disease and hyperuricemia and lead to better risk stratification. Our main goal was to study the relationships between serum uric acid and kidney disease measures (namely estimated GFR [eGFR] and albuminuria) in a large cohort of individuals at cardiovascular risk from the URic acid Right for heArt Health (URRAH) Project database. Methods Clinica…
