Quasi Conjunction and Inclusion Relation in Probabilistic Default Reasoning

We study the quasi conjunction and the Goodman & Nguyen inclusion relation for conditional events, in the setting of probabilistic default reasoning under coherence. We deepen two recent results given in (Gilio and Sanfilippo, 2010): the first result concerns p-entailment from a family F of conditional events to the quasi conjunction C(S) associated with each nonempty subset S of F; the second result, among other aspects, analyzes the equivalence between p-entailment from F and p-entailment from C(S), where S is some nonempty subset of F. Probabilistic entailment in the setting of coherence: The role of quasi conjunction and inclusion relation

In this paper, by adopting a coherence-based probabilistic approach to default reasoning, we focus the study on the logical operation of quasi conjunction and the Goodman-Nguyen inclusion relation for conditional events. We recall that quasi conjunction is a basic notion for defining consistency of conditional knowledge bases. By deepening some results given in a previous paper we show that, given any finite family of conditional events F and any nonempty subset S of F, the family F p-entails the quasi conjunction C(S); then, given any conditional event E|H, we analyze the equivalence between p-entailment of E|H from F and p-entailment of E|H from C(S), where S is some nonempty subset of F.…
Quasi conjunction, quasi disjunction, t-norms and t-conorms: Probabilistic aspects

We make a probabilistic analysis related to some inference rules which play an important role in nonmonotonic reasoning. In a coherence-based setting, we study the extensions of a probability assessment defined on $n$ conditional events to their quasi conjunction, and by exploiting duality, to their quasi disjunction. The lower and upper bounds coincide with some well known t-norms and t-conorms: minimum, product, Lukasiewicz, and Hamacher t-norms and their dual t-conorms. The influence of the mean stress on fatigue life of 10HNAP steel under random loading

Abstract This paper contains the results of uniaxial random load fatigue tests with different mean values performed on 10HNAP steel specimens. The experimental fatigue life was compared with the life determined according to different methods of amplitude transformation of the cycles. Cycles were counted with the rain flow algorithm and damage was cumulated with the Palmgren–Miner hypothesis. It has been shown that in the case of “symmetric” stress histories with zero expected values, the mean values of selected cycles do not strongly influence the calculated fatigue life and transformation of the cycle amplitudes; hence, no mean stress correction for cycle mean values different from zero is…
Fatigue crack propagation from a cold-worked hole

Abstract The cold expansion process is widely used to enhance the fatigue life of structures with fastener holes. Various studies assert that the cold expansion improves the fatigue strength of fastener holes; however, the improvement of fatigue life is difficult to quantify. Therefore, the influence on fatigue life of cold-worked process was studied by numerical and experimental tests. Then, a parametric study on material hardening behavior and Bauschinger’s parameter was performed for several loading conditions in order to determine their effect on crack growth propagation. The results of the numerical tests have exhibited a good prediction of the fatigue life of the component.

To explain such a fact, the authors lay emphasis on the way the concept of literature was coined from romantic and structuralist elements in the French context.
