A standard for public consultation on science communication: the CONCISE project experience

2022

Citizen consultations are public participation mechanisms designed to inform public policy and promote public dialogue. This article describes a deliberative consultation conducted within the CONCISE project framework. The aim was to gather qualitative knowledge about the means and channels through which European citizens acquire science-related knowledge, and how these influence their opinions and perceptions with respect to four socially relevant topics: vaccines, complementary and alternative medicine, genetically modified organisms, and climate change. In 2019, the CONCISE project carried out five citizen consultations in Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Italy and Portugal to explore the unders…

La mutualisation logistique à la lumière des pratiques dans le secteur de l'édition

2015

The pooling of resources can be used by companies to reduce costs or facilitate their access to a market when they are small. Among the resources that can be pooled are logistics resources. They can take the form of platforms, warehouses, information systems or even relate to means of transport. The pooling of logistical resources is often presented today as a means of reducing the environmental costs linked to transport. Or is that their only goal? Publishing uses this pooling a lot and this use predates the development of environmental concerns in corporate governance. It therefore seemed interesting to us to study how and why these mutualizations are used in the book supply chain. We try…

Big Data in Corporate Governance decision

2020

[EN] Progress in Big Data in recent years has grown exponentially, which has allowed the detection and processing of a large amount of data. Until recently, this fact was unattainable by the lack of mechanization of the corporate governance reports. This paper investigates the relationship between corporate governance decisions affect the indebtedness policies of 1,956 industrial companies listed in Europe and the USA over the period 2016–2018 (5,868 observations). To measure corporate governance decisions, we use detailed information on the expertise of audit committees, the proportion of independent directors, board structures and women's presence on corporate boards. Our findings, which …

Governance models of coopetition and innovation: the case of Spanish firms

2016

Although numerous studies show that cooperation relates strongly to obtaining benefits in business innovation, few researchers have considered the role of competition in this relationship. Nevertheless, it is expected that firms can boost their innovation if they cooperate with competitors and with intermediaries. The aim of this study was to observe whether coopeting firms achieve high degrees of innovation. To accomplish this aim, we used a sample of innovative firms from the region of Valencia (Spain). The chosen region has specific structural characteristics, which are discussed later. Although the sampled firms compete with one another, they also collaborate with each other and with in…

Authoritarian Neoliberalism : Its Ideological Antecedents and Policy Manifestations from Carl Schmitt’s Political Economy of Governance

2018

The regime of authoritarian neoliberalism is underway. In contemporary political economy of governance, this regime has been construed as a crisis response of the capitalist class to manage the conflict-ridden consequences of economic globalization; and, as an ideological project of a section of the ruling elites to justify the embedding of market-oriented development processes in a politically repressive government institution. To contribute to recent scholarship attempts at defining the character and tendencies of this emergent regime, the article traces one of its key ideological antecedents from Carl Schmitt’s earlier formulation for a “strong state, free economy”. It then presents a su…

Corporate Governance: Stakeholder Value Versus Shareholder Value

2001

Unsatisfied with the dominating shareholders point of view, that appears to be too limited to build a relevant theory of corporate governance, we propose an enlarged definition of the value which may be called, the stakeholder value. This definition and its associated measure are more suitable for the stakeholder approach to the firm and more relevant to understand the value creation and sharing mechanisms.

Abstract The concept of social licence to operate (SLO) is an increasingly popular tool for companies to manage their relations with the local communities. SLO is very seldom used in the nuclear sector, which has nevertheless applied similar approaches, under notions such as partnership and participatory governance. This article explores the specific challenges that the application of SLO faces in the nuclear waste management (NWM) sector, by applying an often-used SLO framework of Boutilier and Thomson to illustrative case studies concerning nuclear waste repository projects in Finland, France and Sweden. Among the specificities of this sector, the article focuses on the central roles of t…

Corporate Governance Effects on Firm Performance: a Literature Review

2021

The objective of this paper is to analyze the results of recent empirical research concerning the impact of corporate governance on firm performance and reflect potential research design problems which lead to inconsistent results. By means of a literature review including all articles of academic journal data bases with a journal quality rating of at least a C-rating in the VHB Journal Rating or above ‘3’ in the ABS Academic Journal Rating, respectively, the recent empirical research articles are analyzed regarding their main results. Two main groups of studies are identified: studies on company level to determine the impact of single corporate governance variables such as board size, chai…
