Orthogonal Click Conjugation to the Liposomal Surface Reveals the Stability of the Lipid Anchorage as Crucial for Targeting

Synthetic access to multiple surface decorations are a bottleneck in the development of liposomes for receptor mediated targeting. This opens a complex multiparameter space, exploration of which is severely limited in terms of sample numbers and turnaround times. Here, we unlock this technological barrier by a combination of a milligram-scale liposome formulation using dual centrifugation and orthogonal click chemistry on the liposomal surface. Controllable Nonspecific Protein Adsorption by Charged Hyperbranched Polyglycerol Thin Films

Antifouling thin films derived from charged hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) layers were fabricated and evaluated. The anionic hbPG (a-hbPG) monolayers and cationic hbPG/anionic hbPG (c/a-hbPG) bilayers were adsorbed on the underlying self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of cysteamine and 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA) by electrostatic interaction, respectively, and their procession was monitored by surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (SPR). Enhanced one-component spray polyurethane foams via sol-gel microspheres doped with aqueous glycerol

The sol-gel microencapsulation of aqueous glycerol in silica-based microspheres affords functional materials that can be used to cure one-component polyurethane foams (OCF) formulations affording better and greener foam formation. These findings are important and may open the route to more sustainable materials, such as foams, coatings, adhesives, and sealants that are widely utilized in many industrial sectors. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Local dynamic properties of the heme pocket in native and solvent-induced molten-globule-like states of cytochrome c

We report the Soret absorption band, down to cryogenic temperature, of native and molten-globule-like state of horse heart cytochrome c. The band profile is analyzed in terms of vibronic coupling of the heme normal modes to the electronic transition in the framework of the Franck-Condon approximation. From the temperature dependence of the Gaussian broadening and of the peak position, we obtain information on the 'bath' of low frequency harmonic motions of the heme group within the heme pocket. Microscale Marangoni actuation: All-optical and all-electrical methods

We present experimental results from an all-optical microfluidic platform that may be complimented by a thin film all-electrical network. Using these configurations we have studied the microfluidic convective flow systems of silicone oil, glycerol, and 1,3,5-trinitrotoluene on open surfaces through the production of surface tension gradients derived from thermal gradients. We show that sufficient localized thermal variation can be created utilizing surface plasmons and/or engaging individually addressable resistive thermal elements. The role of glycerol transporters in yeast cells in various physiological and stress conditions.

Small and uncharged glycerol is an important molecule for yeast metabolism and osmoadaptation. Using a series of S. cerevisiae BY4741-derived mutants lacking genes encoding a glycerol exporter (Fps1p) and/or importer (Stl1p) and/or the last kinase of the HOG pathway (Hog1p), we studied their phenotypes and various physiological characteristics with the aim of finding new roles for glycerol transporters. Though the triple mutant hog1Δ stl1Δ fps1Δ was viable, it was highly sensitive to various stresses.
