Mesenteric Lymph Node Involvement in Advanced Ovarian Cancer Patients Undergoing Rectosigmoid Resection: Prognostic Role and Clinical Considerations

2014

Background: The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the incidence of mesenteric lymph node (MLN) involvement, and its prognostic role in advanced ovarian cancer (OC). Methods: OC patients undergoing rectosigmoid resection during primary debulking surgery or interval debulking surgery were recorded. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival were calculated from the date of diagnosis to the date of relapse/progression, death of disease, or the date of last follow-up. Results: MLNs were detected in 102/148 cases (68.9 %); the rate of MLN involvement was 47.0 %. The percentage of metastatic MLNs was higher in cases with >5 MLNs removed compared with cases with ≤5 MLNs …

Programmed colorectal cancer screening decreases incidence and mortality

2019

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer- related deaths in the world (1). Detecting and removing precancerous lesions or detecting tumors in early stages through endoscopy decreases CRC mortality (2). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that CRC screening based on guaiac fecal occult blood testing (gFOBT) and flexible sigmoidoscopy is effective in reducing incidence and mortality rates of CRC (3).

Histological and histochemical changes in the colon mucosa after ureterosigmoidostomy or colonic conduit.

1988

A study was made of 22 patients previously subjected to urinary diversion, 12 with ureterosigmoidostomy and 10 with colon conduit. The histological and histochemical examination of biopsies of intestinal mucosa near to and far from the ureteral orifices showed transformations with considerable inflammatory infiltration, variations in the composition of the acid mucins with a prevalence of sialomucins, lengthening and branching of the glandular crypts, and sometimes dysplasias of the epithelium. These structural modifications are typical of transitional mucosa. Transitional mucosa might reflect an aspecific reaction of the intestinal mucosa or alternatively it might signify a precancerous co…

Ultrasound in children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease

2014

The term Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is used to describe several idiopathic gastrointestinal disorders; among these diseases, the most commonly encountered in clinical practice are Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). CD and UC are different both in distribution of gastrointestinal tract involvement and depth of inflammation. 25% of patients reveals IBD during childhood or adolescence. [1] No consensus exists regarding the optimal techniques and imaging modalities when evaluating IBD, especially in the paediatric age. [2] The correct imaging choice often depends on clinical presentation of patients. The most common situations are: the initial diagnosis of suspected IBD; pa…

Cell Cycle in Potentially Dedifferentiating Cereal Mesophyll Protoplasts Cultured in vitro II. Behaviour of the Cytoskeleton

1993

Summary Following up on the recent finding that mesophyll protoplasts of wheat and oats were able to reenter the cell cycle when cultured in vitro , the behaviour of the cytoskeleton was studied. The aim was to elucidate whether changes in the cytoskeletal patterns correlate with the abnormal progression through the cycle observed previously. Protoplasts freshly isolated from mature mesophyll tissue (type B) exhibited very few, fragmented microtubules, whereas mesophyll protoplasts isolated from immature leaf tissue (type A) showed an abundant network fo microtubules. Type B protoplasts of wheat, which were able to reenter but recalcitrant to complete S-phase, failed to reestablish a microt…

The First Cell Division Cycle in Nicotiana Mesophyll Protoplasts Cultured in vitro II. Microtubules and the Plane of Division

1991

Summary Reorganization of the microtubular cytoskeleton prior to and during the first cell division cycle of Nicotiana mesophyll protoplasts was investigated using immunofluorescence microscopy. Bands of microtubules reminiscent of PPBs were found. However, their structure was comparatively diffuse. In addition, frequencies were low compared to those in meristem cells of organized tissues. Abnormalities during phragmoplast and cell plate formation were observed. The question is raised whether the formation of abnormal PPBs is related to strategic difficulties in co-ordinating the formation of a coherent plate of cytoplasm (phragmosome) traversing the vacuole to permit smooth bisecting of th…

The helminth community of Apodemus sylvaticus (Rodentia, Muridae) in the Sierra de Gredos (Spain)

2004

The Spanish mountain range of Gredos was included in the studies conducted on the Iberian peninsula to investigate helminth fauna of small mammals. The helminth community of the wood mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus (Rodentia, Muridae), was analysed. Qualitatively, 13 helminth species were detected: Plagiorchis sp. I and Plagiorchis sp. II (Trematoda); Taenia parva larvae, T. martis larvae, T. taeniaeformis larvae, Rodentolepis straminea and R. fraterna (Cestoda); and Trichuris muris, Heligmosomoides polygyrus, Syphacia stroma, S. frederici, Aspiculuris tetraptera and Rictularia proni (Nematoda). Quantitatively, the highest prevalence (65.0%) and the mean abundance (36.9%) of H. polygyrus stand o…
