Moderate ovarian stimulation does not increase the incidence of human embryo chromosomal abnormalities in in vitro fertilization cycles.
2012
A high chromosomal abnormalities rate has been observed in human embryos derived from in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. The real incidence in natural cycles has been poorly studied, so whether this frequency may be induced by external factors, such as use of gonadotropins for ovarian stimulation, remains unknown. We conducted a prospective cohort study in a University-affiliated private infertility clinic with a comparison between unstimulated and stimulated ovarian cycles in the same women. Preimplantation genetic screening by fluorescence in situ hybridization was performed in all viable d 3 embryos. The primary objective was to compare the incidence of embryo chromosomal abnormaliti…
The effect of cancer treatment on female fertility and strategies for preserving fertility.
2006
Aggressive chemotherapy and radiotherapy in young patients with cancer has greatly enhanced the life expectancy of these patients, but these treatments often cause infertility because of the massive destruction of the ovarian reserve resulting in premature ovarian failure (POF). This review focuses on the effect of cancer treatments on fertility and on the various surgical and assisted-reproduction innovations that are available to provide the patient with the option of future pregnancies. As the emerging discipline of fertility preservation is steadily attracting increasing interest, developments in the near future promise to be very exciting. However, in everyday routine work, better inte…
The predictive role of pelvic magnetic resonance in the follow up of spontaneous or induced puberty in turner syndrome
2018
Abstract Puberty is a critical age for patients with Turner syndrome (TS): infertility is reported to be linked to karyotype and spontaneous puberty and menarche occur in approximately 30% of patients, especially in mosaicism. However, it is not always predictable considering hormonal pattern and pelvic transabdominal ultrasound scan (US). The aim of the study is to compare the accuracy of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and US to evaluate uterine and gonads volume, to visualize the presence of follicles and to predict spontaneous puberty and menarche in girls with TS. In a retrospective study, we evaluated 19 TS patients (age: 9–16 years), who underwent transabdominal pelvic US and pelvic…
Does transvaginal color Doppler sonography differentiate between developing and involuting ectopic pregnancies?
1995
The objective of this study was to assess the addition of transvaginal color Doppler imaging to transvaginal ultrasonography and beta-human chorionic gonadotropin values to differentiate between developin and involuting ectopic pregnancies. Forty surgically confirmed ectopic pregnancies were classified into developing or involuting according to histopathologic findings. Results were compared retrospectively with the plasma beta-human chorionic gonadotropin values as well as the resistive index and pulsatility index obtained in corpora lutea and peritrophoblastic flow in serial examinations. Student's t-test was used for comparison of means. Logistic regression analysis was applied to predic…
Gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogue or dienogest plus estradiol valerate to prevent pain recurrence after laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis…
2015
Objectives To evaluate the efficacy of dienogest + estradiol valerate (E2V) and gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogue (GnRH-a) in reducing recurrence of pain in patients with chronic pelvic pain due to laparoscopically diagnosed and treated endometriosis. Design Multi-center, prospective, randomized study. Setting Three university departments of obstetrics and gynecology in Italy. Population Seventy-eight women who underwent laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis combined with chronic pelvic pain. Methods Post-operative administration of dienogest + E2V for 9 months (group 1) or GnRH-a monthly for 6 months (group 2). Main outcome measures A visual analogue scale was used to test intensit…
Interactions of the hormones leptin, ghrelin, adiponectin, resistin, and PYY3-36 with the reproductive system.
2006
Objective To summarize the effects of novel hormones (leptin, ghrelin, adiponectin, resistin, and PYY3-36) secreted from adipose tissue and the gastrointestinal tract that have been discovered to exert different effects on several reproductive functions, such as the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis, embryo development, implantation physiology, and clinically relevant conditions. Design A MEDLINE computer search was performed to identify relevant articles. Result(s) Leptin and ghrelin exert important roles on body weight regulation, eating behavior, and reproduction, acting on the central nervous system and target reproductive organs. As a marker of adequate nutritional stores, these horm…
Paracrine dialogue in implantation
2002
We know that the implantation process requires a functionally normal embryo at the blastocyst stage and a receptive endometrium, but also a communication link between them is needed. This paracrine dialogue between the embryo, endometrium and the corpus luteum are known to occur in ruminants and primates, more specifically endometrial-embryonic interactions have been reported in rodents and primates but not in humans. This process is a highly regulated mechanism and many molecules take part in this cross-talk. Here, we present updated information in humans on the embryonic regulation of endometrial epithelial molecules such as chemokines, adhesion and anti-adhesion molecules, and leptin dur…
Detection of a synthetic sex steroid in the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus): Evidence for a novel environmental androgen
2017
Endocrine-disrupting contaminants (EDC's) are well known to alter sexual differentiation among vertebrates via estrogenic effects during development, particularly in organisms characterized by temperature-dependent sex determination. However, substances producing androgenic effects typically lack potency when tested in laboratory settings and are virtually unstudied in field settings. Here, we assay levels of a synthetic androgen, 17a-methyltestosterone (MT), in a heavily male-biased population of American crocodiles in the Tempisque River Basin of Costa Rica based on the recent hypothesis that this chemical is an EDC in developing crocodilian embryos. The presence of MT was documented in a…
Simultaneous pituitary–gonadal recrudescence in two Corsican populations of male blue tits with asynchronous breeding dates
2006
Animal populations living in geographically variable environments respond to different selection pressures. The adaptive character of the responses to environmental information determines the degree of synchrony of the breeding period with local optimal conditions. An example is provided by two populations of Mediterranean blue tits (Parus caeruleus) in Corsica, breeding in different habitats, with a 1-month difference in the onset of egg laying. This difference in the onset of lay is supposed to be adaptive because, although chicks from both populations are raised mostly on caterpillars, the timing of the appearance of caterpillars is earlier for populations of tits associated with deciduo…
