Arsenite adsorption on goethite at elevated temperatures

2009

Abstract Experimental closed-system ΔT acid–base titrations between 10 °C and 75 °C were used to constrain a temperature-dependent 1-pK basic Stern model of the goethite surface complexation reactions. Experimental data for the temperature dependence of pHPZC determined by the one-term Van’t Hoff extrapolation yield a value for goethite surface protonation enthalpy of −49.6 kJ mol−1 in good agreement with literature data. Batch titration data between 10 °C and 75 °C with arsenite concentrations between 10 μM and 100 μM yield adsorption curves, which increases with pH, peak at a pH of 9, and decrease at higher pH values. The slope of this bend becomes steeper with increasing temperature. A 1…

Effect of pH on the mobility of the herbicide MCPA in a sand-goethite column: 1D and 2D reactive transport modeling

2018

Abstract Adsorption and transport of the herbicide 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) in a homogeneous sand-goethite system were investigated as a function of pH. Interaction of MCPA with the solid surface was geochemically modeled according to the charge distribution multisite complexation (CD-MUSIC) approach. Based on this calibration, retardation of MCPA transport in column experiments was significantly underestimated by conventional 1D simulations. As a new approach, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) was employed to analyze the flow field, using 18F− as a radiotracer. The observed heterogeneity was reproduced in 2D simulations assuming increased permeability and porosity at the…

Silicate adsorption by goethite at elevated temperatures

2009

Abstract Batch adsorption experiments with relatively low silica concentrations between 10 µM and 100 µM were conducted at three different ionic strength (0.01  − 0.1 M), and four different temperatures between 10 °C and 75 °C, yielding in a total of 550 experimental data points. The residual concentration of monosilicic acid is controlled by an adsorption equilibrium which is dependent on pH. The % Si adsorbed vs. − log[H + ] curves reveal an upward bend with a maximum at about a pH of 9. With acidification below pH 9 the residual Si concentration in the suspensions steadily increases, as well as in the increasingly alkaline pH range. The slope of the latter is becoming steeper with increa…

Speciation of Copper in Enriched Agricultural Lime

2011

Agricultural liming materials are used to lower soil acidity and to improve microbial functionality and plant growth. A brownish colored agricultural lime was found to contain up to 180 mg kg ―1 Cu, an amount well above any fertilizing materials code threshold. The dark color of the milled material was due to ample black and brown dendrites consisting of the tectomanganate mineral romanechite (ideally (Ba,H 2 O) 2 (Mn 4+ ,Mn 3+ ) 5 O 10 ) and a mixture of the two nanocrystalline Fe oxides ferrihydrite and goethite. A four-step sequential extraction analysis of the lime powder was not sufficient to argue whether the Cu load was contained in the carbonate matrix or in the oxide dendrites, or,…

Preparation and cytotoxic properties of goethite-based nanoparticles covered with decyldimethyl(dimethylaminoethoxy) silane methiodide

2010

The present work describes the synthesis, physico-chemical and biological properties of the first water-soluble goethite nanoparticles covered with biologically active components: oleic acid and cytotoxic decyldimethyl(dimethylaminoethoxy)silane methiodide. The structure of initial goethite nanoparticles synthesized was proved by XRD analysis and the rough estimation of nanoparticles core size gave the value of 8 nm. The size of colloidal water-soluble nanoparticles, determined by dynamic light scattering, was within 19–35 nm. Magnetic properties and cytotoxicity (against HT-1080 and MG-22A tumor cell lines) of the nanoparticles obtained were investigated. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons…

Voltammetric analysis of iron oxide pigments

2002

Eighteen earthy and four pure synthetic pigments containing alpha-Fe2O3 (hematite), alpha-FeOOH (goethite) and poorly crystalline Fe and Mn oxide species were analyzed by voltammetry of microparticles. Three natural samples were subjected to an interlaboratory test to evaluate the reproducibility of the voltammetric peak potentials and peak shapes. The results confirmed that linear-sweep voltammetry is able to distinguish between poorly crystalline, ferrihydrite-like oxides and well-crystalline hematite and goethite and to detect XRD-amorphous Mn(III,IV) oxides via the peak occurrence. Voltammetry is further able to distinguish between pigments containing well-crystalline goethite (accordin…

Mapping of corrosion products of highly altered archeological iron using voltammetry of microparticles

2013

The application of the voltammetry of microparticles to identify corrosion products on different localizations of highly altered archeological iron pieces is described. The use of graphite pencil methodology permits to mapping different corrosion products, namely, akaganeite, goethite, hematite, jarosite, magnetite, maghemite and siderite, in iron artifacts. Identification protocols are based on square wave voltammetric measurements performed at sample-modified paraffin-impregnated graphite electrodes immersed into aqueous HCl. This methodology is applied for mapping corrosion products on an Iberian Roman shield boss from the Torre la Sal archeological site (Oropesa, Spain) dated in the IVt…

Atmospheric Corrosion Investigation in Industrial, Marine and Rural Environments in South-East Brazil

2002

ASTM 283-C, AISI 304 and 316-L steel specimens (called coupons) were exposed in marine, industrial and rural area(s) for different periods ranging between 1–12 months, in four different season campaigns. The corrosion rate was determined by chemical loss measurements. Rust characterization was performed by XRD, SEM, optical, and Mossbauer spectroscopy (in transmission and backscattering geometry). Superparamagnetic maghemite and goethite were found as corrosion products. Magnetic goethite and feroxyhite decrease with time of exposure. Lepidochrosite is detected and its intensity increase with the atmospheric exposure time. The results obtained from XRD and Mossbauer are in good agreement.

Identification of Earth Pigments by Applying Hierarchical Cluster Analysis to Solid State Voltammetry. Application to Severely Damaged Frescoes

2007

Multivariate chemometric methods are applied for identifying earth pigments from square-wave voltammetric measurements performed at pigment-modified paraffin-impregnated graphite electrodes allowing for a separation between hematite-based earths, French ochres, Spanish ochres, siennas, umbers and green earths. This methodology is applied to the identification of the pigments in samples from the ceiling frescoes of Antonio Palomino (dated 1707) in the vaulted nave of the Sant Joan del Mercat church in Valencia (Spain). These frescoes suffered considerable damage by fire during the Spanish Civil War in 1936, resulting in severe chemical and chromatic alterations. Electrochemical data, support…

Abiotic versus biotic iron mineral transformation studied by a miniaturized backscattering Mössbauer spectrometer (MIMOS II), X-ray diffraction and R…

2017

Abstract Searching for biomarkers or signatures of microbial transformations of minerals is a critical aspect for determining how life evolved on Earth, and whether or not life may have existed in other planets, including Mars. In order to solve such questions, several missions to Mars have sought to determine the geochemistry and mineralogy on the Martian surface. This research includes the two miniaturized Mossbauer spectrometers (MIMOS II) on board the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity, which have detected a variety of iron minerals on Mars, including magnetite (Fe2+Fe3+2O4) and goethite (α-FeO(OH)). On Earth, both minerals can derive from microbiological activity (e.g. thro…
