Long-Term Followup of Children with Colon Conduit Urinary Diversion and Ureterosigmoidostomy
1977
Sixty-four children underwent colon conduit urinary diversion because of a neurogenic bladder owing to myelomeningocele and 39 children required a ureterosigmoidostomy because of bladder exstrophy. The average length of followup was 4.6 years after colon conduit and 5.6 years after ureterosigmoidostomy. Colon conduit diversion was secondary in 3 children and ureterosigmoidostomy was secondary in 5. Of the children with a colon conduit 9.4% and of those with ureterosigmoidostomy 12.8% had postoperative surgical complications. Late surgical complications were encountered after colon conduit in 14.5% and after ureterosigmoidostomy in 20%. Of the children with normal renal function preoperative…
Non-occlusive mesenteric Ischemia (NOMI) in Parkinsonâs disease: Case report
2017
Non-occlusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI) is a severe pathological condition characterized by signs and symptoms of bowel obstruction, intestinal necrosis resulting from acute and/or chronic inadequate blood perfusion, in the absence of an organic vascular obstruction detectable by imaging techniques. A 64 years old man case with a history of Parkinsonâs disease in high-functioning levodopa treatment is presented. Clinical and radiological signs of intestinal obstruction were observed. He underwent surgical operation with total colectomy and terminal ileostomy for generalized secondary peritonitis due to perforation of sigmoid colon. Ischemic pancolitis was first suspected. In third post-o…
Activation of angiotensin II type 1 receptors and contractile activity in human sigmoid colon in vitro.
2015
We propose and validate a non-invasive method that enables accurate detection of the discharge times of a relatively large number of motor units during excitatory and inhibitory reflex stimulations. HDsEMG and intramuscular EMG (iEMG) were recorded from the tibialis anterior muscle during ankle dorsiflexions performed at 5%, 10%, and 20% of the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) force, in 9 healthy subjects. The tibial nerve (inhibitory reflex) and the peroneal nerve (excitatory reflex) were stimulated with constant current stimuli. In total, 416 motor units were identified from the automatic decomposition of the HDsEMG. The iEMG was decomposed using a state-of-the-art decomposition tool a…
Pringle maneuver increases the risk of anastomotic leakage after colonic resection in rats.
2018
Abstract Background Many centers use the Pringle's maneuver during liver resections. Since this maneuver might impair healing of bowel anastomoses, we evaluated its influence on the healing of colonic anastomosis in rats. Methods Male Wistar rats underwent median laparotomy and sigmoid resection with end-to-end anastomosis under inhalation anesthesia. Thereafter, rats received a 25 minutes Pringle's maneuver (PM, group 1) or were kept under anesthesia for the same period of time (group 2). The anastomotic bursting pressure (BP) was measured on postoperative days (POD) 3, 6 and 9. Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining was used for histopathological evaluation of the anastomosis. The Mann-Whit…
Colon pouch (Mainz III) for continent urinary diversion
2007
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the use of a continent cutaneous pouch made exclusively of colon (Mainz pouch III), as excellent results with the Mainz pouch III in irradiated patients suggested that the indication for this type of urinary diversion could be extended. PATIENTS AND METHODS The outcome of 24 patients with continent cutaneous urinary diversions using colon segments (Mainz pouch III) was investigated retrospectively. Overall, 22 of the patients had a malignant disease and two a benign disease; 16 had a hysterectomy and pelvic exenteration for gynaecological tumours; two men with a rhabdomyosarcoma of the prostate had a radical cystoprostatectomy; one woman had pelvic exenteration for bla…
Diagnostic accuracy of computed tomographic colonography for the detection of advanced neoplasia in individuals at increased risk of colorectal cance…
2009
CONTEXT: Computed tomographic (CT) colonography has been recognized as an alternative for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening in average-risk individuals, but less information is available on its performance in individuals at increased risk of CRC. OBJECTIVE: To assess the accuracy of CT colonography in detecting advanced colorectal neoplasia in asymptomatic individuals at increased risk of CRC using unblinded colonoscopy as the reference standard. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a multicenter, cross-sectional study. Individuals at increased risk of CRC due to either family history of advanced neoplasia in first-degree relatives, personal history of colorectal adenomas, or positiv…
A novel multi-wavelength procedure for blood pressure estimation using opto-physiological sensor at peripheral arteries and capillaries
2018
© 2018 SPIE. In this study, the Carelight multi-wavelength opto-electronic patch sensor (OEPS) was adopted to assess the effectiveness of a new approach for estimating the systolic blood pressure (SBP) through the changes in the morphology of the OEPS signal. Specifically, the SBP was estimated by changing the pressure exerted on an inflatable cuff placed around the left upper arm. Pressure acquisitions were performed both with gold standard (i.e. electronic sphygmomanometer), and Carelight sensor (experimental procedure), on subjects from a multiethnic cohort (aged 28 ± 7). The OEPS sensor was applied together with a manual inflatable cuff, going slightly above the level of the SBP with in…
On attracting sets in artificial networks: cross activation
2018
Mathematical models of artificial networks can be formulated in terms of dynamical systems describing the behaviour of a network over time. The interrelation between nodes (elements) of a network is encoded in the regulatory matrix. We consider a system of ordinary differential equations that describes in particular also genomic regulatory networks (GRN) and contains a sigmoidal function. The results are presented on attractors of such systems for a particular case of cross activation. The regulatory matrix is then of particular form consisting of unit entries everywhere except the main diagonal. We show that such a system can have not more than three critical points. At least n–1 eigenvalu…
Autobiographical reading
2010
In my book, I have attempted the elaboration of a system for rereading 20th-century Hungarian autobiographies, by way of putting the emphasis on theoretical considerations. (From the “Death of the Author” to the Resurrection of the Author, Stereotypes in Autobiographical Reading) The major analytical aspects of the Autobiographical Reading focuses on the language based means of the representation of the Self. (Language and Subject, Staging the Self, Inter-Replacing Play of Image and Representation, Relationship between the Narrating and the Narrated Autobiographical Self, Memory and Identity) The choice of this subject matter is justified first of all by the fact that the conditions for the…
