Steroid Biomarkers Revisited - Improved Source Identification of Faecal Remains in Archaeological Soil Material.
2017
Steroids are used as faecal markers in environmental and in archaeological studies, because they provide insights into ancient agricultural practices and the former presence of animals. Up to now, steroid analyses could only identify and distinguish between herbivore, pig, and human faecal matter and their residues in soils and sediments. We hypothesized that a finer differentiation between faeces of different livestock animals could be achieved when the analyses of several steroids is combined (Δ5-sterols, 5α-stanols, 5β-stanols, epi-5β-stanols, stanones, and bile acids). We therefore reviewed the existing literature on various faecal steroids from livestock and humans and analysed faeces …
Chenopodium album L. (Fat Hen): In Vitro Cell Culture, and Production of Secondary Metabolites (Phytosterols and Ecdysteroids)
1998
The name Chenopodium is derived from the Greek words chenos (goose) and podos (foot), because the leaves often resemble goose feet. This genus consists of ca. 120 species, widely distributed over the world, 45 of which have been described in India.
Social dominance correlates and family status in wintering dark-bellied brent geese Branta bernicla bernicla
2006
International audience; In many gregarious species, including ducks and geese, being dominant provides more benefits than costs, because dominants have better access to resources essential for survival or reproduction. In geese, being in better body condition during migration towards the breeding grounds positively influences reproductive success. However, underlying proximate mechanisms linking prebreeding body condition on the wintering grounds to breeding success remain poorly understood. We investigated social dominance correlates and family status, in three consecutive winters, in a free-ranging, migrating, dark-bellied brent goose population. Families with juveniles dominated pairs, a…
Pervasive declines in monkfish (Lophius americanus) size structure throughout the northwest Atlantic
2020
Abstract Shifts in size structure have been documented for many commercially exploited marine fish stocks, thought to be attributed to size-selective harvesting practices coupled with changing oceanic conditions. Northwest Atlantic monkfish (Lophius americanus) is a commercially valued species in the United States that is commonly caught as bycatch in Canadian scallop and groundfish fisheries. This uniquely positioned stock is bisected by the Canadian–American jurisdictional boundary, with considerable differences in exploitation and management across its range. The status of this species was assessed two decades ago (2000) in the Maritimes region of Canada and more recently (2016) in the U…
Goose, Duck and Garganey
2019
Duck, goose and garganey are waterfowls consumed in a lower proportion than chicken. These species are of great economic importance in Asia, Europe and USA. Among the three species, duck is the main bird produced for the meat system while goose is commercially produced by at lower proportion than duck. Differently, garganey is considered as game meat, which has been poorly studied in last decades. The productive system of duck and goose share similarities with which other such as physical structure, animal management, feeding strategies, management of environmental conditions, transport, and slaughter. However, these variables and related aspects of farming and meat processing can be manage…
This article studies the illustrations of the game of Filosofía cortesana (Courtly philosophy) accompanying the 1587 Madrid edition. The existence of these images was not heretofore known, although a 1588 Venice edition has recently been discovered with a representa…
Indole alkaloids from the coprophilous fungus Aphanoascus fulvescens
2019
Abstract The Ascomycete fungus Aphanoascus fulvescens isolated from goose dung was investigated for its secondary metabolites, yielding five new indole alkaloids okaramines V–Z (1–5) and eleven known derivatives (6–16). Their structures were determined by 1D, 2D NMR spectra and HRMS data. Compounds 6, 8, 11 and 12 showed significant to moderate cytotoxicity against the mouse lymphoma cell line L5178Y with IC50 values ranging from 4.0 to 14.7 μM. Preliminary structure-activity relationships are discussed.
Characterization of poultry egg-white avidins and their potential as a tool in pretargeting cancer treatment.
2003
Chicken avidin and bacterial streptavidin are proteins used in a wide variety of applications in the life sciences due to their strong affinity for biotin. A new and promising use for them is in medical pretargeting cancer treatments. However, their pharmacokinetics and immunological properties are not always optimal, thereby limiting their use in these applications. To search for potentially beneficial new candidates, we screened egg white from four different poultry species for avidin. Avidin proteins, isolated from the duck, goose, ostrich and turkey, showed a similar tetrameric structure, similar glycosylation and stability against both temperature and proteolytic activity of proteinase…
